Yard vandalized: On December 30th, Thursday evening someone tore up a significant amount of landscaping ( including 2 lavender plants) on the side of of a neighbor’s house (side faces Coulter St. ). They uprooted several plants then tossed them across the yard. They were clearly uprooted, so it did not look like an animal could have done it. This is a report from Jennifer Watson, the West End’s Neighborhood Watch coordinator in the Upper West End (North of 9th Street).  Jennifer Watson has done an exceptional job of organizing and communicating crime reports. As neighbors, we all need to work together to be pro-active to criminal activity.  Today’s Alert:

CRIME ALERT – CAR ROBBERY – Upper West End area (North of 9th)

Hi Neighbors,

Neighbor Russ Toran reports: “At 6:08 am this morning (Wed, 12/15) my car was broken into at 932 Ripley St (at the end of 11th Street.) The Sony AM/FM compact disk player was taken.  My car was locked because the alarm went off, however, there was no sign visible sign of forced entry like a broken window. They must have used those devices AAA uses when you lock your keys in the car. They went through the glovebox and the trunk. Too bad the downtown area of Santa Rosa is like this. This is the second time my car has been broken into to in the the past two years.”

If you see or hear suspicious activity in the neighborhood: Call the Police. Non-emergency 528-5222 and Emergency 911 (on Cell phones- call 528-5222 for both). Also call (or email) your neighbors to report situations or to get backup.    Let’s keep communicating to keep our neighborhood safer!

Sincerely,   Jennifer Watson, 121 10th Street, 568-3735

Awareness and communication are the two tools that we can use as neighbors to keep out neighborhood safe. The following two neighbor reports are an example of communication- the second part, of course, is to be watchful and engaged.

W. 6th Street Burglary- Neighbors Denise & Ben report that their home was burglarized.  Someone entered through a closed, possibly unlocked window- took valuables and exited through a rear door. This happened sometime between October 20th & 22nd.

Bicyclists Beware! West End resident Ken Risling discovered a bare, steel wire strung across Eddie Lane in Sebastopol. This wire was about “neck high” and could have cause severe injury to a bicyclist or anyone else. This happened in Sebastopol… but could happen else where. See full story- Press Demo

Chicken roaming Boyce Street. A little hen is roaming the West End. It spent a little time in Rachel & Carissa’s yard (obviously looking for delicious organic treats) and then flew to the roof next door. If you’re missing your chicken- she was on Boyce Street around 1 p.m. on Friday, October 29th.

Crime Alert: A neighbor reports that yesterday when she got home- she saw a man selling strawberries door to door. When she heard her doorbell ring, she didn’t answer the bell because she didn’t want to buy strawberries. The bell kept ringing & ringing, so she looked out the window to verify who it was… and right then the guy started jiggling her door knob. Luckily her door was locked! Thanks for the report. Carol Dean was appointed by councilwoman Jane Bender to the Santa Rosa Board of Public Utilities. She is filling a seat vacated by a resigning board member and will serve until December. Carol served several years on the BPU and also currently serves on the state North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Crime Alert- Monday evening around 11 p.m.- an intruder entered a Boyce Street backyard- and was frightened away by an alert neighbor and a little barking dog. Evidently the person jumped over a fence and was gathering items in the yard to steal. The neighbor heard an unusual noise and looked out his back door to check on things. When he saw that the person did not belong in the yard- he hollered at him. The intruder dropped everything and hopped over another fence. (The little dog was also giving the guy the business.)  Meanwhile, the neighbor’s wife called SRPD. This is a good example of the importance of knowing your neighbors and using the principals of Neighborhood Watch. Thank-you neighbors!

Live at Juilliard- Many West End Neighbors enjoyed this all-age, dog friendly concert series. It you were planning to go and didn’t it’s unfortunate as the Final Concert was on Sunday, August 15th. Better luck next year!

From Boyce Street: I want to report that our car was burglarized on Friday night.  My wife left it unlocked and the thieves stole all the change from the ashtray, and a personal check.  They also rummaged through the kids’ dvds, but I don’t think they actually took any of them; they just left them strewn about.  This is the third or fourth time this has happened to our cars.  Each time the car had been left unlocked.  Mostly the thieves just steal the change from the ashtray, but in the past they have also taken an iPod, and this time a check. It’s not so much the small amount of money and property we have lost, but the idea that someone is outside robbing us while we sleep is unnerving.  We have gotten the impression that people are walking the street each night checking car door handles, taking things from the cars if they open.  We are going to start leaving the porch light on at night to cast a little more light onto the cars in the driveway.  I have filed a police report about this incident, although I have let others go by without filing.   Ethan

Daisy lives at 300 Boyce Street, email Katherine at chadandkj@comcast.net

Our old kitty daisy went missing Saturday night. A neighbor found her disoriented/sleepy behind their car and kindly placed her on our porch bench in a blanket. When we came home she was gone and we have not seen her since. Given her age (17) we believe she may have passed but we do not know where. If anyone finds her we would like to know so we can take care of her. She is a grey/white cat, small/thin due to age. Any news would be appreciated.

Thanks, Katherine

New Car break-in occurred last night (March 14th). Resident went out to carport (located on Hewett St.) to find windows smashed.

West End Neighbors take notice!

On Wednesday Morning ( 2 to 5 a.m.) 3 cars on Jefferson St. (near W. 7th) were broken into. Stereo systems and speakers were ripped out and other items stolen. One car in particular suffered $4000 of damage and nothing was stolen except prescription sunglasses.

We need to be vigilant about keeping our eyes and ears open. Have a conversation with your neighbors and discuss the situation so everyone is aware and willing to call police and/or their neighbors should a suspicious situation arise. Take special consideration to where you park your cars. Motion lights and security lighting are a good idea.

Remember that our neighbors on W. 7th also recently had both of their cars stolen: a Maroon 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon and a Gold 1997 Previa Minivan. At last report, they had not been found or returned. The family is very upset about it- (and without cars!)

There was also an unverified report about an attempted truck theft on Hewett (on the West side of Dutton) on Sunday night.

Our next West End Neighborhood Association meeting is on Thursday, March 18th at 7 p.m. at the Assistance League of So. Co. 5 W. 6th Street. As a timely coincidence, one of our special guests is Santa Rosa’s new Chief of Police, Tom Schwedhelm.
