The contractor will be utilizing the SMART property at Railroad Square as a construction material storage and construction staging area. Yoga Every Monday & Friday- Join Tara Garland RYT of Wild Orchid Yoga. All levels & all ages welcome, beginners through seasoned yogis & yoginis! Tara Garland is a 200-hour registered yoga teacher and Relax and Renew restorative yoga-trained. Classes are one hour and fifteen minutes of various asana (pose) sequences designed to provide a well-balanced practice. NOTE! Put it on your calendar. The West End Neighborhood Association Fall Meeting will be November 17th, Thursday at 7 p.m. at the DeTurk Round Barn. It’s a good time to see neighbors before rain, cold and holidays keep us busy and indoors. News:

9th Street Community Mural: The finishing detail of the 9^th Street Community Mural is scheduled to be completed on Thursday, November 10^th. The “St. Rose Neighborhood” and “West End Neighborhood” will greet those who travel through the underpass. The Mural Committee members: Denise Hill from St. Rose Neighborhood & Sher Ennis and Lea Barron-Thomas from West End Neighborhood started the project in the Summer of 2009. Their goal was to take a dark, uninviting space and make it friendlier and easy to maintain. The Mural was funded by a City of Santa Rosa CAB grant. Mission complete!

A place to walk

Chop’s Teen Club members are working on a food drive. SAY (Social Advocates for Youth) has a Teen food pantry that is pretty bare. The teens decided to help them and a food drive was the first thing on the list. The Chop’s members will be dropping off boxes to stores in selected Railroad Square dropping bags off at houses in the neighborhood to collect items that people can spare or don’t use. Just leave this bag with any non-perishable food items you can spare in a visible place near your front door. Chops members will come by next Thursday 11/10 between 4pm and 6pm to collect the bags. Only non-perishable items will be collected.

DeMeo Park Clean up: The Interact Club at Chops and S. R. Rotary teamed up on Saturday to revive, refresh and clean up DeMeo Park. Check it out… it looks fabulous.

New Pedestrian trail: The City of S. R. has been constructing a new 10 foot wide pedestrian path from No. Dutton Ave to the S. R. Creek Tail. It is estimated that the new ramp will open by November 11th.

Thanksgiving without cooking or dishes or traveling? It is possible if you have Thanksgiving at Starks. The Thanksgiving Menu (Roast Willie Bird Turkey, Chef Mark’s Andouille Sausage & Wild Mushroom Stuffing, Traditional Giblet Gravy & Pomegranate-Cranberry Relish) will be served from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Most regular menu items will be available. North Bay Hootenanny every Wednesday at the Last Day Saloon. Come see traveling acts, up-and-comers, and local favorites! These shows are free and all ages, but try to bring some cash to donate to the artists- thanks! . November 12^th, Saturday- The Assistance League “New to You” Shop invites you to a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the Artstart’s murals on their building. Five art panels display models wearing vintage clothing from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. ArtStart artist is Chiara Sarter (That’s Tim Sarter and Chelsea Jacobsen’s daughter.) Nov. 15th, Tuesday A Christmas Story Preview night will benefit the Railroad Square Association for beautification and promotion. September 2nd, Friday- Avery Risling-Sholl & Ken Risling- West Enders Avery Risling-Sholl, vocalist and fiddler extraordinaire, will be joined Ken Risling once again in the hallowed halls of Aroma Roasters.
Those who follow him know Avery has been studying traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He is back stateside for a brief stay, and wants to play in his home neighborhood. Songwriter Ken Risling (“Dad”) leaps with joy at another chance to team up with his son for an evening of melody, harmony, and singing strings. Other musical friends may show up as well. July 27th- August 14th- Sonoma County Fair. Good Ol’ fashioned fun. This year is the 75th anniversary- so opening day has a special procession starting at Wednesday Night Market and ending at the fair. Participants will receive free admission. There’s also free red, white and blue hats to create a living flag out of fairgoers. Fireworks too! Big Dogs, Tours and Documentaries

The weather is finally warming up… and as always there is a variety of events and happenings to choose from. West Enders can enjoy Bocce at DeMeo Park every Friday night. We also are usually within walking or biking distance to the best events in Santa Rosa. Take advantage of having the Rialto Cinema right in the neighborhood- the films are unique and flavorful.

June 21^st ,Tuesday- Making the Boys “The Boys in the Band” the first-ever gay play and subsequent Hollywood movie to successfully reach a mainstream audience changed everything. Making the Boys explores the enduring legacy and controversy that endures to this day “The Boys in the Band”. Tickets on sale now at rialtocinemas.com. June 22, Wednesday Help send Snoopy as our Goodwill Ambassador. This will be the first Snoopy ever on the Korean Island, Jejudo, Santa Rosa’s sister city. For 10 years, we have exchanged students and performers between our two cities. Jejudo has sent 3 statues over the years and this will be our first. A 30 inch bronzed Snoopy will be placed on a 36 inch pedestal that will be made in Jejudo and placed on a street named “Santa Rosa”. Help send the Snoopy Monument and taste some wine… all for $20. June 25th, Saturday- D’Argenzio winery and Time Traveler Tours Special Event- D’Argenzio Winery and Time Traveler Tours are teaming up to give a short walking tour of Railroad Square that will show guests where the Santa Rosa wine industry began. The tour will highlight old winery sites and give a history of early wine making in Santa Rosa. Wine and appetizers will served at D’Argenzio Winery after the tour. $20 Tickets Location: Tour will meet in Railroad Square by S. R. Visitor’s Center. Time: 3- 5 p.m.

June 28^th , Tuesday- Something Ventured 5 p.m. 7:30 p.m. A documentary about Silicon Valley’s first venture capitalists and the companies they helped bring to life. The film also includes some of the finest entrepreneurs sharing how they worked with these venture capitalists to grow world-class companies like Intel, Apple, Cisco, Atari, Genentech, Tandem and others. Emmy-Award-winning filmmakers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine will be joining us for Q&A following each showing of Something Ventured. Tickets on sale now at rialtocinemas.com. Tickets may also be purchased at our box office at the Sixth Street Playhouse on the day of each showing. Adults are $10 and Seniors (60 and up) are $8.

June 29th, Wednesday- MISS KITTY AND HER BIG DOGS will play at the Wednesday night market. Miss Kitty & the Big Dogs featuring West End musician Tim Sarter on bass. The other excellent band members are Shannon Rider, Paul Urguhart, Dennis Sherman, Mark Marelli, Brandon Hunt & Justin Enright. The Hubbub Club will hold a musical parade. Location: Downtown Santa Rosa Time: 5- 8:30 p.m.

Ahhh… good times are just ahead. Bocce season is opening Friday Night and there’s a summer full of fun events ahead.

Friday Night, May 20th- West End Summer Bocce begins. It’s finally time to spend wonderful nights at DeMeo Park! Bocce is a most incredible social event- and lucky for us it is EVERY Friday night! Bring a dish to share. The West End Neighborhood Association has procured a use permit that allows us to to drink a little wine (in the true Italian style) while we play bocce. The permit is only for Friday Night Bocce and folks participating in the event. This is a family and dog friendly event. Location: DeMeo Park Time: 6:30 p.m. See Bocce 2010 Photo Gallery

Other upcoming events to put on your calendar. These are the best Summer offerings, many feature West End Artists and they are all within walking or biking distance:

July 16th, Saturday- West End Neighborhood Annual BBQ and Bicycle Parade. Decorate your favorite human powered contraption and ride in the parade! (Remember- 18 years and younger must wear bike helmets.) BBQ to follow.

June 12th, Sunday- 3rd Annual Mostly Python. Silly people take to the streets to be silly…..Live Monty Python skits from the “TOAD PLAYAS”,live bands,food,beers in the street.holy grails,fun ,frivolity and good times in the street outside the Toad.

June 10th- 12th- Harmony Festival. Maxfield Arts and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club (FBUC) present an exciting new attraction for Harmony Festival 2011 titled The Steampunk Garage, including Santa Rosa-based builders also known as Whiskeydrunk Cycles, Todd Barricklow, Krank-Boom-Clank and The Feed Barn, all of whom are intimately entwined with the North Bay’s popular annual Hand-car Regatta. Ananta De Tally plays on June 12th.

July 10th- August 14th -Live at Julliard. Every Sunday evening- enjoy live music in a beautiful setting. Most important dates (featuring West End artists!) July 10th- Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs, August 14th- Quarter Mile Combo. Two awesome bands you will not want to miss!

September 25th, Sunday- The Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta. Not to miss… and don’t forget to buy your tickets now. Handcar Regatta

Have a great Easter weekend!

Crime Report- A Pierson Street neighbor reports: On the night of April 16th, a VW van parked on the corner of 3rd and Pierson was broken into. The motive is unclear, but it appears they were trying to remove the steering column. The incident was reported to the Santa Rosa police, and a report was filed.
