The West End Neighborhood is “home” to many resident artists- from songwriters to musicians to artists in various mediums. One of the best benefits of living here is the opportunity to appreciate the skill, inventiveness and the gifts of our own neighborhood community. Put these dates on your calendar!

August 4th, Wednesday 6 p.m.- West End songwriter Ken Risling has qualified for the Petaluma West Coast Songwriters Playoff which will be at the Mystic Theater, Petaluma. Ken will perform one of his songs, accompanied by his very talented daughter, Oona Risling-Sholl. Joining him will be nine other talented songwriters as they all vie for “Best Song of the Year” recognition. Mystic Theater, Petaluma

August 5th, Thursday 7:30 p.m.- D. G. Sculpture Studio and Gallery invites you to attend a musical celebration with visionary musician Manfred Bleffert. This artist has has dedicated his life to developing new music. Although his compositions come out of the stream of 20th century new music, his studies have encompassed music from all cultures and times. D. G. August 20th, Friday 9:30 p.m.- Amber Lee and the Anomalies will perform at Toad in the Hole. Amber Lee is an accordion-ista and singer-songwriter and has recently finished a European tour. Fans can also see Amber on August 21st at the Cotati Accordion Festival

August 21st, Saturday 4-6 p.m. – Artist Reception for West End Artist- William Smith’s show “One Across the Bow”. Join your friends, neighbors and enthusiastic art fans at The Quicksilver Mine Co. August 27th, Friday 8:30 p.m.- West Enders Ken Risling and Avery Risling-Sholl will be back at Aroma Roasters. By popular demand, they will be performing their mix of traditional Celtic and American, featuring Avery’s vocals and fiddle and Ken’s award winning original songs. Aroma Roasters

August 28th, Saturday 8 p.m.- The Blasters . This band has won the hearts and souls of fans worldwide for over three decades. Lunatics, Buckets and Dogs- Good times

If you want to get a little crazy, this is a good week to do it. Lots of opportunities to see local West End performing artists- and the biggest event actually requires a straight jacket (or perhaps a bathrobe and medication).

July 27th, Tuesday night. Toad in the Hole’s 3 year anniversary Party. The Deluxe Buckets will bust out some good ol’fashioned swampabilly- zombitandem-tacotruckin-goodtime tunes. Plus, the troublemakers will be haulin’ out the big contraptions for the summer fun of it and because the Toad has always been ready with beer and support for The Builders. August 1, Sunday 5- 7 p.m. Baby Seal Club at Live at Julliard Park – 17th Annual 2010 Summer Concert Series . Extend the weekend, come and enjoy a picnic dinner on a summer Sunday evening filled with music, fun and food. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and sit back and enjoy the entertainment. Bring your picnic dinner or purchase it from Worth Our Weight Culinary program or purchase a delicious coffee drink from The Coffee Girls. All performances are free.

The West End is a busy place- there’s always lots to do. Here’s a run down of recent events:

The West End to Hopmonk Full Moon ride was a great success -with over 20 riders enjoying the lovely weather. The group met at DeMeo Park and then rode to the Hopmonk via the Joe Rodota trail. After a bit of socializing and sustenance (aka beverage and munchies), the group rode back under a full moon back to West End. Some folks continued onto Railroad Square, ultimately ending up at Starks for a debriefing. See the ride video- Click here! For more photos Click Here!

Leadership Institute for Ecology and Economy had their June Fellows Happy Hour at DeMeo park- The Leadership Institute, dedicated to ensuring a sustainable future, trains people to be more effective leaders and to educate community leaders and the public to understand that the future of our economy and quality of life are dependent on each other. The Fellows of the Institute were introduced to the West End- a downtown neighborhood with small, efficient homes easily accessible to local businesses. The event was sponsored by Thomas & Co. Consulting, Allen Thomas is a 2003 graduate of the institute. They were also treated to beer brewed by the West End’s Dave Drake, yummy appetizers made by Andrew Zarrillow and Burning Hawk Wines poured by Nick Papadopoulos and Scott Johnson. 303 Hewett Street- Wow! Check out the rehabilitation of the historic cottage located at 303 Hewett Street. This 19th Century Vernacular Box house, built before 1904, had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was sold- and the new owner has brought it back to life. Great care and attention to historically correct detail were made by the project manager- “My Handyman” John Moorhead (236-2577). This is a living example of the benefit of living in a historic district. This house would not look the same if it was repaired with T111 siding! (Note: the vinyl windows were added before the rehab)

Our neighbors in Railroad Square have their new clock and it’s a beauty. It was installed on Friday, June 25th. There will be an official dedication on August 6th.

Wednesday April 28th at 8 p.m.- Songwriter Showcase: Rob Heath, Ken Risling ( West End artist) and Mike Ehlers. An evening of great acoustic, original music from seasoned songcrafters. The “songwriters in the round” format will keep all three artists on the stage in rotation, trading songs and stories. Ken Risling’s songs, ranging in genre from folk, country, 50’s blues, swing to modern rock, have won numerous awards. With a warm manner and inviting voice, he is perhaps best known for delivering heartfelt tales. Location: Hopmonk Tavern 230 Petaluma Ave, Sebastopol.

Friday April 30th at 4:30 p.m.- Chops Teen Club Variety Showcase. The evening will showcase Chop’s teen member’s accomplishments in music, dance, fashion, art, martial arts and more. Appetizers will be served by the Chop’s Teen Catering Crew. Performances will take place from 5:00- 6:16 p.m. Come for the entertainment and experience the Chop’s Teen Club mission in action. (Rain Date is May 8th). $5 donation if you would like to participate- this covers costs of ads, signs that will be put up (and taken down) on the day of sale. May 2nd at 3 p.m.- San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers return to Santa Rosa, a major focus of the bay area’s fiddle world. The Bocce Cleanup was a wonderful warm up to the season. Neighbors worked, socialized and ate bake goods from the West End Charter School bake sale. Opening night for Bocce is Friday May 14th. West End Neighborhood Yard sale this Saturday May 1st. (rain date May 8th).

Monday April 26th 6 p.m.- Museum on the Square public meeting. The proposed project will adapt and reuse 520 Third St. (aka AT&T building) for cultural, commercial and residential.
