 It is the beginning of May- time to start the outdoor event season. West End Bocce begins on May 18th. It’s also time to get into your gardens- Luther Burbank Home & Gardens has a plant sale on May 6th.  May 9th- 13th is all about the AMGEN Tour of CA and supporting events. Want to go outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather? If you have been to DeMeo Park or down the Prince Memorial Greenway you may have noticed that both of them need a little bit of work. You can help make a difference- we have a DeMeo Park cleanup scheduled on April 14th, Saturday and as always First Saturday Cleanup will meet tomorrow (the first Saturday- April 7th) to clean up the Prince Memorial Greenway. Join in with your neighbors and help us clean up!

April 14th, Saturday-  DeMeo Park Clean up. Time for Spring Cleaning! The West End Neighborhood and Chop’s Interact Club will join forces to tidy up DeMeo Park. We plan to trim the bushes, spread bark, weed and groom the bocce court. We will then celebrate our clean park with a BBQ. Please bring your gardening tools (remember to mark them for easy identification), gloves and energy. Everyone is welcome. Hope to see you there! DeMeo Park and DeTurk Round Barn Park both have new recycling bins. These  bins are from Conservation Corps North Bay. This nonprofit helps at risk youth (ages 18-28) get their lives back on track with a year’s worth of job training and work experience along with an education to get a GED and High School Diploma. Prince Gateway Park & Greenway is a Community Treasure

Recently, this treasured park and greenway has been the site of extensive graffiti and vandalism.  This has been met with shock, dismay, and anger by the community.  The extent of the damage is taking some time and expense to clean up and repair, but it is underway.  ArtStart students have stepped up to begin repairs of tile work on the salmon statue and are working on plans to replace the dragon mural in a more durable form and also refurbish benches; City crews and a contractor are working to clean the area of debris and blast graffiti markings from the stone and cement work; police and fire are stepping up patrols and interventions to seek places for transient campers to find better shelter than the public park and nab the vandals.  Unfortunately, due to the extent of the damage the city does not have sufficient funds to completely restore all of the fixtures right away and may need to re-think the design to select items that are more tamper-proof.  Lighting fixtures have been torn apart and stripped of metal materials.  This gateway park and trail serves as a welcoming place for neighbors and visitors alike and we want to make sure it is a safe and beautiful place to enjoy.  We do need help from the community to be our “eyes, ears, and, on occasion, elbow-grease” to keep it clean, green, and safe.  We continue to seek volunteer groups to adopt segments of our public trails to do just that.  Interested?  To sign up, contact the City at

Graffiti Abatement Gets Help

Graffiti is blight on our neighborhoods and is most effectively controlled if removed immediately.  If it appears on your property, clean it up now.  If it appears in public areas, contact the City to find ways to remove it.  While City park crews have just one employee working everyday to remove graffiti from public parks and trails throughout the community, the police department works on graffiti abatement as a property crime and seeks partnerships with neighborhoods to rid the community of such unsightly and harmful vandalism.  The abatement program will be staffed temporarily with a Field and Evidence Technician who started work this week to maintain the good work and continuity of the program.  Volunteers are engaging in graffiti abatement and the program is up and running as it has for several years.  The department will be hiring full time staff for the graffiti abatement program once some internal reorganization of jobs is completed and that hire should be made by early summer.  If you discover graffiti problems in your neighborhood or wish to get involved with this community partnership please contact the Graffiti Hotline at 543-3499 or http://ci.santa-rosa.ca.us/departments/police/aboutus/special_services/Pages/graffiti_abatement.aspx

Spring Meeting Recap

It was an awesome West End Spring Meeting. Over 50 neighbors and friends came out to hear the latest news, discuss recent issues and to meet up with other neighbors. We heard how we can work as a collective team to fight crime in the neighborhood. We also had our newest neighbor attend (see photo  below).

 For those of you who did not attend, Jennifer Watson has prepared this brief recap of our featured speakers.

Sergeant Rich Celli and his colleague Officer Dan Marincik attended the neighborhood meeting last week to speak about the recent drug-related arrests and to commend the neighborhood on our involvement.  Sgt. Celli and Officer Marincik want to encourage neighbors to continue to call to report suspicious activity, people or vehicles.   Remember that this is our neighborhood, not the drug dealers.  Let’s work together with the Police so this crew gets the message that selling drugs is not OK in our neighborhood! Here is how you can help…

Non-Emergency Dispatch, 528-5222 – To report suspicious people, vehicles or activity.  Remember that any description you have can really help (gender, race, approx height, weight, clothing, car color, address, etc.)

Graffiti Hotline, 543-3499 – To report graffiti.  There has been a spike in graffiti around the city and in our neighborhood.  There is once again a member of SR Police actively responding to reports called into the Graffiti Hotline.  If you see graffiti ‘in progress’, please call Non-Emergency Dispatch.

We are extremely fortunate to have the Downtown Enforcement Team covering our neighborhood. If you are aware of an emerging or existing pattern of issues report to Non-Emergency Dispatch (available 24/7) first and then follow up with Sergeant Celli or Officer Dan Marincik (Not on call 24/7, they will respond when they are able.)

Description: Issues submitted with this application go directly into the issue tracking system in Santa Rosa, CA. This ensures the fasted response as your issue is automatically routed to the appropriate employee to handle your issue. Please report issues as you see them so we can make Santa Rosa, CA an even better place to live and work.
Crime Alert: Somebody broke into a Carport storage area on the 200 block of W. 6th Street. Locks were cut- mostly tools stolen. This happened on 3/16, Friday sometime after 11:45 p.m. A police report was filed.

For over 35 years, many citizens have felt that downtown Santa Rosa has been divided by monolith called the Santa Rosa Plaza. Recently, the mall owner/manager Simon Property Group (aka the largest real estate company in the U.S.) while going through the City’s Design review process completely refuses to improve the situation in anyway. Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board – The S. R. City Council is seeking applications from interested citizens to fill one at-large position representing the Senior Community on the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board. BPAB provides City staff with input on the type of pedestrian and bicycle transportation projects that should be considered for commuting and what priority those projects should have.   Board meets on the third Thursday of every month from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the City Hall Annex, 90 Santa Rosa Avenue. First Saturday Clean Up a Success-  fifty volunteers turned out on the  March 3, 2012, First Saturday clean up on Santa Rosa Creek along the Prince Memorial Greenway. The creek and Olive Park look a lot better after the efforts of neighbors along with youth and parents of Santa Rosa Mothers Club, Rincon Valley Middle School, Willowside Middle School, Boy Scout Troop 509, Club Scout Pack 20, Cub Scout Pack 58, American Heritage Girls Troop 58 and Club Scout Pack 134.Remember the next “First Saturday clean ups” are on April 7th and May 5th. West End Pet Friendly- February

Animal friendly West End is located downtown Santa Rosa, close to dog friendly stores, cafes and even restaurants.  Animal amenities abound: 3 doggie parties at our dog park; a Feral cat colony managed and fed by a West Ender. Right in the ‘hood we have Western Farm Center,  well respected veterinarian and West Ender Deborah Crippen and even Group Dog lessons.
Animal events you might be interested in:  Summer Camp with the animals (SIGN UP FAST! They fill up!), Read to a Dog and is there such a thing as a Cat Agility contest? Fraid so! This weekend see cats perform amazing feats and then, sometimes, not.

West End Feral Cat Update- Correction: The West Ends total current current number of cats are 25 (not 13). They have all been fixed and given shots by Forgotten Felines. They are fed on a daily basis, with two feeding stations, by West Ender Charly Thomas. Fixing, immunizing and feeding feral cats allow these cats to live out their lives in health without breeding more cats. Cat Food donations accepted. Diamond Brand cat food is a quality food available at Western Farm at a reasonable price. Drop your bags off at 124 W. 6th. Thanks to Charly and Forgotten Felines.

Dog Story Hour- Did you know that children of all ages are invited to read to a dog or tell a dog a story at many of our So. Co. Libraries? It’s a great way to pique the interest in a trip to the library. It’s also a handy way to get a “dog fix” if you don’t have one of your own. The Central Library holds their “Read to a Winter Dog” on Saturdays from 11-12. The Rincon Valley branch holds their “Read to a Dog” hour on Thursdays and Saturdays. Summer Day Camps at the Humane Society Animal Adventure, Education Camps and Career Camps are  held in the summer. Train a dog, hug a bunny, feed a cat, pet a reptile and learn and discover why animals are such an important part of our lives. Discover a career in dog training or animal control officers by speaking to professionals and learn how to prepare your own pets in case of a disaster. Field trips may include: Assistance Dog Institute, Bodega Bay Marine Lab, Wildlife Rescue and much, much more. Each session is one week (M-F) from 9:00AM – 3:00PM. Sessions are categorized by grade level (for grades 2- 12- grade starting in the fall 2012 school year) with the first session beginning in June and the last session ending in August. February 11th, Saturday- Ken Risling and Avery Risling-Sholl  Singer songwriter Ken Risling and traditional musician Avery Risling-Sholl (in his first feature performance since his return from Scotland) will play the night away with original songs and music from the Appalachians to banks of Aberdeen. Duets and solos, you will be serenaded by voice, guitar and fiddle while you sip your drink and eat your treats at the wonderful warm atmosphere of the coffee house on railroad square. Another West End house finds a miracle ….

The West End neighborhood has a way of grabbing the creative, hopeful heart.  Owners willing to commit the required time, money and love required to repair and restore our humble houses are a gift to the whole neighborhood. Corner houses have a big impact on the whole block and we are happy to report that another West End House has been smiled upon…..

The Maria Groff house, on the corner of Madison and W. 7th, has been empty and lost for several years. At one time, it had high hopes when a past owner had plans to move the Hoag House on the double lot- but that never happened. It has been neglected, empty and deserted.

Today the home has a new owner who has plans to bring life to the little cottage on a key corner of the neighborhood. As a homage to the BEAUTIFUL Valley Oak tree in the yard, the new owner calls it, “The Acorn”. The original historic house, that is quite tiny, will be preserved while an ample addition will make it roomy enough for a lifetime neighbor.

A new foundation

Last Monday, the original house was securely placed on its new foundation, while the new addition’s foundation is also in place. Keep an eye out … because it is quickly transforming. This little house will be a proud abode and it promises to be creative, musical and amazing.

All of our houses are important, but when a corner house is rehabbed… it can make a remarkable impression. Can you remember the “before & after” of the properties located at W. 8th and Donahue? NW corner of Hewett and Madison? NW corner of Hewitt and Trowbridge? They are recent examples of homes that were fortunate enough to have new owners that were willing to rehab, restore and thereby favor the whole West End Neighborhood with their renovation.
