Artists and Performers in the West End- Our neighborhood is home to many creative people. For an example, a singer-songwriter (Ken Risling) was spotted on a recent day at DeMeo Park. Ken says he was driving by the park and was inspired to stop and work on a song he is composing.

February holds two very important meetings for West End residents. One is about the uses of the DeTurk Round Barn and the other about an Asphalt plant- both issues can really affect the quality of life in the West End so they must be examined with care.

February 2nd, Thursday- DeTurk Round Barn Use Permit- Neighborhood Meeting. The City of SR would like to make changes to the DeTurk Round Barn’s use permit. City of Santa Rosa Project Planner Noah Housh 543-4322 nhoush@srcity.org Location: DeTurk Round Barn 819 Donahue Street Time: 6 p.m.

February 8th, Wednesday- BoDean Asphalt Neighborhood Meeting  This is your chance to ask about the BoDean’s request to install three new 85 foot storage silos at their asphalt plant on Maxwell Court. City of S. R. project planner- Bill Rose 543-3253  wrose@srcity.org. Location: DeTurk Round Barn 819 Donahue Street Time: 7 p.m.

DeMeo Park Recycle Station- Conservation Corps of North Bay helps at risk youth get their lives back on track with a year’s worth of job training, work experience along with an education to get a GED or H. S. Diploma. This is especially wonderful because some of the Corpsmembers and staff call the West End Home. CCNB build, distribute and maintain all recycling drop off stations. They will also pick up, on a regular basis, all aluminum, glass, plastic containers and recyclable paper and cardboard deposited in the bins. Another recycle bin will be located at DeTurk Round Barn Park. http://www.conservationcorpsnorthbay.org

Don has been devoted to fostering the relationship with Santa Rosa’s Korean sister city, Jeju-do. This Snoopy will be  placed in the main park (Citizen Welfare Park) of Jeju City. The 30” bronze Snoopy will stand on top of his Korean dog house made of black lava stone, with a red sand roof. Roses bushes will be planted next to Snoopy and a nearby walking path will be named, “Santa Rosa Way” in honor our our City. Safe travels, Don!

No More Railcars. The last vintage railroad car was recently removed from the SMART site. All four cars, that made their home in Railroad Square for many years, have been transported to their new home with the Timber Heritage Association. It would have delighted locals, tourists and rail enthusiasts to have the cars on display near our historic depot but dreams like these are not always financially possible. In the meantime, it is absolutely wonderful that they will be preserved and displayed by the museum. http://timberheritage.org

The birds are singing, the sun is shining… Is it winter time? Western Farm is in the news, SMART has announced that they will be able to extend the line to the Guerneville Road Station and a house of despair gets hope.

Neighbors:

Thank Goodness!  This once glorious historic building has had a very sad history of neglect and abuse. West Enders Betsy Hall and Gene Wright have purchased the house on the corner of 7th and Davis and will slowly revive the property. They plan to make it a property that will make the West End proud.  It’s a big project but it will make such a difference to this neighborhood. Thank you!

Thanksgiving… a time to reflect and be grateful for the good things in our lives.

Our Fall meeting was very informative. Special guest Supervisor Shirlee Zane came by to give us an update on SMART. Shirlee is no stranger to the West End. She frequently rides her bike through the area and said that she admires our neighborhood. She is a well-known dog lover and even brought one of her dogs to the meeting. She also opened the new DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park in March. Shirlee, also a member of the SMART board, had attended that day’s Railroad square rally in support of SMART and was pleased by the impressive showing of supporters. Her report had a positive outlook on the project.

Santa Rosa Rec & Parks reported on the current status of the DeTurk Round Barn and the events. There will be an open house on December 10th for anyone who would like to see inside of the barn and would like to inquire about renting it for events. You can bring your dog to take a photo with Santa too. Rec & Park would like to change the use permit to allow for number of people and hours. There will be a public meeting and formal process for this- so stay tuned.

Neighbors are what makes the West End special. At our meeting, new and established neighbors described their West End history. Allen Thomas gave the West End year in review… and that covered many of the events and happenings in our busy neighborhood. Good meeting!

Shirlee Zane and her Westie.

This is another example of how amazing our creeks are and why we need to work together to maintain and preserve this natural resource. See you along the creek… Alistair
