It was an awesome West End Spring Meeting. Over 50 neighbors and friends came out to hear the latest news, discuss recent issues and to meet up with other neighbors. We heard how we can work as a collective team to fight crime in the neighborhood. We also had our newest neighbor attend (see photo  below).

Our newest West Ender was at the meeting

For those of you who did not attend, Jennifer Watson has prepared this brief recap of our featured speakers.

Sergeant Rich Celli and his colleague Officer Dan Marincik attended the neighborhood meeting last week to speak about the recent drug-related arrests and to commend the neighborhood on our involvement.  Sgt. Celli and Officer Marincik want to encourage neighbors to continue to call to report suspicious activity, people or vehicles.   Remember that this is our neighborhood, not the drug dealers.  Let’s work together with the Police so this crew gets the message that selling drugs is not OK in our neighborhood! Here is how you can help…

Non-Emergency Dispatch, 528-5222 – To report suspicious people, vehicles or activity.  Remember that any description you have can really help (gender, race, approx height, weight, clothing, car color, address, etc.)

Graffiti Hotline, 543-3499 – To report graffiti.  There has been a spike in graffiti around the city and in our neighborhood.  There is once again a member of SR Police actively responding to reports called into the Graffiti Hotline.  If you see graffiti ‘in progress’, please call Non-Emergency Dispatch.

We are extremely fortunate to have the Downtown Enforcement Team covering our neighborhood. If you are aware of an emerging or existing pattern of issues report to Non-Emergency Dispatch (available 24/7) first and then follow up with Sergeant Celli or Officer Dan Marincik (Not on call 24/7, they will respond when they are able.)

Sergeant Rich Celli, 543-3639, rcelli@srcity.org – Sergeant Celli is in charge of the ‘Downtown Enforcement Team’ and Beat 9 (he also handles Traffic.)  He works on the ‘big picture’ and is also out on the streets of our neighborhood.

Officer Dan Marincik, 543-3600 ext 3879, dmarincik@srcity.org –Officer Marincik is part of the ‘Downtown Enforcement Team’ and his active patrol area includes our neighborhood.

For more information about the March 12th arrests on Lincoln & Ripley Streets, read the press release from Sgt. Richard Celli and view the Press Democrat article

The West End Kid’s Halloween Parade was a wonderful event. Friends and neighbors met to show off their outfits and to parade around the neighborhood and then everyone was off for trick and treating. Lots of West End houses were decked out for the enjoyment of little goblins.  Neighbor William Basie Daye III, a professional D. J., inspired us with music and a light show and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club wowed everyone with their spectacular human powered vehicles. Special thanks to Will Smith- who came up with the idea, Jacquie Smith for organizing the event and Gladis Calderson who took video in hand to record the event.  Good old fashioned neighborhood fun! If you missed it… here’s the VIDEO.

May 14th, Saturday-  Help us green 10th Street (Upper West End). 2 events on the Corner of 10th & Ripley

Whole House Energy Assessment 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.  at 103 10th Street

Front Yard Renovation  1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at 125 10th Street

Whole House Energy Assessment There will be a demonstration of a Whole House Energy Assessment that shows how to gather the information to make a priority list of improvements to improve energy efficiency.  The Goal being to improve the health and safety of your home and along with that save some money over the long term.  We all think of new windows to fix our problems in reality sometimes simple measures like caulking can improve our house significantly for a little money and time.

Front Yard Renovation Friends and neighbors are coming together to help each other with a Front Yard Renovation on 10th Street.  You are welcome to stop by 1:00 – 4:00 pm at 125 10th Street.  Donate some muscle or just say hi.  We’ll have refreshments to keep you cool. The project includes clearing weeds (mostly weed-whacked the day before), laying shade cloth and cardboard, placing plants, and covering the whole thing with mulch. Volunteers can bring gloves and shovels (pointy or flat) and/or cardboard.

What is this all about? 10th Street denizen Jessica Hetherington was inspired to find a local West End project for the 350 Home & Garden Challenge (sponsored by iGrow Sonoma and Daily Acts).  Have you seen Jessica’s yard blooming at 10th and Ripley?  We all know it’s hard to tame Bermuda grass (is that possible?) and sometimes things can get so out of control it’s just plain overwhelming.  The goal of this project is to help our neighbors on the path to having an easier to care for and sustainable yard/garden.  Jessica has worked through the 350 Home & Garden Challenge to find donations of mulch and plants –thank you Jessica!

We hope to see you on Saturday!!  Contact Jennifer Watson if you have any questions: watson_jennifer@yahoo.com.

This is a report from Jennifer Watson, the West End’s Neighborhood Watch coordinator in the Upper West End (North of 9th Street).  Jennifer has done an exceptional job of organizing and communicating crime reports. As neighbors, we all need to work together to be pro-active to criminal activity.  Today’s Alert:

Hi Neighbors.  Two abandoned vehicles were noticed and called-in to the SR Police Dept today (one from 10th St and one from Ripley St).  It turned out that both were reported as stolen. They were both removed (one was recovered by the owners –a bit of good news!).

If you notice a vehicle that has not moved for more than 72 hours or one that looks stolen (missing wheels, broken windows, etc), please CALL the SR Police Dept.  Let’s not let our neighborhood become a dumping ground for stolen vehicles.

To report an abandoned vehicle (no movement for 72 hours and a car you do not recognize):  Call 543-3600, press 1, and then 1 again to report a non-emergency that requires police response.  You will want a description of vehicle and the plate number. They will run the plates immediately and determine if it is stolen.  If it’s not stolen the car will be ‘noticed’ and eventually removed.  If it’s stolen SR Police will be out ASAP to recover the vehicle.

To report a stolen vehicle (car with missing wheels, broken glass, you get the idea): Call 528-5222 and you will reach non-emergency dispatch.  Provide description and plate numbers.

Hope you will all be able to attend the neighborhood meeting on Thurs, March 17, 7:00 pm at the ROUND BARN!      Best,   Jennifer 121 10th Street

This is a report from Jennifer Watson, the West End’s Neighborhood Watch coordinator in the Upper West End (North of 9th Street).  Jennifer Watson has done an exceptional job of organizing and communicating crime reports. As neighbors, we all need to work together to be pro-active to criminal activity.  Today’s Alert:

CRIME ALERT – CAR ROBBERY – Upper West End area (North of 9th)

Hi Neighbors,

Neighbor Russ Toran reports: “At 6:08 am this morning (Wed, 12/15) my car was broken into at 932 Ripley St (at the end of 11th Street.) The Sony AM/FM compact disk player was taken.  My car was locked because the alarm went off, however, there was no sign visible sign of forced entry like a broken window. They must have used those devices AAA uses when you lock your keys in the car. They went through the glovebox and the trunk. Too bad the downtown area of Santa Rosa is like this. This is the second time my car has been broken into to in the the past two years.”

If you see or hear suspicious activity in the neighborhood: Call the Police. Non-emergency 528-5222 and Emergency 911 (on Cell phones- call 528-5222 for both). Also call (or email) your neighbors to report situations or to get backup.    Let’s keep communicating to keep our neighborhood safer!

Sincerely,   Jennifer Watson, 121 10th Street, 568-3735

Train Cars on SMART site- They have been a part of this area for so long that many of us don’t even notice them anymore.  A few of us have actually been inside them to see the beautiful rehab job- a labor of love of owner, Wes Vail. We had always hoped that one day they would have a permanent home in Railroad Square but that just didn’t happen. By the end of this month, the train cars will go to their new home, a train museum somewhere in the Eureka area.

The train cars will leave Railroad Square
