News tidbits from the West End and Railroad Square

The West End Neighborhood was recognized by the City of Santa Rosa for participating in their Park Clean Up and Improvement Program. The West End has adopted the DeMeo Bocce courts. Every spring, neighbors organize a clean up of the courts and park. The courts are tended during the bocce season. West End Neighbors also were instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Vintage Rose Garden and Dog Park at DeTurk Round Barn Park. Great job!

Do you have roses or other blooms to share? From West End Neighbor, Andre’ Siedentopf: We are building a float for the Rose Parade in a garage on Madison St. It’s a small float with a 1.5″ scale train (Engine and Caboose) on it for the train club we belong too. Check out website: http://redwoodempirels.org/ We are in need of some flowers for it and would prefer to use fresh cut instead of fake or silk. We don’t need a ton of flowers but it would be nice to have a variety especially roses.  I know there a lot of folks in the neighborhood with lots of blooming or about to bloom flowers as you last article states. Could you put the word out and let’s see if anyones willing to donate some of their flowers to us? They can call me or email me either way. My phone number is 972-3733 or email at redwoodempirels@gmail.com We would need the flowers Friday (May 20th) night before the parade, the parade is Saturday May 21st.  Here’s some pictures of the float up to this point: LINK

We’ll be working on the float this Saturday and Sunday afternoon if you want to pop over and take a look.  Thanks so much if you can do this!!

All we need is roses and blooms!

All we need is roses and blooms!

It was a stormy night. For those of you who don’t know, W. 7th St. suffered damage from the storm on Saturday night, March 19th. A large tree blew down causing damage to a power pole, several cars and taking out power. Several neighbors and Franco American had no power on Sunday. It was the first time in the bakery’s long history that they were unable to bake bread on schedule. In spite of connecting to a generator, Franco American customers did not get their Monday delivery.  The jury is still out on whether March came in like a lion AND out like a lamb.

E.’s Dave Drake.  Just like Dave- deceptively simple, endlessly complicated and not topless! Stark’s is a West End Neighborhood Association sponsor. Thank-you for supporting our neighborhood.

Hard to believe but we are in the month of November. Mark your calendars! West End Fall Meeting- Thursday, November 18th at 7 p.m. Meeting held at Assistance League of So. Co. New to You Shop- 5 W. 6th Street. Things quiet down in the winter- so this is a good opportunity to meet and talk with neighbors.

November 5th, Friday- Street sweepers are scheduled to clean our gutters on the first Friday of every month. This is especially crucial when the rainy season approaches. Please move your cars off the curb- usually the sweepers arrive in the early a.m.

November 6th, Saturday- First Saturday Clean Up. Come join us as we learn about and clean the Creek. Get to know your neighbors, and people from other neighborhoods. The Creek connects us all, so we all need to take care of it. Afterwards join us for lunch. A main dish, salad and drinks will be provided. Please bring utensils as we do not want to create more waste. Desserts and side dishes always welcome. Location: Meet at DeMeo Park  Time: 10 A.m.

November 7th, Sunday- 7th Annual Run to Stop Hunger. 10K, 5K, and a 2-mile Family Walk (and scavenger hunt) that start in Railroad Square’s Depot Park at 9 a.m. and runs along the Santa Rosa Creek. Race participants will exit from Prince Memorial Greenway onto Pierson and the finish line will be on W. 6th Street. There will be music and announcing on W. 6th Street shorty after the race begins. Finish line festivities held at Depot Park- and include music, vendors and community booths. For more info or to register for the Run- Fleet Street Sports

November 12- December 12- 1940s Radio Hour- The 1940′s Radio Hour is a holiday treat full of 1940s big-band music, swing dancing, patriotism, and old-fashioned sound effects. Take a musical sentimental journey to a bygone era as you experience this “live” radio broadcast from the Hotel Astor’s Algonquin Room on December 21, 1942. The spirit of that bygone era, when the world was at war and pop music meant “Strike Up the Band” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” (both are in the show), is accurately captured as the harassed producer copes with a drunk lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mike, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and the trumpet playing sound effects man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller. 6th Street Playhouse

November 10th- Special Benefit Showing of 1940′s Radio Hour. The Soroptimist International of Santa Rosa’s benefit will feature an Hors d’oeuvre and wine reception at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30. You can buy them from the West End’s own Marge Jones who recently joined this active community minded organization. Call 542-1235 or email her at sonomamarge@gmail.com

Thanksgiving at Starks Steakhouse- Hoping to enjoy a fine holiday dinner without cooking or dishes or even traveling far? Starks Steakhouse will be serving Thanksgiving Dinner. Thanksgiving dinner will be served from 2 p.m.  to 7 p.m. Make your reservations early!  Starks Steakhouse

The West End is a busy place- there’s always lots to do. Here’s a run down of recent events:

The West End to Hopmonk Full Moon ride was a great success -with over 20 riders enjoying the lovely weather. The group met at DeMeo Park  and then rode to the Hopmonk via the Joe Rodota trail. After a bit of socializing and sustenance (aka beverage and munchies), the group rode back under a full moon back to West End. Some folks continued onto Railroad Square, ultimately ending up at Starks for a debriefing.  See the ride video- Click here! For more photos Click Here!

Leadership Institute for Ecology and Economy had their June Fellows Happy Hour at DeMeo park- The Leadership Institute, dedicated to ensuring a sustainable future,  trains people to be more effective leaders and to educate community leaders and the public to understand that the future of our economy and quality of life are dependent on each other. The Fellows of the Institute were introduced to the West End- a downtown neighborhood with small, efficient homes easily accessible to local businesses. The event was sponsored by  Thomas & Co. Consulting, Allen Thomas is a 2003 graduate of the institute. They were also treated to beer brewed by the West End’s Dave Drake, yummy appetizers made by Andrew Zarrillow and Burning Hawk Wines poured by Nick Papadopoulos and Scott Johnson.  Leadership Institute

303 Hewett Street- Wow! Check out the rehabilitation of the historic cottage located at 303 Hewett Street. This 19th Century Vernacular Box house, built before 1904, had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was sold- and the new owner has brought it back to life. Great care and attention to historically correct detail were made by the project manager- “My Handyman” John Moorhead (236-2577).  This is a living example of the benefit of living in a historic district.  This house would not look the same if it was repaired with T111 siding! (Note: the vinyl windows were added before the rehab)
