By now, many of you have noticed the steel beams sticking out of the windows of the DeTurk Round Barn, this is in preparation of the barn being lifted. It will be an exciting step of the project and may happen on Friday. The sod will finally be placed in the dog park and work will continue on the barn while the dog park completes its “grow in”. Tentative Dog Park opening is July 15, 2010- but everything is subject to change due to varied circumstances.

Project Update- In progress or planned- Dog Park: a) Tree and sod placement, b) Painting of fence c) Irrigation testing d) Benches and Final concrete work. Round Barn:  a) Shoring and cribbing for barn lift b) Barn lift c) Soil Removal d) Prep for concrete slab & infrastructure.  Off-Site Improvements: a) Start work on sidewalk etc. at Donahue/W. 8th.

Crime Alert-Bike stolen: Wednesday night (May 19th) one of our nice road bikes — a brown and white Jamis Aurora — was taken from behind our house at 120 9th St. Also happened at around 2AM. I called the police and they drove around the neighborhood a few minutes later with no luck.  Russ Scarola

West End Events & Happenings:

West End Summer Bocce- Every Friday at 6 p.m. at DeMeo Park.  Join your friends and neighbors at beautiful DeMeo Park.  Bring food and drinks to share.  The West End Neighborhood Association has secured a permit for alcohol and a lavatory for Friday night Bocce season. (Thanks to everyone who paid their dues!) This is an all age, dog friendly event. To keep the event enjoyable and comfortable for all- please remember to observe Park rules: No glass, dogs on leashes.  Wear layers for chilly nights.

May 28th, Friday night is the premier of Rent at the 6th Street Playhouse. Enjoy the wonderful amenity of live performances right in the neighborhood. For info Click here!

May 30th, Sunday St. Peterbilt – Sonoma County’s finest double clutchin’, scale jumpin’, mile makin’, tailgaitin’, possum squashin’, cop dodgin’, pinballin’, jackknifen’, gear bustin’ sort of a band will play at Russian River Brewing Co. May 16th, Sunday 3 p.m.- Pug Play Day at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park. Watch masses of playful pugs cavorting around. Other friendly dogs and breeds are invited to attend. The New Horizons Band Spring Concert- a concert band composed solely of musicians age 50 or older, playing woodwinds, brass, and percussion instruments gave their Spring Concert on May 7th. West End musician Joan Woodull plays tenor sax. See them in action- Click here! Very impressive!

Wednesday April 28th at 8 p.m.- Songwriter Showcase: Rob Heath, Ken Risling ( West End artist) and Mike Ehlers. An evening of great acoustic, original music from seasoned songcrafters. The “songwriters in the round” format will keep all three artists on the stage in rotation, trading songs and stories.  Ken Risling’s songs, ranging in genre from folk, country, 50’s blues, swing to modern rock,  have won numerous awards. With a warm manner and inviting voice, he is perhaps best known for delivering heartfelt tales. Location: Hopmonk Tavern 230 Petaluma Ave, Sebastopol.

Songwriters in the Round

Friday April 30th at 4:30 p.m.- Chops Teen Club Variety Showcase. The evening will showcase Chop’s teen member’s accomplishments in music, dance, fashion, art, martial arts and more. Appetizers will be served by the Chop’s Teen Catering Crew. Performances will take place from 5:00- 6:16 p.m. Come for the entertainment and experience the Chop’s Teen Club mission in action. Saturday May 1st 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.-  West End Neighborhood Spring Yard Sale A neighborhood wide yard sale. Sell at your own house or coop with a neighbor. (Rain Date is May 8th). $5 donation if you would like to participate- this covers costs of ads, signs that will be put up (and taken down) on the day of sale. Sunday May 2nd Noon to 6 p.m. The Second Annual Mostly Python. The Toad will be closing 5th Street down and have bands and brilliant actors performing brilliant sketches. A day to remember, special menus and vast quantities of beer. Toad in the hole.
