DeMeo Park Community Cleanup. Thanks to all the folks who spent their Saturday to clean up DeMeo Park. The park was in sad shape- weeds had invaded, the bocce courts were a wreck , ivy and privets had claimed ownership of the cyclone fences.  After hours of hard labor, the park has improved and wood chips are being spread to prevent new weeds. On future clean ups we will paint and repair the picket fences, continue grooming the bushes and clean up.  Thank you wonderful West Enders, S. R. West Rotary Club, Chop’s Interact Club and Boy Scout Troop 509. DeMeo Park Cleanup Photos

Two important dates for Westenders- April 12th – Public Hearing on DeTurk Round Barn’s Use permit at the Planning Commission and April 14th- DeMeo Park Cleanup. As a neighborhood that cares about where we live, we take part in changes and improvements that will affect the West End.

April 12th, Thursday- DeTurk Round Barn Use Permit at Planning Commission.  This Thursday night S. R. Recreation and Parks Department will be asking the Planning Commission to modify the Conditional Use Permit that governs the operation of the Round Barn. In 2009 neighbors worked with the City for over six months and the impact from the weddings and events over the first year have been minimal. This is due to having a use permit that works. Now the Rec. and Parks department is asking for significant changes. What can you do? #1 Voice your objection to these changes by writing a letter or calling Noah Housh, City Planner, Department of Community Development – telephone 707-543-4322 or e-mail: mailto:nhoush@srcity.org #2 Attend the Planning Commission this Thursday, April 12th meeting starts at 4 p.m. but we are item 10- so this might start anywhere after 4:15 p.m.

Wineyard seeks urban niche in Santa Rosa- The Press Democrat has a nice article about the Wineyard Collective. Many of us have already spent lots of time at D”Argenzio Winery but perhaps you haven’t had a chance to visit the Wineyard. It is a collective tasting room for four local wineries on of them is Shone Farm, the teaching farm for S. R. Junior College. It also has a beer tasting room. No need to drive out to far away tasting rooms… when there is a urban winery within walking distance!

The birds are singing, the sun is shining… Is it winter time? Western Farm is in the news, SMART has announced that they will be able to extend the line to the Guerneville Road Station and a house of despair gets hope.

Neighbors:

Thank Goodness!  This once glorious historic building has had a very sad history of neglect and abuse. West Enders Betsy Hall and Gene Wright have purchased the house on the corner of 7th and Davis and will slowly revive the property. They plan to make it a property that will make the West End proud.  It’s a big project but it will make such a difference to this neighborhood. Thank you!

The Assistance League’s “New to You” shop is sporting a new Art Start design. The West side of the building has been a blank wall and it has proven too tempting for taggers. The new art is 5 panels designed as windows  where one can see people in vintage clothing. This is the final project for the building that has been rehabbed and beautified.

The SMART District announced that two historic railcars stored at Railroad Square are being relocated in advance of the removal of old underground fuel tanks and environmental cleanup. “The tank removal and cleanup mark the preparation of Railroad Square for SMART track construction.” said SMART Real Estate Manager Laura Giraud. The historic railcars, which SMART permitted to be stored at Railroad Square, have a long history of service in Northern California.  The first railcar, removed October 4, was a coach car built in 1916 and modified by Southern Pacific to be a Presidential Coach to transport Southern Pacific executives to Eureka in Northern California. The Presidential Coach was in operation from 1941-1955. The interior of the coach was outfitted with mahogany paneling, stained glass windows and included two staterooms as well as servant’s quarters. The second coach, a dining car that accompanied the Presidential Coach is slated to be relocated as soon as appropriate transportation is scheduled. Ownership of these cars was recently transferred from Santa Rosa residents Lucinda and Wesley Vail to the Timber Heritage Association of Eureka CA. The association plans to run excursion service with these railcars around Humboldt Bay.

If you are interested in what the City of Santa Rosa is planning for the New Railroad Square and Cannery sites (aka SMART site)- this would be a good meeting to attend. The last time the West End heard about this plan it was 68 units of low income Senior Housing. The new proposal will be approx. 82 units with at least 65 of those units low income Family housing. There will also be approx. 1 parking spot for each unit.

Original New Railroad Square Proposal

Community Meeting-

The City of S. R. is partnering with a private developer to build the Cannery mixed-use development project, the first phase of the proposed, multiple-phase New Railroad Square mixed use development project, located in Historic Railroad Square between West Third Street, Santa Rosa Creek, West 6th Street and the railroad tracks. They are applying for a loan that will dictate the type and income level of the proposed housing. This is your opportunity to ask questions, make comments and recommendations.

Location: Finley Community Center, Willow Room 2060 College Ave. Time: 6:30 p.m.
