Need some Bunny to love?  EASTER is fast approaching  (on April 8th) and after that something the folks at the House Rabbit Society call the “Easter Dump Season”. DON’T purchase a cute little bunny for photos, the holiday or simply the novelty. If you are truly interested in having a Rabbit as a pet- remember it is at least a 10 year commitment. Also, rabbits who live indoors are happier, healthier, more socialized and live a lot longer. You can always wait until after Easter and adopt one from a shelter. SCCRAP On February 26th it looked like there was another dog party at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park yesterday- there was a group of Pits and their owners. Very interesting- the group is called SCRRAP and they are a group of Sonoma County residents advocating for the Bully breeds. They go for monthly walks to different cities- They had their walk yesterday in downtown Santa Rosa starting off at the DeTurk Round Barn. Very cool group- they promote all the right things- responsible ownership, speaking out against Backyard Breeders, saving neglected and abused pits, and spay and neuter of non-show and non working companion dogs.

The West End is a wonderful place for dog lovers as there are nearby creeks paths, a beautiful dog park… and of course, our beloved Western Farm Center. Cats are not being ignored either… there is a West End Cat Colony that has been tended by West Ender Charly Thomas. Here’s the latest W. E. Pet Friendly news:

DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park Update: As many of you know, the dog park has been plagued with irrigation issues that have led to a muddy mess – even though it hasn’t rained. There were failed sprinklers, a leaky valve and the Park area (not the dog park) was overwatered- creating runoff into the dog park. This, of course, created a huge unsanitary and unsightly mess. Lisa Grant, Santa Rosa Rec & Parks Superintendent , has assured us that these issues have been addressed. The park is only supposed to be watered one minute a week to keep the irrigation system working- but not more than that. In the meantime, if you notice any dog park issues relating to maintenance- such as broken gates or irrigation issues- Please contact Lisa Grant directly. (707) 543-3774 lgrant@srcity.org. These issues will not be addressed unless Lisa is made aware of them.

Irrigation problems are hopefully resolved.

West End Cat Colony Update: Cats are all doing well. The colony has stabilized to around 13. All cats have been neutered and given shots…. Thanks to the efforts of Charly and Forgotten Felines. If you would like to donate food, please leave a bag of food on Charly’s doorstep at  124 W. 6th. Diamond Brand cat food is a reasonably priced that is available at Western Farm Center. The West End Neighborhood Association donates a bag of food every month… but they do eat more than that. Thanks to Charly for managing this situation

The birds are singing, the sun is shining… Is it winter time? Western Farm is in the news, SMART has announced that they will be able to extend the line to the Guerneville Road Station and a house of despair gets hope.

Neighbors:

Thank Goodness!  This once glorious historic building has had a very sad history of neglect and abuse. West Enders Betsy Hall and Gene Wright have purchased the house on the corner of 7th and Davis and will slowly revive the property. They plan to make it a property that will make the West End proud.  It’s a big project but it will make such a difference to this neighborhood. Thank you!

Luther Burbank Parade Entry: A West End Neighborhood entry in the parade this year?  Deborah Crippen has a few ideas… any one else interested in getting involved? The parade is on May 19th and the theme is Rockin’ Round the Roses.
