The Save our Pools 5k race will, once again, run a path through the West End. The race starts at 8 a.m.- so watch for racers to course through the West End sometime after that. Sit on your porch, drink your coffee and ring your cowbells for the racers- unless, of course, you plan to race! Also… only 4 more Bocce nights. Last date is September 16th.

Running by DeTurk Round Barn:

August  28th, Saturday- The Santa Rosa Marathon and 5K SAVE OUR POOLS Charity Race. The 5K will loop through the West End… so get your cowbells out to cheer on the runners!  ( 5 K race map) The Marathon is a double 13.1 mile loop that starts in Juilliard Park in downtown Santa Rosa.  The half Marathon starts at the same location and completes one loop.  It is a flat, fast Boston Qualified course that loops the entire scenic Prince Memorial Greenway. The 5 K race will raise funds to help support Chops Teen Center’s  unique workforce job placement program  and to help “Save the (Finley and Ridgeway) Pools. A portion of the Marathon will benefit the Sonoma County Humane Society and Valley of the Moon Children’s Foundation. Enjoy a fun festival in Juilliard Park after the races that will include live music by local rock band WonderBread 5. For more info S. R. Marathon

August 29th, Monday- Spring Maxfield, organizer and cofounder of The Great West End & Railroad Square Handcar Regatta- will discuss the origin of this event and trace the event’s growth to become one of the country’s most popular fall activities. Now in its fourth year, the Regatta is billed as a “splendid celebration of art, science and ingenuity” which is a “spectacle for both young and old.  Open to the public and free. So much to do- and all of it close by! It’s the peak of Summer- enjoy the weather and all the delightful events offered in Downtown. As always- you can join your friends and neighbors EVERY Friday at DeMeo Park for West End Bocce and you can “Wine Down” every Thursday at D’Argenzio Winery.

July 27th- August 14th- Sonoma County Fair. Good Ol’ fashioned fun. This year is the 75th anniversary- so opening day has a special procession starting at Wednesday Night Market and ending at the fair. Participants will receive free admission. There’s also free red, white and blue hats to create a living flag out of fairgoers. Fireworks too! Great local music choices: Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs, The Fondettes, Mad Maggies, Shannon Rider, The Don Giovannis and more. The DeTurk Round Barn’s long awaited transformation is a great success. Not only was an incredible historic building rehabbed and preserved but also a venue for very special, unique events was created. Many of you attended the Grand Opening in March. Since then, the Barn has been the site for a handful of weddings and events.  We also hold the West End Neighborhood Association meetings at the barn (very fitting that we meet there!) There will be another kind of event,  a Bridal Fashion Show and ArtStart benefit held this June. See below for details.

The weather is finally warming up… and as always there is a variety of events and happenings to choose from. West Enders can enjoy Bocce at DeMeo Park every Friday night. We also are usually within walking or biking distance to the best events in Santa Rosa.  Take advantage of having the Rialto Cinema right in the neighborhood- the films are unique and flavorful.

June 21st ,Tuesday- Making the Boys  “The Boys in the Band” the first-ever gay play and subsequent Hollywood movie to successfully reach a mainstream audience changed everything. Making the Boys explores the enduring legacy and controversy that endures to this day “The Boys in the Band”. Tickets on sale now at rialtocinemas.com. June 22, Wednesday  Help send Snoopy  as our Goodwill Ambassador. This will be the first Snoopy ever on the Korean Island, Jejudo,  Santa Rosa’s sister city. For 10 years, we have exchanged students and performers between our two cities. Jejudo has sent 3 statues over the years and this will be our first. A 30 inch bronzed Snoopy will be placed on a 36 inch pedestal that will be made in Jejudo and placed on a street named “Santa Rosa”. Help send the Snoopy Monument and taste some wine… all for  $20. June 25th, Saturday-  D’Argenzio winery and Time Traveler Tours Special Event- D’Argenzio Winery and  Time Traveler Tours are teaming up to give a  short walking tour of Railroad Square that will show guests where the Santa Rosa wine industry began. The tour will highlight old winery sites and give a history of early wine making in Santa Rosa. Wine and appetizers will served at D’Argenzio Winery after the tour.  $20 Tickets Location: Tour will meet in Railroad Square by S. R. Visitor’s Center. Time: 3- 5 p.m.

June 28th , Tuesday- Something Ventured 5 p.m. 7:30 p.m. A documentary about Silicon Valley’s first venture capitalists and the companies they helped bring to life. The film also includes some of the finest entrepreneurs sharing how they worked with these venture capitalists to grow world-class companies like Intel, Apple, Cisco, Atari, Genentech, Tandem and others. We’re ready for a summer season of events and activities, now we just need the weather to cooperate. The West End plays Bocce at DeMeo Park every Friday night at 6:30 p.m.  West End Summer Movie nights start this Friday ( “weather permitting”. Let’s cross our fingers!) There’s lots of other things to do too… take a gander and pick  your favorites.

The weather is gorgeous- get out and clean up the creek or perhaps ride your bike. Dog Park users… a special reminder to observe the park hours (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) and to keep the noise down in early morning and evening hours. This is a neighborhood park with homes nearby- be kind to our neighbors. Lastly- Buy your Regatta tickets now… we all love this event and $5 is more than worth the price of admission.

Tomorrow!! May 7th, Saturday- First Saturday. On the first Saturday of every month, you can help take care of the Santa Rosa Creek that flows right by the West End. It only takes an hour or two. After the cleanup, First Saturday volunteers will enjoy pizza at DeMeo park.  Please bring utensils so we may keep our trash impact low.
