Thursday was an amazing day in the West End. The re-dedication to Maverick at DeTurk Round Barn Park, the Grand Opening of the DeTurk Round Barn and the Spring West End Meeting all in one day! Meanwhile, the weather went from overcast, to sprinkles, to heavy rain to sun- interesting but maddening to event planners. Here’s an overview of the day:

DeTurk Round Barn’s Dog Park was re-dedicated to fallen K-9 Maverick. Shirlee Zane, a well known dog lover and our So. Co. Supervisor, spoke and presented a resolution honoring the Maverick Dog Park and the West End Neighborhood Association.  As tradition dictates, “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes played as many neighbors, law enforcement officers and K9s took a moment to silently acknowledge the loss of a great K-9 and dog. Maverick’s Partner/Handler/Trainer Officer T. J. Van Bebber, accompanied by his family unveiled the plaque. Bob, Larry and Lou Bertolini of Western Farm Center handed out goodies for all the dogs.

Grand Opening of DeTurk Round Barn. A long awaited moment in time finally arrived, the official public debut of the amazing DeTurk Round Barn. It was a proud moment and the DeTurk Round Barn will finally be known to one and all as one of the most incredible buildings in Sonoma County.

The West End Neighborhood Association Spring Meeting was held, for the first time, in the DeTurk Round Barn. It was a great meeting. Along with our standard of each neighbor introducing themselves, the City of Santa Rosa City Manager Kathy Millard also made the acquaintance of our residents. We had updates about the progress of West End Charter School and The Great West End & Railroad Square Handcar Regatta. Afterwards, we all gathered for a group photo.

Yard vandalized: On December 30th, Thursday evening someone tore up a significant amount of landscaping ( including 2 lavender plants) on the side of of a neighbor’s house (side faces Coulter St. ). It’s not finished yet, but here is a tantalizing glimpse of the DeTurk Round Barn. It is hoped that the project will complete is the next few weeks… but the wait will be worth it. Thanks to Rich Hovden for allowing us to take a peek!

A few highlights: The amazing floor is made of recycled shipping crates and the only source of heat is through the floor. The interior walls were left original to pay homage to the historic use of the barn. The building now boasts a catering kitchen, bathrooms, an elevator, 3 stairways and a high tech audio/visual display. The ceiling has a large fan that circulates the air and the skylights open for temperature control. The exterior of the barn will be highlighted with uplights and the surrounding park will also be lighted.

The DeTurk Round Barn and Park project started this year in April and it’s anticipated that it might be finished before Christmas. Here’s an update:

Dog Park: The Dog park has been completed and is open. A new Maverick Plaque will be installed. The gate that was not staying closed has been repaired. Unfortunately, the beautiful green grass has turned into a muddy mess. Several dog park users have wanted to know who they could make comments to about the mud. Send them to Rich Hovden, City of S. R.

Park Landscaping: The sod and  plants have been put in. You may have noticed the use of grasses and even grapevines.  The DeTurk Vintage Rose garden has been replanted in their new location. Gina designed the plan for the roses based on their color, type and size. It will be gorgeous.

Barn Exterior: The exterior is nearly finished and only has a “punch list” for a few final items. The lighting is working but has not been turned on yet. No one will confirm a date for this as of yet.

The Exterior is almost finished 11-15

Barn Interior: The interior has a little way to go. The wood flooring starts this week downstairs. The light fixtures are being put in upstairs. It will have to be completely finished prior to final notice. They anticipate around the 21st of December but of course, things happen and that may change.

Now the Big EXCITING news!

The FIRST wedding has been booked and they live in the neighborhood.  West End lovebirds Katie Vrooman and Justin Bar will tie the knot in the newly renovated DeTurk Round Barn. Isn’t that romantic?

The last couple of weeks have been very busy. Recent photos from these events are in the West End’s photo gallery. Many of us have always known that Downtown is the place to live- but apparently others are starting to discover it for themselves- see Fall Santa Rosa Magazine info below.

DeTurk Round Barn construction project is nearing the end. The exterior of the building and grounds may be completed as early as mid-November. The interior work may be finished by the beginning of December. Either way, the grounds have been cleaned up in preparation for landscaping and some of the final details are starting to show up like lighting and bike racks. For more photos click here!

There’s a beautiful spread on Railroad Square restaurants and pubs. Welcome downtown!
