May 20th, Friday- West End Summer Bocce opens. It’s HERE! West End Summer Bocce starts THIS Friday. Starting May 20th you can count on Bocce  EVERY Friday night in the Summer in beautiful DeMeo Park. Meet your neighbors and friends for a few hours of chatting, snacking and, of course, bocce. Location: DeMeo Park (Corner of W. 7th and Polk Street) Time: 6:30 p.m.

May 21st, Saturday-  117th Annual Luther Burbank Rose Parade. This is one of Sonoma County’s most honored traditions and one of the oldest and largest events of its kind in Northern California. Parade starts at 10 a.m. REMEMBER! You can ride with Whiskey Drunk cycles ( see Critical Corn Facebook invite) or So. Co. May 22nd, Sunday Children’s talent show We have a few local kiddos (and need more) that want to show off their talents. Allen and Lea have graciously offered to host the kid’s talent show on Sunday, May 22 about 3pm. It will be a small “low key” talent show. Remember, low key and fun is the idea. Kids can sing, play the kazoo, lip sync, recite a poem, perform magic tricks, tell jokes, act in a skit with other kids, juggle or display tricks they’ve taught the dog.

May 23rd Monday- Bike in Movie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. So Co. Bicycle Coalitions Annual Bike-In Movie. The event features free, secure valet bike parking! Snacks and beverages available for purchase. Admission is $5 – $15 sliding scale.  The event will include raffle drawings and E.T. Trivia! Note: please remember to bring your bike lights, and remember that children under 18 are required by law to wear bike helmets when riding. December 9th, Thursday- Xmas Card Collective Show & Sale. Don’t buy your Christmas cards until you see the original works created by 6 local artists including West End’s William Smith, Jacqueline Smith and  Todd Barricklow (accepted as a West Ender but actually from another interesting neighborhood)  Location: Studio 300  at 300 South A Street Time: 5-8 p.m.

Amber Lee Baker in Alpha . Click Here! Amber is “Dominating” the local music scene. Her second Album  “Indelible” is in the works and includes 8 well crafted songs, including “Alpha” .  There is a Kickstarter Fundraiser to help fund this fabulous album. It’s a fun way for to pre-buy the album and get some great extras. The more you pledge, the more you get…. a private house concert for you and 10 friends, accordion lessons, T-shirts and more. Congrats to Ken Risling! His song won the November Best Song (beating out 12 others) at the Songwriter’s competition with this his Awesome song ,”Shameless Love”. He performed the song with his daughter, Oona Risling-Sholl. Check out “Shameless Love”- Click here!

Actor/Director Workshops: Hello from your filmmaker neighbor on Davis St…. I’m putting out the word that I’m NOW LOOKING FOR ACTORS interested in collaborating on some skill-building exercises, staging and shooting short scenes. Minimal commitment of time and effort. Here’s the latest update from Kevin Teel, TLCD Architecture. The DeTurk Round Barn project began in April and the projected complete date is sometime in October. The completion date is subject to change due to a variety of circumstances.

Dog Park- Now open. Three new benches have been installed- will be retrofitted with mid-armrest.  Round Barn- A) 3rd concrete pour in barn B) Finish Rough Plumbing C) Finish Rough Electrical D) Preliminary site grading/fire line E) New Roof/Skylight installation F) Continued Wood framing inside barn. Off-Site Improvements- Curb/Gutter and side walk work commences 8-18-10. (at Donahue and W. 8th)

Kid Street Learning Center- On Monday, a school group from Kid Street Learning Center, toured the West End. Executive Director and Principal, Linda Conklin said it was an outing to let the kids become familiar with the neighborhood. Along the way, they stopped at the dog park and met a few West End Dogs.  Kid Street Learning Center, located in the Old Lincoln School, is a nonprofit charter school. West End Summer Bocce- Every Friday at 6 p.m. at DeMeo Park. Join your friends and neighbors at beautiful DeMeo Park. Bring food to share- this is part of the experience.   Bocce is an all age, dog friendly event. To keep the event enjoyable and comfortable for all- please remember to observe Park rules: No glass, dogs on leashes. The West End Neighborhood Association has procured a Special Alcohol Permit and Lavatory for West End Summer Bocce. Wear layers for chilly nights (We are not kidding).

West End Movie Night at DeMeo Park- Join your neighbors this Friday night 8/13/2010 at  ~9:00 pm (when it’s dark enough) to watch the movie E.T. in DeMeo Park. Your kids may love it as much as you do!  (Movie details here and parental advisory here ) Bring a blanket & such to sit on and keep warm with.  We’ll have free popcorn to share.

Sunday, August 15th 10 a.m.- Pug Play Day at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park. Masses of adorable Pugs congregate once a month at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park. Even if you don’t have a dog- the masses of socializing Pugs are are very amusing to watch. So stop on by! Of course, other friendly breeds are welcomed to attend. The West End Neighborhood is “home” to many resident artists- from songwriters to musicians to artists in various mediums. One of the best benefits of living here is the opportunity to appreciate the skill, inventiveness and the gifts of our own neighborhood community. Put these dates on your calendar!

August 4th, Wednesday 6 p.m.- West End songwriter Ken Risling has qualified for the Petaluma West Coast Songwriters Playoff which will be at the Mystic Theater, Petaluma. Ken will perform one of his songs, accompanied by his very talented daughter, Oona Risling-Sholl. Joining him will be nine other talented songwriters as they all vie for “Best Song of the Year” recognition. Mystic Theater, Petaluma

August 5th, Thursday 7:30 p.m.- D. G. Sculpture Studio and Gallery invites you to attend a musical celebration with visionary musician Manfred Bleffert. This artist has has dedicated his life to developing new music. Although his compositions come out of the stream of 20th century new music, his studies have encompassed music from all cultures and times. D. G. August 20th, Friday 9:30 p.m.- Amber Lee and the Anomalies will perform at Toad in the Hole. Amber Lee is an accordion-ista and singer-songwriter and has recently finished a European tour. Fans can also see Amber on August 21st at the Cotati Accordion Festival

August 21st, Saturday 4-6 p.m. – Artist Reception for West End Artist- William Smith’s show “One Across the Bow”. Join your friends, neighbors and enthusiastic art fans at The Quicksilver Mine Co. If you missed the Gong Show on Sunday night, you missed some great entertainment. There was a lot of surprising talent from West End performers. Who knew? This was another excellent event produced by West End resident Kelly Cowan, assisted by Melissa Garcia Cowan and Jacqueline Smith. The magnificent set design was by Will Smith.
