The Vintage Rose garden is the creation of West End residents. In 1999, Lea Barron-Thomas applied for a Schulz Neighborhood grant to develop a vintage rose garden and a community bulletin board in the new DeTurk Round Barn Park. Gina Stateler- Calhoun, famous in the West End for her garden, researched and designed the garden.  Most of the roses are dated prior to the 1930s which keeps with our neighborhood’s historic designation. In 2000, the roses were planted by neighbors. In the last 10 years, the garden has flourished under Gina’s care and attention.

With the current construction project, the rose garden has been removed and will be stored until they can be placed in the new garden. Most of the roses from the original garden were retained. A few of the roses were just too big, not suitable or too sickly for the new garden. The garden will be replanted, perhaps toward the end of summer. Email Gina Stateler-Calhoun for more info ginasquilt@hotmail.com She could also use donations of 1 , 2 and 5 gallon plant containers.

Lots to do this weekend- but don’t forget the West End Bocce Court cleanup!

April 24th, Saturday at 11 a.m.- Bocce Court Clean up at DeMeo Park. A yearly tradition, spruce up the courts for the West End Summer Bocce Season. Bring tools, gloves and don’t forget the sunblock.  Plan to have a snack because the West End Charter School will hold a bake sale at the clean up.

Do you have plant containers to spare? The roses at the DeTurk Park Vintage Rose Garden will be removed and stored early next week. Gina will have lots of rescued plants to give to neighbors soon. She is requesting donations of 1 gallon, a few 5 gallon and she especially would like 2 gallons plant containers. If you have some to spare, drop them off at her house at 114 W. 8th. (It’s a house with a gorgeous garden, of course!)

Dan Wright & Gina prepared the roses for removal today.
