BBBBRRRR!!! What happened? Welcome to November.
Mark your calendars. The West End Neighborhood Association’s Fall meeting will be on November 17th, Thursday 7 p.m. at DeTurk Round Barn. It’s a good time to see your neighbors before the holidays and winter set in.

November 4th, Friday- First Friday Night Sky programs are offered September 2011 to  May 2012.  Learn interesting facts in or about the sky that night. Free but donations to support SRJC’s Planetarium are gratefully appreciated. Seating on a first-come, first-served basis; so arrive early enough to pick up your free parking permit, return it to your vehicle, and arrive back at planetarium by show start. Location:SRJC Planetarium in Lark Hall, Room 2001, Santa Rosa Campus Time:7:00 and 8:30pm

November 5th, Saturday- Prince Memorial Greenway clean up/ First Saturday Cleanup  First Saturday and the City of Santa Rosa’s Storm Water Team are joining forces to clean up Prince Memorial Greenway. Stephanie Lennox, Storm Water Team’s environmental educator will be on hand to provide interesting facts. This would be a great time to volunteer for a late season cleanup. Bring the whole family – clean up  age appropriate for ages 5 to adult. E. residents that means races will be on Pierson and W. 6th from 9 a.m. to 11:30 THIS Saturday so plan accordingly. November 10th, Thursday- S. R. Sneak Preview of “Division III: Football’s Finest”. Santa Rosa native and West End’s Catherine DePrima’s (of Boyce Street) son Marshall Cook is debuting his first feature film here next week. The film was inspired by Santa Rosans who influenced him is donating is half of the box office receipts Cardinal Newman Youth Empowerment Services. Movie stars Andy Dick, Adam Carolla, Marshall Cook, Bryan Callen and Sally Kirkland. Q&A with Andy Dick & director Marshall Cook.  Cost is $10 Buy tickets at MarshallCook.com  Location: Roxy 14 Stadium, 85 Santa Rosa Avenue Time: 7:30 p.m  Press Demo

West End traffic alert: November 5th, Saturday- Run4Wishes 5 & 10 K Run-Walk.  Between the hours of 9 am and 11:30 am on Saturday, half of W. 6th street will be blocked off for runners, vehicles may still pass. W. 6th street will not be closed at any time. Volunteers on Pierson will briefly halt traffic for runners exiting the Pierson Reach.  Want to be involved?   Register for Race by visiting the Fleet Feet Sports store. Wine Down, Eat Up Thursdays- Ray D’Argenzio owner of  D’Argenzio Winery says that he will continue to host this event through the Fall and winter seasons each Thursday from 5-9 p.m. It features live music- this week Chris Rovetti and the Meatballs, wine and four food trucks. SRPD K9s have new life saving, bullet resistance vests.  K9s are often the first to get punched, kicked, stabbed or shot. Concerned about the safety of the SRPD K9s, Allen Thomas and Lea Barron-Thomas worked with a number of generous community members and the S. R. Police Department to purchase and donate these vests and also new bite suits, a vital training tool for K9 training. The very generous community members who also contributed: Western Farm Center, Betsy Hall & Gene Wright, Jennifer Watson, Zyromski & Konicek Attorneys at Law, Exchange Club,  Burbank Savings, Rick Dellar & Lehman and Waggener Dental Practice.  Special thanks goes to our good friends- Larry & Lou Bertolini at Western Farm for making this gift possible. The West End Kid’s Halloween Parade was a wonderful event. Friends and neighbors met to show off their outfits and to parade around the neighborhood and then everyone was off for trick and treating. Lots of West End houses were decked out for the enjoyment of little goblins.  Neighbor William Basie Daye III, a professional D. J., inspired us with music and a light show and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club wowed everyone with their spectacular human powered vehicles. Special thanks to Will Smith- who came up with the idea, Jacquie Smith for organizing the event and Gladis Calderson who took video in hand to record the event.  Good old fashioned neighborhood fun! News tidbits from the West End and Railroad Square

The West End Neighborhood was recognized by the City of Santa Rosa for participating in their Park Clean Up and Improvement Program. The West End has adopted the DeMeo Bocce courts. Every spring, neighbors organize a clean up of the courts and park. The courts are tended during the bocce season. West End Neighbors also were instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Vintage Rose Garden and Dog Park at DeTurk Round Barn Park. Great job!

DeMeo Park Bulletin Board- Speaking of neighbors improving our parks, DeMeo Park has a new bulletin board- actually it is a reuse of the bulletin board that used to be at DeTurk Round Barn park. Thanks to David Ernst and Allen Thomas for installing it. Go by and check it out!

Movie Maker: Catherine DePrima’s son Marshall Cook will be screening his movie- Division 3, Football’s Finest in Santa Rosa on Thursday, November 10th at the Roxy Theatre at 7:30pm. There will be a Q&A with Marsh and Andy Dick.  Division 3 is a college football movie with Andy Dick, Will Sasso, Mo Collins, Will Sasso, Debra Wilson and more. You can get ticket’s on line at  http://www.marshallcook.com They’re only $10 and Marshall’s split is going toward a Charity. Not bad for a boy who used to live on Boyce Street!

Snoopy in S. Korea- Santa Rosa’s “Sister City” in South Korea is Jeju Island. For many years, Don Taylor (restaurant owner of Omelette Express) has forged a relationship between our two cities. Don has been instrumental in getting the first Peanut statue in all of Korea. The statue is a beautiful rendition of Snoopy in bronze and he will be placed on a Korean dog house of black lava stone with a red sand stone roof. To see photos go to Omelette Express. New Raw Bar at the Steakhouse- Stark’s Steakhouse’s well-known Happy Hour, delicious beef or a light bite later in the evening makes it a favorite destination for West Enders. With their revamped menu, we can now look forward to enjoying sustain­able seafood. Check out the new raw bar through the window as you enter the dining room, where you will see sea­food chefs shucking their hearts out daily. Stark’s Steakhouse is located at 521 Adam’s Street in a historic restaurant site that was loving restored and improved by Mark & Terri Stark. Stark’s is also a West End Neighborhood Association sponsor. Thank-you!

The Bones are a hit

New to You Shop- The Assistance League will have a a brand new mural on their building on the Adams Street side. It will look like old fashioned shop windows and besides bring a little life to that side of their building, it will hopefully deter tagging. The Assistance League has made many improvements to their building. West Enders appreciate the renovation and enjoy having the shop right in the neighborhood. The Assistance League is a sponsor of the West End Neighborhood Association. Thank-you!

Wine Down Thursdays- Don’t forget that every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. is Wine Down Thursday’s at D’Argenzio’s Winery. This Thursday will feature jazzy caberet music from The Moonbeams, 4 food trucks and, of course, D’Argenzio wines. New restaurant- Iron Stone California Casual Cuisine serving Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Sunday Brunch. Opening October 3rd in Historic Railroad Square. Iron Stone is located in the Historic Hotel La Rose at308 Wilson Street Open 7 days 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Rail Cars- For many years, there have been four rail cars sitting on the SMART site. In September 2010, two of the rail cars left for their new home with the Timber Heritage Association. Another railcar was moved this month and the last one has been moved to the center or the SMART site waiting for it’s day to move to it’s new home Before you know it- they will be gone.  For more info on their new home: Timber Heritage Association.

West End Artists- end of April

We are very fortunate, in the West End, to live amongst creative, imaginative residents. We also have live theater and a theater that shows independent, foreign and classic films right in the neighborhood. The West End Arts and Theater District has a nice ring… let’s use it!

April 22nd, Friday- Songwriters in the Round. Those of you who were at the opening of the DeTurk Round Barn will remember West Ender Ken Risling‘s performance with Oona Risling-Sholl. This Friday, he has another show, this one with three other songwriters — Rob Heath, Mike Ehlers, and Larry Potts. As with last year’s Hopmonk show, it will be a Nashville-style round-robin, with each songwriter taking turns performing their originals. Proud West End Mother, Catherine DePrima reports that her son Marshall Cook’s feature film directorial debut “Division III, Football’s Finest” is completed. Marshall not only directed, he also wrote the script and acted in it and edited it. The team’s quarterback is named Mitch DePrima (a nod to his mom).  The cast includes Marshall Cook, Mo Collins, Andy Dick, Debra Wilson and Will Sasso. Every Sunday Night – West End DJ Katie Vrooman has a specialty radio show called  “Great Dames, Vintage Chicks,” a collection of torch singers, big band singers and jazz vocalists from the 1930’s- 1960’s. Katie hand selects all the music from the show and talks about it as well. You can also hear Katie on Monday- Friday during mid-day- But the Sunday night show (10 p.m. to midnight) is about female singers who “carry the torch”. The KRUSH 95.9

CHOP’s Artist Series Video and upcoming event: There is a great link on the Press Democrat of a video of the Chop’s Artist Series that was captured at the Art Gala.
