February is World Spay/Neuter Awareness Month. Raising global awareness of the benefits of spaying and neutering pets is important but let’s not forget our own animals right here in the neighborhood.
DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park is located in the heart of the West End neighborhood next to the historic DeTurk Round Barn. It’s a small, friendly dog park and there are “regulars” who visit every day. Many of the regulars take special care of the park by supplying bags, bowls and lending an extra hand to pick up waste. The informational bulletin board on the Prince Street side of the Park lists West End and Dog Park events. DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park also has it’s own facebook page. It’s a good place to check in about lost dogs, events and what’s happening at the park. Lisa Grant, S. R. Bags and gallon size + containers needed for the dog park. We can always use clean plastic bags at the dog park. Put them in the bag holders on the fence… or just hang them on the fence and one of the “regulars” will distribute them. We could also use a few more clean gallon size containers (bleach or vinegar containers are ideal). We are turning them into plastic bag holders. For more info- contact Lea Barron-Thomas

Love me Fix me Spay/Neuter Program– the new low-cost, mobile, targeted spay/neuter program arrived in the West End (at Western Farm Center) on January 9th . This amazing program offers low cost surgeries that cost the owners between $15-$30. 240 surgeries will be provided at no cost, based on income. The goal is to spay or neuter 2,400 dogs and cats in 2013. Pass this info on- Let’s stop all unwanted litters. February 10th, Sunday at 10 a.m.– West End Small Dog Hour– A slower, downsized environment for the smaller dog to play in. A great time for small dogs to meet with other small dogs to romp without concern. The West End Small Dog Hour is held the second Sunday of every month right before the W. E. Poodle Party. Silver Paws for Love- a new program that matches senior folks (55 and older) with senior dogs (6 yrs and older). Sonoma County Animal Care and Control has partnered with the Paws for Love Foundation to launch an innovative new adoption program. Paws for Love Gala (see below) proceeds help fund this program.
