Do you have roses or other blooms to share? From West End Neighbor, Andre’ Siedentopf: We are building a float for the Rose Parade in a garage on Madison St. It’s a small float with a 1.5″ scale train (Engine and Caboose) on it for the train club we belong too. Check out website: http://redwoodempirels.org/ We are in need of some flowers for it and would prefer to use fresh cut instead of fake or silk. We don’t need a ton of flowers but it would be nice to have a variety especially roses.  I know there a lot of folks in the neighborhood with lots of blooming or about to bloom flowers as you last article states. Could you put the word out and let’s see if anyones willing to donate some of their flowers to us? They can call me or email me either way. My phone number is 972-3733 or email at redwoodempirels@gmail.com We would need the flowers Friday (May 20th) night before the parade, the parade is Saturday May 21st.  Here’s some pictures of the float up to this point: LINK

We’ll be working on the float this Saturday and Sunday afternoon if you want to pop over and take a look.  Thanks so much if you can do this!!

All we need is roses and blooms!

News about West End neighbors and friends.

Arlene Francis Center- The gorgeous historic building that previous housed the New College has morphed into the newest venue for a variety of events. The Community is delighted to have a unique, flexible space for music, happenings, classes and films. The building has been given loving care and is a great attribute to Wilson Street. (Thanks Bruce and Martin- we REALLY appreciate that!) Last Sunday, ShopParty- a collective of artists and crafters,  held their craft fair/art show at the A. F. Center and it was a bustling, fun place to be. To stay current on events at Arlene Francis check out facebook. For Facebook Phobics check out: http://arlenefranciscenter.org/

Neighbor finds Full Moon Bike Ride an inspiration- Last year, West End Neighbor Deborah Coish decided to go on the Full Moon bike ride. She enjoyed it so much she started going on more bike rides and when she realized she could pedal more than 7 miles without collapsing she decided to seriously take up cycling. Fast forward about a year, and Debi is proud to announce that she will ride 50 miles on May 1st in the Tour De Cure for the American Diabetes Assn. Fundraiser. She hopes to raise at least $1000 and if you would like to help her in her quest you can support her go to http://main.diabetes.org/goto/DCOISH Way to go Debi!

Boyce & Coulter  Street Speed signs- Coulter has no stop sign where it intersects with Boyce Street. Cars entering from 9th Street can really shoot down that street while cutting through the West End. Boyce Street a stop sign at Coulter but folks seem to want to speed in spite of it. Boyce & Coulter Street parents are taking an active role in reminding folks to slow down. West Enders are a creative bunch and they have created custom signs that are eye catching and fun. Signs are put in the street during “play time”.

West End Charter School- Westenders attended the S. R.C.S. Board meeting to support a West End Charter School. From Tory Paul:  Great job everyone! We presented a wide variety of viewpoints that were all very unique and well spoken. I was proud of our group. Thanks again to everyone who gave their support, either by coming, speaking or sending along words of encouragement. The West End is truly a special place. West End Vintage Rose Garden- When the DeTurk Round Park was rehabbed, our roses had a rough year. They were pulled out, stored in a neighbor’s yard and then replanted and are now in remarkably great shape. At this point, there are 31 rose bushes, most of the roses are dated prior to the 1930s which keeps with our neighborhood’s historic designation. Stroll on down to the DeTurk Round Barn and enjoy the new rose garden.

DeTurk Commons- The cottages at DeTurk Commons are slowly beginning to glow with color. Originally these houses were mostly white, beige and soft yellow. Slowly new paint jobs are bringing more vibrancy and hues to the streetscape.

In our history, West End neighborhood children were always able to walk to a nearby school. Today our children today are often driven to schools and sometimes the schools don’t offer the programs, classes and outlooks that we desire for our children. Take an hour or two this Wednesday night… to do something about it.

We want to make a positive and enthusiastic presentation! If you are not a parent-tell why having a Charter School is important to you as a home owner, business owner, community member, educator etc. We want lots of different points of view and voices. This is an important meeting… invest your time to give West End kids a school unique, excellent school within walking distance. DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park- Many dogs and their owners are enjoying our beautiful dog park in the heart of the West End. Most of the experiences are good. Unfortunately, there are a few troublesome situations. Dog parks should be safe and friendly for everyone. They are a place for dogs to socialize and exercise. Good communication is key. Common sense, etiquette and the Dog Park rules dictate that dogs are not to be left unattended and that the owner will be responsible and correct (if necessary) their pet’s behavior. That owners will pick up after their dogs. It is also understandable that aggressive dogs and people are not conducive to a positive, community experience at a dog park.  To see the City of Santa Rosa’s Dog Park rules- click here! For a Dangerous and Vicious Animal/Bites: Call the SRPD- 911 or from a cell 707-576-1371 to respond to a situation where an animal has either bitten a person or is menacing the public. You may also file a complaint with the So. Co. Animal Shelter at (707) 565-7100. If you have a dog who has behavior problems… don’t despair. Get help. Animals are not perfect and they don’t come with instruction manuals. Find a trainer or resource to help you resolve the behavior problem.

Not sure what to do with your plastic bags? We can  gladly use them at the dog park. Just place them in one of the mesh bag holders hanging on the fence. We’ll take it from there!

Wanna laugh? Check out the Guilty Dog video. A must see for dog lovers! Click here!

Remember Rocky? He was the dog that endured a horrible beating while tied up to a fence on Wilson Street. He was rescued, nursed back to health and spent some time being trained at the So. Humane Society. He was then placed at at Rotts of Friends where he awaits for a forever home. He has made it through an unbelievable situation, had many people support him and now awaits that final special person to take him home. Check him out: Click here!

Pet Friendly- Lagunitas Tap room. It’s got great beer, good food, music and is Dog friendly. Wish it was in Santa Rosa… but it’s worth the drive to Petaluma. Lagunitas Tap Room

Poodle Day 2011- there is a Poodle Day held every year in Carmel, CA. It sounds like so much fun! There’s many events like a parade and cocktail parties- ALL Poodle friendly!  Carmel is one of most dog friendly cities in the United States. (Hopefully, one day Santa Rosa will also work toward having dog friendly events.) This event benefits Nor-Cal Poodles Rescue. Check it out… there’s lots of time to plan since it’s not until Oct. 1st.
