Stolen Bike Report: I live at 216 Hewett St. I’ve been here since 1998 and never had any problems with theft, despite forgetting to close my garage many times. Unfortunately this “time of innocence” has ended. My bike was stolen from my garage sometime between Thursday the 22nd and Tuesday the 27th. The garage door was down and locked. The thief had to enter through our backyard gate and side garage door. It was my beloved Dahon folding commuter bike I ride to work everyday during the school year. It is gray and has 20” wheels. If anyone sees it around, please let me know. Cynthia McDaniel  Email

A student, who lives on Klute St. in the St. Rose neighborhood, had her car broken into on Tuesday evening, June 22nd. She’s hoping that at least her school book will be found which would be of no use to anyone else . Be on the look out.

I live on Klute street on the east side and just wanted to let you know that my car was broken into last night and my school bag stolen. It’s a Dakine backpack and unfortunately it had my wallet in it and my school book Managerial Finance. I’m hoping that maybe who ever stole the bag dumps it somewhere in the neighborhood…I really need the school book.

Thank you!!!!! Kattie kattiezimmer@GMAIL.COM

Crime Alert: There was an attempted break-in at 709 Davis Street- the Kid Street Learning Center building. It was last week around 2am. One of the neighbors heard a loud crash when they looked outside they saw 2 guys and a girl in the middle of the street. The police were called and a report was taken. They broke the window to the basement. Thankfully the windows are double pane and the 2nd portion wasn’t broke. I’m hopeful that the loud noise is what scared them off.    Sheila Accornero   Kid Street Learning Center

Rezoning and Notice of Public Hearing questions: Many folks have had questions about the Notice of Public Hearing they received from the City of Santa Rosa. The Notice, which was mailed to 2000 individuals, was a little vague so if you have questions please contact Jessica Jones.  She has been doing a terrific job explaining to people what precisely is being proposed and how it impacts their property.  Her contact info is jjones@srcity.org or 707-543-3410.

Light Reduction Program- Several neighbors have suggested that we turn on our front lights to combat the changes that the reduction of lights might bring to the neighborhood. The Neighborhood Watch Program has always suggested that light is a deterrent to crime. Porch lights can be put on timer, they can also be motion activated and, of course, there’s also solar lights.

Found Dog: We found a nice little dog today in Railroad Square. He seemed to be some kind of Corgi/Chihuahua mix. Friendly. Short and squat with a caramel coat. Was wearing a red collar. He is now at the Sonoma County Animal Care and Control hoping to be found by his owners. Drop us a line if you think he’s yours so we know he’s been reunited. From Boyce Street: I want to report that our car was burglarized on Friday night.  My wife left it unlocked and the thieves stole all the change from the ashtray, and a personal check.  They also rummaged through the kids’ dvds, but I don’t think they actually took any of them; they just left them strewn about.  This is the third or fourth time this has happened to our cars.  Each time the car had been left unlocked.  Mostly the thieves just steal the change from the ashtray, but in the past they have also taken an iPod, and this time a check. It’s not so much the small amount of money and property we have lost, but the idea that someone is outside robbing us while we sleep is unnerving.  We have gotten the impression that people are walking the street each night checking car door handles, taking things from the cars if they open.  We are going to start leaving the porch light on at night to cast a little more light onto the cars in the driveway.  I have filed a police report about this incident, although I have let others go by without filing.   Ethan

reductions.  The West End has already had our lights adjusted. If a light pole has a yellow tag attached- then the light has been turned off.  A blue tag states that the light has been put on timer. Lights will remain on during normal active hours (dusk to midnight) and off during typical non-activehours (midnight to either dawn or 5:30 a.m.)

An update from Officer Anderson who was at our Spring West End Neighborhood meeting:

West End Neighbors,

Yesterday a burglar was caught in a house, on the east side of Santa Rosa. Following the arrest, officers discovered he lived in the 800 block of Davis St. A search warrant was served there, and more stolen property was located. I do not know if he is the person committing the auto burglaries in your neighborhood, but it may be worth a call to the detective. I have attached the media release for your information.

Daisy lives at 300 Boyce Street, email Katherine at chadandkj@comcast.net

Our old kitty daisy went missing Saturday night. A neighbor found her disoriented/sleepy behind their car and kindly placed her on our porch bench in a blanket. When we came home she was gone and we have not seen her since. Given her age (17) we believe she may have passed but we do not know where. If anyone finds her we would like to know so we can take care of her. She is a grey/white cat, small/thin due to age. Any news would be appreciated.

Thanks, Katherine

New Car break-in occurred last night (March 14th). Resident went out to carport (located on Hewett St.) to find windows smashed.

West End Neighbors take notice!

On Wednesday Morning ( 2 to 5 a.m.) 3 cars on Jefferson St. (near W. 7th) were broken into. Stereo systems and speakers were ripped out and other items stolen. One car in particular suffered $4000 of damage and nothing was stolen except prescription sunglasses.

We need to be vigilant about keeping our eyes and ears open. Have a conversation with your neighbors and discuss the situation so everyone is aware and willing to call police and/or their neighbors should a suspicious situation arise. Take special consideration to where you park your cars. Motion lights and security lighting are a good idea.

Remember that our neighbors on W. 7th also recently had both of their cars stolen: a Maroon 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon and a Gold 1997 Previa Minivan. At last report, they had not been found or returned. The family is very upset about it- (and without cars!)

There was also an unverified report about an attempted truck theft on Hewett (on the West side of Dutton) on Sunday night.

Our next West End Neighborhood Association meeting is on Thursday, March 18th at 7 p.m. at the Assistance League of So. Co. 5 W. 6th Street. As a timely coincidence, one of our special guests is Santa Rosa’s new Chief of Police, Tom Schwedhelm.

Two unfortunate news items- both crime related.

Cars theft on W. 7th Street- Heads up to the neighborhood. We’ve now had BOTH of our cars stolen from in front of our house. Friday afternoon Tait (our son) left the keys to the car in the door of our ‘96 Maroon Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon. They drove off in it around 3:15 with a car and a full set of keys. We immediately had the locks changed on our house, but as it is more of an ordeal AND insurance does not cover changing the car locks, we had not yet done the same for the van.  Last night they came back and stole our Previa. That one is a gold, ‘97 Previa mini van. It has a dent in the passenger door, but is otherwise in great shape. I’m particularly upset about that one. Please spread the word.  Thanks, Tim

Police Press Releases 3/8/2010

On March 6, 2010, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers of the Santa Rosa Police Department responded to the 700 block of Wilson Street regarding a subject beating a dog. While en route, witnesses reported hearing the dog’s labored breathing and whimpering.

Upon arrival officers located a dog tethered to a fence. The dog was bleeding profusely from its mouth and head. Officers immediately called the Sonoma County Animal Control who responded to the scene and transported the mixed breed dog to a local veterinarian for care. It was later learned the dog sustained a possible fractured jaw and head and eye trauma.

Investigating officers determined witnesses heard the assault on the dog and confronted a subject who had been striking the animal with a stick.

At the conclusion of the investigation officers arrested 25 year old Santa Rosa resident Todd L. Naus on the charge of felony cruelty to an animal. Naus was then transported to the Sonoma County Jail.

Hope you are enjoying the Holidays!

Friday, December 18th- 6 p.m. to 8:30 3rd Annual West End Caroling Night. Our roaming carolers will tour through the neighborhood and then end up for a potluck holiday party at Robin’s house (127 W. 6th Street). We will do the last round of carols at Robin’s house and expect to be back at her house around 7:30 or 8 p.m.
