The West End Kid’s Halloween Parade was a wonderful event. Friends and neighbors met to show off their outfits and to parade around the neighborhood and then everyone was off for trick and treating. Lots of West End houses were decked out for the enjoyment of little goblins.  Neighbor William Basie Daye III, a professional D. J., inspired us with music and a light show and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club wowed everyone with their spectacular human powered vehicles. Special thanks to Will Smith- who came up with the idea, Jacquie Smith for organizing the event and Gladis Calderson who took video in hand to record the event.  Good old fashioned neighborhood fun! If you missed it… here’s the VIDEO.

Thursday was an amazing day in the West End. The re-dedication to Maverick at DeTurk Round Barn Park, the Grand Opening of the DeTurk Round Barn and the Spring West End Meeting all in one day! Meanwhile, the weather went from overcast, to sprinkles, to heavy rain to sun- interesting but maddening to event planners. Here’s an overview of the day:

DeTurk Round Barn’s Dog Park was re-dedicated to fallen K-9 Maverick. Shirlee Zane, a well known dog lover and our So. Co. Supervisor, spoke and presented a resolution honoring the Maverick Dog Park and the West End Neighborhood Association.  As tradition dictates, “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes played as many neighbors, law enforcement officers and K9s took a moment to silently acknowledge the loss of a great K-9 and dog. Maverick’s Partner/Handler/Trainer Officer T. J. Van Bebber, accompanied by his family unveiled the plaque. Bob, Larry and Lou Bertolini of Western Farm Center handed out goodies for all the dogs.

The West End Neighborhood Association Spring Meeting was held, for the first time, in the DeTurk Round Barn. It was a great meeting. Along with our standard of each neighbor introducing themselves, the City of Santa Rosa City Manager Kathy Millard also made the acquaintance of our residents. We had updates about the progress of West End Charter School and The Great West End & Railroad Square Handcar Regatta. Afterwards, we all gathered for a group photo.

Cats & Birds- good separately but together not so much-  A bird bath is an essential feature for gardeners trying to attract birds. Birdbaths should be placed in an open area about 10 feet away from a sheltering tree or large shrub. Close enough for fast flight to safety but far enough away to be out of reach of a cat lying in wait. Speaking of cats, a small bell on Fluffy’s collar can help give birds a bit of notice.

Animal Lovers are always happy to find a Pet Friendly business, event or activity. Be sure to show your appreciation by becoming a loyal customer.

Western Farm Center, located in the heart of the West End, has always been a fun place to “go shopping” with your dog. Not only do they have a vast selection of pet related products, but the staff is very knowledgeable about any questions you might have. The best part, at least for your dog, will be the treat they will get at the check out counter. Western Farm Center

Railroad Square loves dogs too! – Dog lovers will be delighted when they walk by the Cast Away Yarn Shop . Shop owner Justine Malone has set up a comfy living room scene in her front window where Olive, her adorable Boston Terrier, lazes in front of the “fireplace”. FYI- You won’t see Olive every day- she works only part-time.

Pet Friendly Cafe- Kudos to Rendez Vous Bistro. In true French style, they welcome well-behaved canines to dine with their humans on their patio. Rendez Vous Bistro is located at 614 Fourth Street Santa Rosa. Let’s support our pet friendly businesses to show them we appreciate them. Check out their menu- click here.

Anyone need to add some new fur people to their home?-   St. Rose resident, Denise Hill reports: These teenage twins (to clarify, we’re talking about cats) showed up on our doorstep the week before Christmas very thin and cold. We’ve named them Tux and Edo. Not sure if they’re girls or boys. When they allow us to get more personal we’ll find out.  They picked the right foster home since they now have a wind and rain proof outdoor bedroom complete with Thermacare 12-hour heat packs when its super chilly at night. They also get 2 square meals a day. This annoys the heck out of our Calico, Fiona, who spends feeding time glaring at them from our office window – if looks could kill they would be in kitty heaven right now. Later, other cats arrived- the number is at 4 or so. If you’ve been looking for a Sylvester kitty or another purring friend- contact Denise.

Santa Paws at Western Farm- In spite of the rain and chilly weather, hundreds of dogs, plenty of cats, a parakeet, a maka bird, a rooster and a horse showed up to take a photo with Santa. Remember Rocky the Dog? Rocky was the poor Rottweiler-mix pup who suffered serious head injuries when he was beaten in March and left tied to a fence on Wilson Street. In spite of all the medical care, interest and attention- Rocky exhibited some behavior issues that made it difficult for him to find a home. (Go figure.)  Don Malone, Director of Operations at So. Humane Society, informs that Rocky was placed in a rescue in Woodland CA named Rotts of Friends. Don says he checked them out and found it to be a very nice place, which does rescues, training and placement. Rocky was transferred there in Oct. The hope is that eventually they will be able to place him if not he has a place to stay for the rest of his life. Thanks to the Sonoma Humane Society and Rotts of Friends for giving Rocky a chance.

The first West End Poodle Party was a smashing success. There were at least 25 poodles, mostly standard but also a few other sizes. We even had a few Doodles. Owners and their Poodles had a great time socializing. Western Farm Center’s Bob Bertolini, every dog’s favorite uncle and owner of two poodles, brought delicious dog ice cream. Linda, also from Western Farm, handed out treats to a very enthusiastic audience. We are hoping to have more Poodle Parties in the future. For more photos Facebook or West End Dog Park Photo Gallery

Kellie from Decker Street reports: One of our West End neighbors was in the Press Democrat today, well his Restaurant was. Luis on Decker Street owns Las Palmas Restaurant which was chosen as one of the best places for Fish Tacos in the County. I found a link:  http://www.biteclubeats.com/2010/08/fish-taco-quest.html and the article says:   Top Pick: Las Palmas  Fish tacos aren’t always on the menu, but when they are, jump. Blackened fish tacos here are all about the fish, and less about the batter. Loaded up with cabbage and a side of beans and rice, it’s a meal and a half. What keeps us coming back to Las Palmas are menu specials like these that go way beyond boring burritos and quesadillas. 415 Santa Rosa Ave., Santa Rosa, (707) 546-3091.
