Ahhh… good times are just ahead. Bocce season is opening Friday Night and there’s a summer full of fun events ahead.

Friday Night, May 20th- West End Summer Bocce begins. It’s finally time to spend wonderful nights at DeMeo Park! Bocce is a most incredible social event- and lucky for us it is EVERY Friday night! Bring a dish to share.  The West End Neighborhood Association has procured a use permit that allows us to to drink a little wine (in the true Italian style) while we play bocce. The permit is only for Friday Night Bocce and folks participating in the event. This is a family and dog friendly event. Location: DeMeo Park  Time: 6:30 p.m. See Bocce 2010 Photo Gallery

July 16th, Saturday- West End Neighborhood Annual BBQ and Bicycle Parade. Decorate your favorite human powered contraption and ride in the parade! (Remember- 18 years and younger must wear bike helmets.)  BBQ to follow.

June 12th, Sunday-  3rd Annual Mostly Python. Silly people take to the streets to be silly…..Live Monty Python skits from the “TOAD PLAYAS”,live bands,food,beers in the street.holy grails,fun ,frivolity and good times in the street outside the Toad.

June 10th- 12th- Harmony Festival. Maxfield Arts and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club (FBUC) present an exciting new attraction for Harmony Festival 2011 titled The Steampunk Garage, including Santa Rosa-based builders also known as Whiskeydrunk Cycles, Todd Barricklow, Krank-Boom-Clank and The Feed Barn, all of whom are intimately entwined with the North Bay’s popular annual Hand-car Regatta. Ananta De Tally plays on June 12th.

July 10th- August 14th -Live at Julliard. Every Sunday evening- enjoy live music in a beautiful setting. Most important dates (featuring West End artists!) July 10th- Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs, August 14th- Quarter Mile Combo. Two awesome bands you will not want to miss!

It’s all about creativity, innovation and talent in the West End. There are many, many opportunities to explore your own talent or enjoy the talent of another West Ender. Don’t forget- we are looking for talented kids for the Kid’s Talent Show on Sunday, May 22nd.

May 21 & 22, Saturday & Sunday-The Maker Faire is one of the most creative, unrestrained events celebrating arts, crafts, science and engineering. All the big Regatta vehicles including West End favorites the Hennepin Crawler and Murray the the fish and the entire Fun Bike Unicorn Club (all those wickedly crazy bike folks) will be attending.  As the World’s Largest DIY Festival, this two-day family friendly Faire has something for everyone – a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker mindset. Never has learning been so much fun or transplanted into a carnival-like atmosphere where fans of all ages explore several exposition and workshop pavilions, an outdoor midway, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and DIY competitions. May 22nd, Sunday- West End Children’s Talent Show. We have a few local kiddos (and need more) that want to show off their talents. Allen and Lea have graciously offered to host the kid’s talent show on Sunday, May 22 about 3pm. It will be a small “low key” talent show. Remember, low key and fun is the idea. Kids can sing, play the kazoo, lip sync, recite a poem, perform magic tricks, tell jokes, act in a skit with other kids, juggle or display tricks they’ve taught the dog.

May 27th, Friday. An Evening with Conspiracy-A-Go-G0, Sharky Coast & ANANTA. Local music in an intimate setting. This is your chance to see the West End’s own amazing electric violinist and hula-hooper, Ananta! Free. Location: My Friend Joe’s Coffee Shop 1810 Mendocino Ave. Time: 7 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.


School of Drama – The Youth Summer Musical Theater Workshop. This Summer workshop will culminate in a four performance run of Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Students will receive training in acting, dance and singing in a nurturing and challenging atmosphere. Workshop behinds June 13th and last performance is on July 17th. The West End is home to many creative artists and performers. We are also in the midst of some of the best venues for Live Theater and music. Lucky us!

West End artist William Smith is a featured artist for the Imagery Winery Artist Label Series.  The winery will be releasing their WOW OUI! wine with his label. The Artist Label Series wine and merchandise is only sold in their tasting room and their website. The labels in the artist series change every year so when the run sells out that’s it for that label. The artwork is now part of the collection of the winery but it will be on display for the next month or so.  Wil will be at the winery signing bottles and other merchandise with his image on March 19th the Savor Sonoma Valley Barrel Tasting weekend.  William Smith website Imagery Winery/Savor Sonoma Valley info

March 18th- April 3rd- The Ticking Clock A humorous, moving and timely play that draws inspiration from a series of true stories. Each character reflects upon the impact her own biological clock has had on her life’s choices. March is Women’s History Month. A lovely weekend is on the horizon. In addition to what’s already been posted, two new events of interest. Remember on Saturday to set aside a bit of time to clean up DeMeo Park. Somebody’s got to do it. Right?

February 11th, Friday- Vespertine Dreams: A contortionist,dangerous stunts, fire breathing, fire eating, glass eating, knife throwing, a spellbinding burlesque troupe and a poorly-trained goat. We have art, acting, music and yes, drama, in the West End. (Aren’t we lucky?) Here’s the latest:

Tim Sarter- is a very hard working West End Musician. He plays in several great bands (Miss Kitty & the Big Dogs, The Hank Band to name only two) and is currently starring in the Heritage Music Theatre production of  “Woody Guthrie’s American Song“. An exuberant musical celebration of America, Woody Guthrie’s American Song tells the life of the rambling folk singer through his words and music. For more information on this show – click here!

Amber Lee Baker- Another busy West End musician, Amber is just kicking off her Accordion Babes tour promoting the compilation CD of 12 female accordionistas and their awesome calendar. On 12/08/2010: Amber took Best Performance for her rendition of her original “Waltzing By Just Holding Hands” at the West Coast Songwriters Competition – Martinez. As part of her prize, Amber Lee will perform a showcase of three originals at their next competition in February.

The Baby Seal Club has been working on their debut cd.  Check out, “The Otter Dance”- click here! It’s something to look forward to but in the meantime,  singer Choklit Chanteuse (one of the West End’s most creative )  is busy at work producing what is bound to be her best creation of all. 6th Street Playhouse acting out in the West End: Two new productions plus the 6th Street Improv!

Opening Jan. 7 – “Art” – A sophisticated send-up of modern art framed by the hilarious exploration of loyalty and friendship. Originally produced in 1995 in Paris, French farce meets ‘Seinfeld’ in this play by Yasmina Reza which won a Tony for Best Play in 1998. Opens Jan. 7 through Jan. 23, 2011.

Opening Jan. 14 – “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash” – A musical tribute to the “man in black” featuring more than 30 of Cash’s legendary hit songs. Opens Jan. 14 through Feb. 13, 2011.

On Sunday, Jan. 16 – 6th Street Improv! takes over the Studio Theatre and the set of “Art.” Don’t miss the spontaneous and outrageous laugh fest when they perform with this month’s theme entitled “Artistic License.”

Lots of holiday happenings right in the neighborhood :

December 15th, Wednesday- Christmas Movie Night.    First movie for the whole family, 1983′s “Christmas Story”.  Following that is “Christmas Tree Blues”, a short film that will be making its Sonoma County premiere, co-produced by our own Choklit Chanteuse and sound design by Clifford Hill.  To round out the evening,  the 1988 Christmas blockbuster, “Die Hard”.  This night of Christmas movie magic was created by Skye Barnett & Clifford Hill. December 18th, Saturday- West End Christmas Caroling- The weather outside might be frightful- so the carolers aren’t quite sure what the plan is. Ham for the Holidays- November 26th- December 19th. Back by Popular Demand! Written & Directed by Shad Willingham   Set on Christmas Eve in a small radio station (WHAM) in Georgia (circa 1940), a group of actors await the arrival of Orson Welles who is scheduled to make a guest appearance on their broadcast.

A Christmas Carol- School of Drama Winter Workshop production. December 17, 18, 19 at 7 p.m. December 18, 19 at 2 p.m. Student performers ages 8 to 16 years will lead audience members on a nostalgic journey back in time to Victorian England.

6th Street Improv- Improvised Radio Show December 19th, Sunday. 6th Street Improv uses the set of Ham for the Holidays to create their own 1940′s style radio show. Will include completely new, never-before-seen or heard improvised songs, sound effects, serial stories, and sponsors.

Holiday Horse & Carriage Rides in Historic Railroad Square- A fun holiday tradition. Weekends until Christmas Eve (weather permitting) 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This will be a very busy weekend for Railroad Square and the West End Neighborhood. One of the benefits to living in a downtown neighborhood- entertainment and events are right outside your front door. Forewarned is forearmed- take note of street closures and traffic. No big whoop… just plan your weekend accordingly Remember, you could “Regatta” all weekend and never leave the ‘hood.

September 24th, Friday- CHOPS – The unveiling of Locust-Motive. An evening of innovative art.
