We’re ready for a summer season of events and activities, now we just need the weather to cooperate. The West End plays Bocce at DeMeo Park every Friday night at 6:30 p.m.  West End Summer Movie nights start this Friday ( “weather permitting”. Let’s cross our fingers!) There’s lots of other things to do too… take a gander and pick  your favorites.

June 4th- First Saturday Clean up Help take care of restored Santa Rosa Creek flowing through the heart of downtown. Clean up and then pizza for lunch afterward. Please bring utensils so we may keep our trash impact low. Contribution to lunch, desserts, fruit and appetizers are always welcome. June 8th, Wednesday- Rialto Film Festival- “Conviction” Betty Anne Waters, a Massachusetts wife and mother of two, dedicates her life to overturning the murder conviction of her older brother Kenny. It’s all about creativity, innovation and talent in the West End. There are many, many opportunities to explore your own talent or enjoy the talent of another West Ender. Don’t forget- we are looking for talented kids for the Kid’s Talent Show on Sunday, May 22nd.

May 21 & 22, Saturday & Sunday-The Maker Faire is one of the most creative, unrestrained events celebrating arts, crafts, science and engineering. All the big Regatta vehicles including West End favorites the Hennepin Crawler and Murray the the fish and the entire Fun Bike Unicorn Club (all those wickedly crazy bike folks) will be attending.  As the World’s Largest DIY Festival, this two-day family friendly Faire has something for everyone – a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker mindset. Never has learning been so much fun or transplanted into a carnival-like atmosphere where fans of all ages explore several exposition and workshop pavilions, an outdoor midway, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and DIY competitions. May 22nd, Sunday- West End Children’s Talent Show. We have a few local kiddos (and need more) that want to show off their talents. Allen and Lea have graciously offered to host the kid’s talent show on Sunday, May 22 about 3pm. It will be a small “low key” talent show. Remember, low key and fun is the idea. Kids can sing, play the kazoo, lip sync, recite a poem, perform magic tricks, tell jokes, act in a skit with other kids, juggle or display tricks they’ve taught the dog.

May 27th, Friday. An Evening with Conspiracy-A-Go-G0, Sharky Coast & ANANTA. Local music in an intimate setting. This is your chance to see the West End’s own amazing electric violinist and hula-hooper, Ananta! Free. Location: My Friend Joe’s Coffee Shop 1810 Mendocino Ave. Time: 7 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.


School of Drama – The Youth Summer Musical Theater Workshop. This Summer workshop will culminate in a four performance run of Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Students will receive training in acting, dance and singing in a nurturing and challenging atmosphere. Workshop behinds June 13th and last performance is on July 17th. September 4th, Saturday 10 a.m. – First Saturday Clean up- Meet at Olive Park. Come join us as we learn about and clean the Creek. Get to know your neighbors, and people from other neighborhoods. The Creek connects us all, so we all need to take care of it. Afterwards join us for lunch. A main dish, salad and drinks will be provided. SMART Santa Rosa Railroad Square Station Site- West End residents and West End Neighborhood Association Board members, Carol Dean & Allen Thomas urge the SMART board to open any meetings, discussions or decision to the public. Street Sweeper is scheduled to come the first Friday, usually early morning, of every month.  Move your cars off the curb to allow sweepers to remove all debris.

August 6th – August 29th      6th Street Playhouse introduces “Solofest of the West” New solo series featuring solo playwrights with powerful stories about religion, health and weight.   David Templeton in Wretch Like Me Fridays at 8:00 p.m. & Sundays at 2:00 p.m.  A Totally Righteous One-Sinner-Show. The outrageous true story of a former teenage fundamentalist, and how he was saved from being “saved”.  Matthew Kerns in Chicken Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. This is one man’s story of life, liberty and the pursuit of healthiness in the shadow of HIV. Can peanut butter, show tunes, and a chain-smoking mother be the answer? Sarah Abbey in the Weight Game Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. Told through a series of vignettes, “The Weight Game” examines society’s obsessions with weight, self-esteem, and the conundrum that is peanut butter. 6th St. Playhouse

DeTurk Round Barn Project Update: At this point, the Dog Park is scheduled for Occupancy on 7-16-10. The landscape contractor has continued the sod grow-in and the General contractor will finalize items with the dog park such as the fence painting and dog water source. Highlights for the next few weeks include: Dog Park 1) Painting of fence 2) Verifying sod grow-in 3) Dog Park Move-In  4) Existing Dog Park Change to contractor Round Barn 1) 3rd concrete pour 2) Setting Building Down 3) Continued wood framing 4) Roof Demolition 5) New Roof  Offsite Improvements 1) Start work on sidewalk etc. at Donahue & W. 8th. This is now scheduled for 7-19-10.

The Don Giovannis is a six piece band consisting of two vocalists and 4 musicians that play a repertoire of classic Italian songs, sung in Italian and arranged in a style that combines traditional and modern elements. Most of the songs come from the Italian style known as Canzone Napolitana (Neapolitan Songs). What fun!

Then stoll on back to DeMeo Park for Bocce and the West End Movie night.
Street Sweeper is scheduled the First Friday of the Month. If you move your cars off the curb by early morning- you will allow the sweeper to do a thorough job. NOTE: The street sweeper occasionally shows up another day- just the way it works these days.

It’s about time! – A vintage style 2 faced street clock will be installed at the NE corner of 4th & Wilson on Friday, June 25th.  Historic Railroad Square Merchants have had this plan in the works for the last 10 years. It does take time! A granite plaque will be installed at the base of the street clock, honoring the major donors: Montague Family, California Preservation Foundation, Tyrone Development and Historic Railroad Square Association. RRSQ plans to dedicate the clock at the Railroad Square Summer Nights event on August 6th.

Peanuts on Parade: Look Out, It’s Lucy. Thirty Lucy statues have been painted by local artist and are now displayed in various locations in Santa Rosa. There are two Lucy’s outside of the S. R. Convention & Visitors Bureau ( The Depot Building in Railroad Square). The “I Love Santa Rosa This Much” Lucy will be raffled off. There is also a “Where’s Woodstock” game that involves a Woodstock decal and number. For more info, a map of the Lucy statues, to purchase raffle tickets or a Woodstock game sheet- Visit the nice folks at the S. R. Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
