April 19th, Thursday SMART public meeting regarding construction to begin on April 27th.  The contractor will be utilizing the SMART property at Railroad Square as a construction material storage and construction staging area. There will be a fence around the SMART property, there may be some dust and noise. Have Questions? This is a good time to ask. April 20th, Saturday- Hand Me Down. West End’s own Tim Sarter (a very busy musician!) will be playing with “Hand Me Down” on Saturday night. Location: Toad in the Hole Time: Music starts around 10 p.m. but there is limited seating so get there early.

April 21st, Saturday – FAMILY DAY at the Sonoma County Museum A Springtime/Earth Day themed Family Day at the Sonoma County Museum! Activities, hands-on crafts, demonstrations, performances and more! Yoga Every Monday & Friday- Join Tara Garland RYT of Wild Orchid Yoga. All levels & all ages welcome, beginners through seasoned yogis & yoginis! Tara Garland is a 200-hour registered yoga teacher and Relax and Renew restorative yoga-trained. Classes are one hour and fifteen minutes of various asana (pose) sequences designed to provide a well-balanced practice. Modifications are offered to make asanas more approachable or more challenging for a student at any level. Bring a yoga mat if you have one (we will have a small selection available to use on a first come, first serve basis). Subtle Hint: On Sunday the entire West End neighborhood will be inundated with Regatta enthusiasts (and their cars.) If  you are going to need street parking… plan ahead! The Grand Fondo is right around the corner. There will be many ways to celebrate the bicycle.

September 23rd, Friday- Unveiling of Chop’s Handcar- A kick off to the Great Handcar Regatta weekend. Location: Chop’s Teen Club 509 Adams Time: 5-7 p.m. Chop’s Teen Club

September 25th, Sunday- The Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta is coming! (As if you didn’t know!) Dress to impress. THE HUBBUB CLUB will open and close the regatta this year, as usual. They will start out near Aroma Roasters in the morning but it’s a surprise where they will be by 5:30…. but never fear because you will hear them coming. September 24th, Saturday- Free Family Day at So. Co. Museum. With activities inspired by their Current exhibit – Customized: The Art and History of the Bicycle including an organized family ride with the Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition. Location: Meet in front of the Museum at noon, for a 3 mile loop that will tour Downtown Santa Rosa’s public art installations before returning to the museum. September 30th, Friday- Whiskey Drome at So. Co. Museum. Museum open late to celebrate the Gran Fondo! Featuring the Whiskey Drome. SCM is part of RadioShack DownTown – a self-guided jaunt through local bars, cafes, and restaurants in Downtown Santa Rosa. Location: Sonoma County Museum Time: 5- 9 p.m.

Even though Westenders are fortunate to have their own historic downtown- Railroad Square, we might occasionally go to the OTHER side of downtown to enjoy what they have to offer. Here’s a few ideas:

Munch Monday January 10-February 28th- The City of Santa Rosa is promoting the downtown, (the East side of downtown, that is) with Munch Mondays.  Diners can select a bevy of tasty food from a mobile gourmet food convey ( aka fancy catering trucks) . Place: The parking lot between the Downtown S. R. Post Office and the Main Library. Time: 1:30am-2pm every Monday. Munch Monday

SRJC Cafe, bakery- opens for spring semester on Wednesday-Friday January 26-May 20th. They feature a seasonal a la carte menu that changes weekly and features organic fruits and vegetables from SRJC’s Shone Farm. They also offer Food & Wine Fridays- food and wine pairings.  A three-course lunch served with a tasting of three Sonoma County wines while students and instructors in the Culinary Arts Program discuss the recipes, the wines, and the principles behind the pairings. Each luncheon begins promptly at 12:30 PM and ends by 2:30 PM. Registration fee of $35 is all inclusive. Enrollment is limited to 24 people per luncheon. FIRST FRIDAY NIGHT SKY programs are offered on the first Fridays of February through May of 2011. These programs, offered at 7:00 and 8:30pm, will be the only planetarium presentations given on these first Friday weekends. First Friday Night Sky content will vary with emphasis on the stars, constellation, planets, and other interesting facts in or about the sky that night. Although admission is free; donations to support SRJC’s Planetarium are gratefully appreciated. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis; so arrive early enough to pick up your free parking permit, return it to your vehicle, and arrive back in the planetarium by the scheduled start time. November 7th, Fall back!  Check your Clocks and Smoke Alarms- Daylight savings time ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. Time to “fall back”- set your clocks one hour earlier. Saving Time, Saving Energy Daylight Saving Time: Its History and Why We Use It The National Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommend that consumers change the battery in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors when we change the clocks for Daylight Saving Time.

Sonoma County Museum- Current exhibit until February 6, 2011 Mad Science- This exhibition explores creative projects inspired by the convergence of art and science. The term “Mad Science” is used to emphasize the edgy and experimental work by this group of Bay Area artists, who are scholars, scientists, and classically trained artists. Represented here is work by artists at varying stages in their careers: Mark Pauline, the founder and director of Survival Research Laboratories, Reuben Margolin and Ned Kahn, who both work internationally on large-scale architectural projects, Alan Rorie, a Stanford-trained neuro-physiologist (Almost Scientific), Nemo Gould, known for kinetic found-object sculpture, and Andrew Sofie, software engineer. The works range from mechanical objects to videos, and from the apparently dangerous to the humorous.

November 16th- Community Toxics Collections- Every week there is a toxics collection somewhere in Sonoma County. Next date for North West Santa Rosa is November 16th. By appointment only. Call (707) 795-2025 or toll-free (877) 747-1870. Call at least 24 hours prior to the collection event. Hours: Tuesdays 4-8 pm Bring your ID to prove residency.

Interesting news tidbits:

Citizen’s Police Academy- Are you interested in learning about the S.R.P.D., its policies and practices? Apply for The Citizen’s Police Academy. Many topics will be covered such as the Criminal Justice System, Patrol Policies and Procedures, Criminal Investigations,  Neighborhood Oriented Policing and  Crime Prevention.  Police  provide the instruction. Academy participants are selected from applications submitted by interested citizens.   Classes begin on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, and run every Wednesday evening  until November 17, 2010. There are two Saturday classes on Sept. 25th, and October 16th. So hurry up and apply online Click Here! West End resident, Sher Ennis will be attending.  We look forward to her sharing her knowledge with the neighborhood.

September 13th, Monday- Prince Memorial Greenway Maintenance- After 10 years, the plants and habitat along the Prince Greenway are doing well… so well in fact that the thick vegetation now compromises the Greenway’s flood capacity. Starting on Sept. 13th, Water Agency crews will begin to trim up and thin out trees downstream of Hwy 101. Sections of the pathway on the North side of the creek will be closed to public access. Pathways on the south side will remain open and alternate routes will be posted. St. Rose Neighborhood News- Have you noticed that the building on the corner of 7th and A St. (once known as the Soggy Doggy) was torn down? The Sonoma County Museum plans a new Sculpture Garden and Program Space in its place. There will be a fenced garden area for museum visitors,  expanded program space for the museum’s family days and special events. It will also feature sculpture from the museum’s collections and the work of regional artists. So. Co. Museum

Very Cozy- The Street Pole Sweater project has become a reality. This art project, spearheaded by Justine Malone, was a joint effort of sponsors,  knitters and those who donated yarn. New Parking Pay Stations in Railroad Square- Railroad Square now have those new parking meters like the ones downtown. The machines take coins or debit/credit cards. West Enders can simply continue to walk to Railroad Square- our own “downtown”.

Don’t let Tax Day get you down. There’s lots of fun things to attend- Music, Earth Day, Pugs and West End talent - You choose!

Can you sing? April 15th, Thursday- Audition to sing the National Anthem at the AMGEN Tour of California! Wine Country Radio is holding auditions for their annual Anthem Contest, 6-8 p.m. at the Russian River Brewing Company. Come prepared to belt out the National Anthem on stage and have your performance video taped. The top 5 performers will have their videos posted on Wine Country Radio websites for radio listeners to vote on their favorite, who will ultimately sing the anthem at the AMGEN Tour of California celebration in Santa Rosa on May 17th!
