October 7th, Friday- First Friday Night Sky Program. First Friday Night Sky programs are offered September 2011 to  May 2012.  Learn interesting facts in or about the sky that night. Free but donations to support SRJC’s Planetarium are gratefully appreciated. Seating on a first-come, first-served basis; so arrive early enough to pick up your free parking permit, return it to your vehicle, and arrive back at planetarium by show start. October 15th, Saturday: The Tweed Ride- in honor of bike commuter Luther Burbank. Don your wooly knickers for a leisurely 16-mile along the Joe Rodota Trail to Burbank’s Gold Ridge Farm in Sebastopol (and back). The So. Co. museum’s Eric Stanley’s stories and facts will help you imagine how the route looked when Burbank rode it.  Bring: Helmet, water, snacks, clothing layers in case of a inclement wheather. Helmets required for under 18 yrs. and recommended for riders of all ages and require all riders to sign a liability waiver. October 29th, Saturday- Cultural History Hike at Tolay Lake Regional Park with Pomo Elder Nick Tipon. Nick Tipon, Pomo Tribal elder, is from the Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria and he grew up in the West End. Join Nick and a So. Co. Parks Ranger on a guided hike to the east ridge of Tolay Lake Regional Park. Learn about this incredible property and its history. A 30-minute presentation in the Stone Floor barn will cover cultural resources of the Tribe, their connections to the land and more. Fantastic October events!

October 1st, Saturday- First Saturday Cleanup West Ender Stan Gow organizes this monthly cleanup so we can take care of the Santa Rosa Creek.  Enjoy pizza afterward. Please bring utensils to keep trash impact low. Contribution to lunch, desserts, fruit and appetizers are always welcome. Location: Olive Park, Santa Rosa Time: 10 a.m. First Saturday Cleanup

October 1st, Saturday- Levi’s GranFondo.This year 7,500 participants from all over the world (and many locals!) will ride the beautiful roads of Sonoma County. This event makes alot of money for worthy causes. NOTE: Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. the north side of the Prince Memorial Greenway creek path between Willowside Rd. & Stony Point Rd. will be heavily traveled by eastbound GranFondo cycling traffic .  Road Closures. Non-participants can enjoy the  FondoSonoma Festival 10am – 6pm at the Finley Center. Best source for GranFondo and supporting events is at their website- click here!

Halloween and the start of the World Series are the exciting events to focus on during the last week of October. Clearly the weather is changing- Railroad Scare was rained out… let’s hope the weather will hold for this weekend.

Current forecast for Sunday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 66.  Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 50.

October 30th, Saturday- Halloween Carnival at CHOPS. A family friendly, evening of safe and ghoulish fun. Trick or treating, a jumpy house, game booths, face painting, costume contest and more! Carnival booths and activities geared for elementary age levels and younger. The West End Full Moon Tour provided another enchanting look into our neighborhood’s past. The weather cooperated so that walking throughout the neighborhood was comfortable. The West End Full Moon Tour will start at 6:15 at Depot Park and finish at Stark’s by 9:00. We will spend more time inside and less time outside if it’s raining hard. Park on W. 6th for easy access to the start and finish of the tour. We will hear stories from the past, a few of them tragic and then cheer up at the bakery with warm bread and enjoy the Fondettes while sitting by a fire with a cocktails at Stark’s. What’s not to like? Everyone who has paid for tickets on Brown Paper Tickets -Thanks. This time of the year gives us the opportunity to enjoy Halloween, Fall & harvest. Yearly favorites are Railroad Scare and the West End Full Moon tour- two of the best ways to celebrate this season. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan is still winding its way through the boards and commissions- don’t complain later if you don’t take the time to comment now. Last Day Saloon will have a benefit concert for Sadie’s Haven- a non-profit that provides care and shelter for neglected, abused and abandoned horses.

October 21st, Thursday- Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Board- Board will review the draft of the 2010 Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan Update. This is one of the final opportunities to make your comments of this draft. Location: 90 Santa Rosa Ave. City Hall Annex Building,  Conference Room 7A & B. Time: 4- 6 p.m.

West End neighbor, Tim Sarter plays bass and acts in the new show, Hank Williams: Lost Highway. If you haven’t had a chance to see a show at the 6th Street Playhouse, this would be an excellent time to do so!

Christmas Tree Collection Christmas trees are recycled into mulch and compost. Please take advantage of one of the three convenient recycling methods available to you.Place your unflocked tree in your yard waste container and place on the curb on your regular yard waste collection day. The tree must be CUT TO FIT inside the container (4 foot or less sections, please). Trees sticking out of the container can interfere with the lifting arm on the truck. Please remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments, and stands. For more info Click here!
