DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park- Many dogs and their owners are enjoying our beautiful dog park in the heart of the West End. Most of the experiences are good. Unfortunately, there are a few troublesome situations. Dog parks should be safe and friendly for everyone. They are a place for dogs to socialize and exercise. Good communication is key. Common sense, etiquette and the Dog Park rules dictate that dogs are not to be left unattended and that the owner will be responsible and correct (if necessary) their pet’s behavior. That owners will pick up after their dogs. It is also understandable that aggressive dogs and people are not conducive to a positive, community experience at a dog park.  To see the City of Santa Rosa’s Dog Park rules- click here! For a Dangerous and Vicious Animal/Bites: Call the SRPD- 911 or from a cell 707-576-1371 to respond to a situation where an animal has either bitten a person or is menacing the public. You may also file a complaint with the So. Co. Animal Shelter at (707) 565-7100. If you have a dog who has behavior problems… don’t despair. Get help. Animals are not perfect and they don’t come with instruction manuals. Find a trainer or resource to help you resolve the behavior problem.

Not sure what to do with your plastic bags? We can  gladly use them at the dog park. Just place them in one of the mesh bag holders hanging on the fence. We’ll take it from there!

Wanna laugh? Check out the Guilty Dog video. A must see for dog lovers! Click here!

Remember Rocky? He was the dog that endured a horrible beating while tied up to a fence on Wilson Street. He was rescued, nursed back to health and spent some time being trained at the So. Humane Society. He was then placed at at Rotts of Friends where he awaits for a forever home. He has made it through an unbelievable situation, had many people support him and now awaits that final special person to take him home. Check him out: Click here!

Pet Friendly- Lagunitas Tap room. It’s got great beer, good food, music and is Dog friendly. Wish it was in Santa Rosa… but it’s worth the drive to Petaluma. Lagunitas Tap Room

Poodle Day 2011- there is a Poodle Day held every year in Carmel, CA. It sounds like so much fun! There’s many events like a parade and cocktail parties- ALL Poodle friendly!  Carmel is one of most dog friendly cities in the United States. (Hopefully, one day Santa Rosa will also work toward having dog friendly events.) This event benefits Nor-Cal Poodles Rescue. Check it out… there’s lots of time to plan since it’s not until Oct. 1st. Cats & Birds- good separately but together not so much-  A bird bath is an essential feature for gardeners trying to attract birds. Birdbaths should be placed in an open area about 10 feet away from a sheltering tree or large shrub. Close enough for fast flight to safety but far enough away to be out of reach of a cat lying in wait. Speaking of cats, a small bell on Fluffy’s collar can help give birds a bit of notice.

Animal Lovers are always happy to find a Pet Friendly business, event or activity. Be sure to show your appreciation by becoming a loyal customer.

Western Farm Center, located in the heart of the West End, has always been a fun place to “go shopping” with your dog. Not only do they have a vast selection of pet related products, but the staff is very knowledgeable about any questions you might have. The best part, at least for your dog, will be the treat they will get at the check out counter. Western Farm Center

Railroad Square loves dogs too! – Dog lovers will be delighted when they walk by the Cast Away Yarn Shop . Shop owner Justine Malone has set up a comfy living room scene in her front window where Olive, her adorable Boston Terrier, lazes in front of the “fireplace”. FYI- You won’t see Olive every day- she works only part-time.

Pet Friendly Cafe- Kudos to Rendez Vous Bistro. In true French style, they welcome well-behaved canines to dine with their humans on their patio. Rendez Vous Bistro is located at 614 Fourth Street Santa Rosa. Let’s support our pet friendly businesses to show them we appreciate them. Check out their menu- click here.

Anyone need to add some new fur people to their home?-   St. Rose resident, Denise Hill reports: These teenage twins (to clarify, we’re talking about cats) showed up on our doorstep the week before Christmas very thin and cold. We’ve named them Tux and Edo. Not sure if they’re girls or boys. When they allow us to get more personal we’ll find out.  They picked the right foster home since they now have a wind and rain proof outdoor bedroom complete with Thermacare 12-hour heat packs when its super chilly at night. They also get 2 square meals a day. This annoys the heck out of our Calico, Fiona, who spends feeding time glaring at them from our office window – if looks could kill they would be in kitty heaven right now. Later, other cats arrived- the number is at 4 or so. If you’ve been looking for a Sylvester kitty or another purring friend- contact Denise.

A historic restoration! Another West End historic home renewal is happening on the corner of Decker and Dutton. This house has had a long, checkered past- the new owners are carefully renovating this little beauty.

Recent Home Sales: With the real estate market in flux and a West End landlord who has found it necessary to sell several properties- there’s lots of activity. Yes, there has been “flipping” -homes bought by investors, quickly beautified for resale (often without benefit of  permit one suspects ) but the end result may be new West End owners/residents who can enjoy downtown living. Here’s a few recent sales: Nov 28th- 135 W. 7th Street; Dec 12- 225 W. 8th St. $322,000; December 5, 107 Decker $170,000.

Santa Paws at Western Farm- In spite of the rain and chilly weather, hundreds of dogs, plenty of cats, a parakeet, a maka bird, a rooster and a horse showed up to take a photo with Santa. Remember Rocky the Dog? Rocky was the poor Rottweiler-mix pup who suffered serious head injuries when he was beaten in March and left tied to a fence on Wilson Street. In spite of all the medical care, interest and attention- Rocky exhibited some behavior issues that made it difficult for him to find a home. (Go figure.)  Don Malone, Director of Operations at So. Humane Society, informs that Rocky was placed in a rescue in Woodland CA named Rotts of Friends. Don says he checked them out and found it to be a very nice place, which does rescues, training and placement. Rocky was transferred there in Oct. The hope is that eventually they will be able to place him if not he has a place to stay for the rest of his life. Thanks to the Sonoma Humane Society and Rotts of Friends for giving Rocky a chance.

November 14th, Sunday- West End Poodle Party at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park the second Sunday of every month. It’s a delightful sight to see Pretty Prancing Poodles parading around the Park! This is a great opportunity for Poodles and their owners to socialize. The weather forecast calls for great weather. We will take a group photo at 11:45 a.m. This is a party for poodles but all friendly dogs/breeds are welcomed. Location: DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park 819 Donahue Street Time: 11 A.M.  Facebook

November 21st, Sunday- Pug Play Day at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park. Watch cuddly, darling pugs romping and play with other pugs.  Very cute! Location: DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park Time: 3 p.m. Questions?  click here!

Dog Park Update & News- The new dog park has been established and the one thing that is missing is the Memorial Plaque dedicated to Maverick, a K9 who lost his life in the line of duty. Rest assured, since the old plaque had been worn and damaged, a new plaque has been ordered and will be placed in the new dog park with proper fanfare. Date & time to be announced.

Aggressive Dog issue: Dog parks are a place for well-behaved dogs to socialize, exercise, smell and other doggie activities. Many folks who come to the dog park are regulars. They are great owners who are in tune with their dogs and good at communicating with other dog owners.  Dogs have different styles of play and different energy levels. Some dogs just want to chase the ball. Young dogs are learning to how to socialize. It is usually a great experience. There have been a few (very few thank goodness) reports of aggressive dogs at our park. Yes, the rule is no aggressive dogs (or people) allowed in dog park.If you find yourself in a situation where an aggressive dog is bothering your dog or even you- take action and be assertive. React according to the degree of aggression. Try communicating with the owner and alerting them that the situation is uncomfortable. If you feel any threat to you or your dog – leave the park.  It takes a village – so communicate with the other dog owners who use the park to alert them to this potential issue. If the problem dog’s owner gets enough negative feedback, perhaps they will get help to learn how to correct the dog’s behavior or just not attend a dog park.

Did you find leashes in the dog park? 3 dog leashes were recently left in the dog park, if you found them please call Allen Thomas (707) 477-8422

Free Pit Fix: The City of Santa Rosa and unincorporated Sonoma County requires that all pit bulls 4-months of age or older are spayed or neutered. Animal Care & Control offers a limited number of free ‘pit fixes’ each week to residents of these areas. To schedule a free spay/neuter surgery for your pet, call 579-SPAY.

Dog Friendly Places and events: We are on the lookout for dog-friendly events and places. Western Farm Center is an excellent example of a wonderful place that welcomes your well behaved dogs. The CA Welcome Center in the Depot Building in Historic Railroad Square also welcomes dogs and offers dog biscuits and water. Railroad Scare is another wonderful opportunity for dogs and their owners to have fun in a welcoming environment. Let us know if you know of a place or event that welcomes dog and we will pass it along in our next Doggie related email.
