It’s been a busy summer with lots of fun events happening in the West End.

The West End Summer Picnic and BBQ was a friendly and relaxed gathering of friends and neighbors. This year, we  started the event off with our first ever Bicycle Parade. From the Hennepin Crawler to  Todd Barricklow’s Two Penny bicycle to festive, decorated bicycles- it was an exciting of collection self-propelled wheeled objects. For photos of the event, Click Here! Thanks goes to Western Farm for use of their huge BBQ and the hay bales and to Bob Bertolini for always taking good care of us. Guy Dean and Heather Rosales for slaving over the hot grill. Maggie O’Brien, Jennifer Watson and Frank Keene serving as Bicycle Parade safety monitors.

West End Summer Bocce has been a great success in spite of cooler than expected evenings. Last week, La Palmarcito Market treated everyone to their wonderful cerviche and salsa. David Farish, of Krank Boom Clank, amused one and all (but the dogs) with another mutant ride-able sculptures of delight named Murray the Fish. Remember, Bocce is every Friday night at DeMeo Park. CHOP’s Teen Club Summer Art Gala was an impressive collection of teen art and talent. The art displayed was by the Side by Side Professional Art Series which teamed professional artists with teens. The great food was catered by CHOP’S catering crew. It was a enjoyable event and excellent opportunity to see everything CHOP’s offers. For Photos Click Here!

BBQ & Bicycle Parade This Saturday!

The West End Neighborhood Association’s annual summer BBQ is a long established tradition. This year, we will also have our first ever Bicycle parade before our neighborhood BBQ.

Saturday, July 17th – Bike Parade at DeMeo Park at 1:30 p.m.     BBQ at DeMeo Park at 3  p.m.

West End’s First Ever Bicycle Parade. This year we will have a bicycle parade proceeding the BBQ.  The fabulous Hennepin Crawler, created by West End  artists Krank Boom Clank, will lead the parade. Whether you have a bicycle, wagon, stroller or roller blades- everyone is invited to join in the fun. The route for the parade will wind throughout the West End Neighborhood and is just under 1 mile in length. Decorations are not required, of course, but are heartily encouraged.

West End’s Annual BBQ at DeMeo Park. Join your friends and neighbors at DeMeo Park for food, frivolity and fun. Bring a dish to share. Remember to bring serving utensils and mark your serving plates. Neighbors are invited to bring their own resuable plates and utensils. West End Neighborhood Association provides hamburgers, hotdogs, beverages, utensils and plates.

We need volunteers: For BBQ set up- (if you would like to help out show up at DeMeo Park at noon), BBQ clean up, Bocce court prep. The event would also benefit from kid-friendly activities/games such as face painting, water balloons and such- so present yourself for duty on Saturday if you are willing. We also usually need tables for the food- if you have any to lend- let us know. Allen (707) 477-8422.

West End Summer Bocce Every Friday at 6 p.m. at DeMeo Park. Join your friends and neighbors at beautiful DeMeo Park. Bring food and drinks to share. This is an all age, dog friendly event. To keep the event enjoyable and comfortable for all- please remember to observe Park rules: No glass, dogs on leashes. Wear layers for chilly nights.

Has City of Santa Rosa Rec & Park Department hired new gardeners? No! That’s the West End’s own master gardener Dr. Deborah Crippen taking time from her busy Vet (Lakeside Pet Hospital) practice to prepare DeMeo Park for Bocce Night. You’re awesome, Deb!  Allen Thomas ( Thomas & Co. Consulting) has spent much of the day grooming the courts and will probably be too tired to make it to bocce! Thank you, Allen! Tomorrow night promises to be delightful reunion of neighbors and friends at Bocce… dress in layers- it might be a little chilly. Saturday’s Luther Burbank Parade should be lovely. Weather predictions state that there might be rain on Monday for the AMGEN and downtown festivals- let’s hope they’re wrong.

This Friday night- May 14th at 6 p.m.- West End Summer Bocce’s opening night. DeMeo Park awaits.  Neighbors have spent time prepping the courts and spreading new trail bark in the social area. Time to get together and socialize, play bocce and savor shared treats. See you there!

May 13th, Thursday     16th Annual Bike to Work Day.   Bike to Work Day is the premier bicycling event taking place in all of Northern California- all nine Bay Area counties participate. The event is just one day of many events taking place in May as part of National Bike Month. May 17, Monday Tour of California Stage Two Finish: For the fifth consecutive year, the Tour of California returns to Santa Rosa. Best Place to Watch: The Stage 2 Finish Line at Third Street and Santa Rosa Avenue in Courthouse Square or Railroad Square will be a perfect vantage point from which to cheer on the cyclists as they make their last push down Wilson Street on the way to the finish line. The riders are expected to enter downtown Santa Rosa around 3 PM on Monday, May 17th.  Many activities and a festival is planned.  The band Baby Seal Club will on the Santa Rosa Festival stage from 12:00- 2:30pm. March 3, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.- City of S. R.  Neighborhood Meeting for New Railroad Square Project (SMART site). Meeting location: Chop’s DeMeo Teen Club, 509 Adams Street. You are invited to attend a meeting regarding the New Railroad Square Project. April 24th, Saturday at 11 a.m.- West End Annual Bocce Court cleanup at DeMeo Park. Neighbors prepare the courts for our Summer bocce season. Bring tools and gloves. Don’t forget a hat and sunblock.

May 1, Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.- West End Neighborhood Garage sale. It’s time for Spring Cleaning! Join your neighbors in reducing storage and making room. The garage sale will be publicized- if you would like to participate pitch in $5 to help cover the costs. Rain Day – May 8th.

May 14th, Friday 6 p.m.- West End Summer Bocce season begins. Join your friends and neighbors to dine, dish the dirt and, of course, play bocce! Bring food or drink to share. Everyone is welcomed. A good event for children and well-behaved dogs. Season ends on Sept. 17th.

Hand-Car Regatta a Unparalled Success!

On Sunday September 27th, throngs of folks attended the 2nd Annual Dr. Erasmus P. Kitty’s Great West End & Railroad Square Regatta. The temperatures blazed over 100 degrees, but it didn’t put a damper on the festivities. It was a wondrous medley of hand car racing, costumes, music, food , Victorian sideshows and curiosities.

Regatta Weekend

The Regatta weekend kicked off this evening with the CHOPS Teen Club Regatta Gala. The CHOPS art car was unveiled and will compete this Sunday at the Regatta. The Hubbub Club played as Gala attendees enjoyed selected works from the CHOPS summer artist series. See Photos from Gala- Press here.

This Sunday, Dr. Erasmus P. Kitty’s Great West End & Railroad Square Hand-Car Regatta will take over in the historic heart of Santa Rosa. Hand-Built Railcar Races!
