August 19^th, Friday at 8:00pm – August 28th at 2:00pm- Great War Chronicle An elderly woman tells her grandchildren of her early years with their grandfather, when the demands of war sadly separated them in a rock opera production. 6th Street Playhouse presents a rare opportunity to see a professionally produced workshop production of the new musical “Great War Chronicle” written by a noted Bay Area composer, featuring a romantic story set against a historical backdrop. August 20^th- Saturday. Redwood Empire Live Steamers Interactive Museum-Come ride this Saturday! Trains will soon be a reality in Santa Rosa. Here’s an opportunity to teach you kids about trains. Only a few more runs left before the trains are put up for the winter. This is a great opportunity to see musical group, “Juan Boulder”- featuring the West End’s own Bob Murnane (Murnane Floors on W. 6th Street is a wonderful West End sponsor!). This promises to be a “foot stomping” good time- Juan Boulder will be alternating sets with a Clogging group. They will play on the Main Stage. September 2nd, Friday- Avery Risling-Sholl & Ken Risling- West Enders Avery Risling-Sholl, vocalist and fiddler extraordinaire, will be joined Ken Risling once again in the hallowed halls of Aroma Roasters.
Those who follow him know Avery has been studying traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He is back stateside for a brief stay, and wants to play in his home neighborhood. Songwriter Ken Risling (“Dad”) leaps with joy at another chance to team up with his son for an evening of melody, harmony, and singing strings. Other musical friends may show up as well. So much to do- and all of it close by! It’s the peak of Summer- enjoy the weather and all the delightful events offered in Downtown. As always- you can join your friends and neighbors EVERY Friday at DeMeo Park for West End Bocce and you can “Wine Down” every Thursday at D’Argenzio Winery.

July 27th- August 14th- Sonoma County Fair. Good Ol’ fashioned fun. This year is the 75th anniversary- so opening day has a special procession starting at Wednesday Night Market and ending at the fair. Participants will receive free admission. There’s also free red, white and blue hats to create a living flag out of fairgoers. Fireworks too! Great local music choices: Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs, The Fondettes, Mad Maggies, Shannon Rider, The Don Giovannis and more. The weather is finally warming up… and as always there is a variety of events and happenings to choose from. West Enders can enjoy Bocce at DeMeo Park every Friday night. We also are usually within walking or biking distance to the best events in Santa Rosa. Take advantage of having the Rialto Cinema right in the neighborhood- the films are unique and flavorful.

June 21^st ,Tuesday- Making the Boys “The Boys in the Band” the first-ever gay play and subsequent Hollywood movie to successfully reach a mainstream audience changed everything. Making the Boys explores the enduring legacy and controversy that endures to this day “The Boys in the Band”. Tickets on sale now at rialtocinemas.com. June 22, Wednesday Help send Snoopy as our Goodwill Ambassador. This will be the first Snoopy ever on the Korean Island, Jejudo, Santa Rosa’s sister city. For 10 years, we have exchanged students and performers between our two cities. Jejudo has sent 3 statues over the years and this will be our first. A 30 inch bronzed Snoopy will be placed on a 36 inch pedestal that will be made in Jejudo and placed on a street named “Santa Rosa”. Help send the Snoopy Monument and taste some wine… all for $20. June 25th, Saturday- D’Argenzio winery and Time Traveler Tours Special Event- D’Argenzio Winery and Time Traveler Tours are teaming up to give a short walking tour of Railroad Square that will show guests where the Santa Rosa wine industry began. The tour will highlight old winery sites and give a history of early wine making in Santa Rosa. June 28^th , Tuesday- Something Ventured 5 p.m. 7:30 p.m. A documentary about Silicon Valley’s first venture capitalists and the companies they helped bring to life. The film also includes some of the finest entrepreneurs sharing how they worked with these venture capitalists to grow world-class companies like Intel, Apple, Cisco, Atari, Genentech, Tandem and others. Ahhh… good times are just ahead. Bocce season is opening Friday Night and there’s a summer full of fun events ahead.

Friday Night, May 20th- West End Summer Bocce begins. It’s finally time to spend wonderful nights at DeMeo Park! Bocce is a most incredible social event- and lucky for us it is EVERY Friday night! Bring a dish to share. The West End Neighborhood Association has procured a use permit that allows us to to drink a little wine (in the true Italian style) while we play bocce. June 12th, Sunday- 3rd Annual Mostly Python. Silly people take to the streets to be silly…..Live Monty Python skits from the “TOAD PLAYAS”,live bands,food,beers in the street.holy grails,fun ,frivolity and good times in the street outside the Toad.

June 10th- 12th- Harmony Festival. Maxfield Arts and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club (FBUC) present an exciting new attraction for Harmony Festival 2011 titled The Steampunk Garage, including Santa Rosa-based builders also known as Whiskeydrunk Cycles, Todd Barricklow, Krank-Boom-Clank and The Feed Barn, all of whom are intimately entwined with the North Bay’s popular annual Hand-car Regatta. Ananta De Tally plays on June 12th.

Crime Report- A Pierson Street neighbor reports: On the night of April 16th, a VW van parked on the corner of 3rd and Pierson was broken into. The motive is unclear, but it appears they were trying to remove the steering column. The incident was reported to the Santa Rosa police, and a report was filed.

Tim Sarter: I’ve opened a new play- Stand By Your Man the story of Tammy Wynette with Heritage Music Theater. It’s running from last weekend through April 17th at the Cinnabar in Petaluma. It has the same basic band as Lost Highway – Me, Jim Peterson, Dave Zirbel and Chris Rovetti. What’s more both Chiara and Fiona (daughters) are in it with me! The entire run sold out in one day, but there a still some tix available for the extended, closing weekend of April 15th. Read Show Review Also from HMT- We are also remounting Woody Guthrie’s American Songs for two nights (after a sold out run at Cinnabar) at what used to be the Rep theater (now HMTs new home) in Sebastapol on April 30th and May 1st. February 13th, Sunday- West End Poodle Party. The park will be packed with a herd of Poodles! Great fun. Place: DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park Time: 11 a.m. See West End Poodle Party on facebook

February 20th, Sunday- Pug Play Day. Pugs like to party too. In fact, they had so much fun at their January party- that they held a second January party. See a posse of Pugs at the park. Place: DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park Time: 3 p.m.

New West End Puppies- Congrats to Joan. She has two new Poodle babies- brother & sister as of yet, un-named. Aren’t they cute?

Western Farm Center, located in the heart of the West End, has always been a fun place to “go shopping” with your dog. Not only do they have a vast selection of pet related products, but the staff is very knowledgeable about any questions you might have. Railroad Square loves dogs too! – Dog lovers will be delighted when they walk by the Cast Away Yarn Shop . Shop owner Justine Malone has set up a comfy living room scene in her front window where Olive, her adorable Boston Terrier, lazes in front of the “fireplace”. FYI- You won’t see Olive every day- she works only part-time.

Pet Friendly Cafe- Kudos to Rendez Vous Bistro. In true French style, they welcome well-behaved canines to dine with their humans on their patio. Anyone need to add some new fur people to their home?- St. Rose resident, Denise Hill reports: These teenage twins (to clarify, we’re talking about cats) showed up on our doorstep the week before Christmas very thin and cold. We’ve named them Tux and Edo. Not sure if they’re girls or boys. When they allow us to get more personal we’ll find out. They picked the right foster home since they now have a wind and rain proof outdoor bedroom complete with Thermacare 12-hour heat packs when its super chilly at night. They also get 2 square meals a day. This annoys the heck out of our Calico, Fiona, who spends feeding time glaring at them from our office window – if looks could kill they would be in kitty heaven right now. Later, other cats arrived- the number is at 4 or so. If you’ve been looking for a Sylvester kitty or another purring friend- contact Denise.
