NOTE! Put it on your calendar. The West End Neighborhood Association Fall Meeting will be November 17th, Thursday at 7 p.m. at the DeTurk Round Barn. It’s a good time to see neighbors before rain, cold and holidays keep us busy and indoors. News:

9th Street Community Mural: The finishing detail of the 9^th Street Community Mural is scheduled to be completed on Thursday, November 10^th. The “St. Rose Neighborhood” and “West End Neighborhood” will greet those who travel through the underpass. The Mural Committee members: Denise Hill from St. Rose Neighborhood & Sher Ennis and Lea Barron-Thomas from West End Neighborhood started the project in the Summer of 2009. Their goal was to take a dark, uninviting space and make it friendlier and easy to maintain. The Mural was funded by a City of Santa Rosa CAB grant. Mission complete!

A place to walk

Chop’s Teen Club members are working on a food drive. SAY (Social Advocates for Youth) has a Teen food pantry that is pretty bare. The teens decided to help them and a food drive was the first thing on the list. The Chop’s members will be dropping off boxes to stores in selected Railroad Square dropping bags off at houses in the neighborhood to collect items that people can spare or don’t use. Just leave this bag with any non-perishable food items you can spare in a visible place near your front door. Chops members will come by next Thursday 11/10 between 4pm and 6pm to collect the bags. Only non-perishable items will be collected.

DeMeo Park Clean up: The Interact Club at Chops and S. R. Rotary teamed up on Saturday to revive, refresh and clean up DeMeo Park. Check it out… it looks fabulous.

New Pedestrian trail: The City of S. R. has been constructing a new 10 foot wide pedestrian path from No. Dutton Ave to the S. R. Creek Tail. It is estimated that the new ramp will open by November 11th.

Thanksgiving without cooking or dishes or traveling? It is possible if you have Thanksgiving at Starks. The Thanksgiving Menu (Roast Willie Bird Turkey, Chef Mark’s Andouille Sausage & Wild Mushroom Stuffing, Traditional Giblet Gravy & Pomegranate-Cranberry Relish) will be served from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Most regular menu items will be available. North Bay Hootenanny every Wednesday at the Last Day Saloon. Come see traveling acts, up-and-comers, and local favorites! These shows are free and all ages, but try to bring some cash to donate to the artists- thanks! . November 12^th, Saturday- The Assistance League “New to You” Shop invites you to a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the Artstart’s murals on their building. Five art panels display models wearing vintage clothing from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. ArtStart artist is Chiara Sarter (That’s Tim Sarter and Chelsea Jacobsen’s daughter.) Nov. 15th, Tuesday A Christmas Story Preview night will benefit the Railroad Square Association for beautification and promotion. West End traffic alert: November 5^th, Saturday- Run4Wishes 5 & 10 K Run-Walk. Between the hours of 9 am and 11:30 am on Saturday, half of W. 6th street will be blocked off for runners, vehicles may still pass. W. 6th street will not be closed at any time. Volunteers on Pierson will briefly halt traffic for runners exiting the Pierson Reach. Want to be involved? Register for Race by visiting the Fleet Feet Sports store. Walkers or Runners, strollers and pets on leash welcome. 300 participants are anticipated. Appearance from NBC Hit reality series “The Biggest Loser” by Ashley Johnston, Koli Palu. November 10^th, Thursday- S. R. Sneak Preview of “Division III: Football’s Finest”. Santa Rosa native (and West End’s Catherine DePrima’s son) Marshall Cook is debuting his first feature film here next week. The film was inspired by Santa Rosans who influenced Marshall. He is donating half of the box office receipts to Cardinal Newman Youth Empowerment Services. Movie stars Andy Dick, Adam Carolla, Marshall Cook, Bryan Callen and Sally Kirkland. Wine Down, Eat Up Thursdays- Ray D’Argenzio owner of D’Argenzio Winery says that he will continue to host this event through the Fall and winter seasons each Thursday from 5-9 p.m. It features live music- this week Chris Rovetti and the Meatballs, wine and four food trucks. SRPD K9s have new life saving, bullet resistance vests. K9s are often the first to get punched, kicked, stabbed or shot. Concerned about the safety of the SRPD K9s, Allen Thomas and Lea Barron-Thomas worked with a number of generous community members and the S. R. Police Department to purchase and donate these vests and also new bite suits, a vital training tool for K9 training. The very generous community members who also contributed: Western Farm Center, Betsy Hall & Gene Wright, Jennifer Watson, Zyromski & Konicek Attorneys at Law, Exchange Club, Burbank Savings, Rick Dellar & Lehman and Waggener Dental Practice. SRPD K9 Boz, Officer Berg display a safety vest

The West End Kid’s Halloween Parade was a wonderful event. Friends and neighbors met to show off their outfits and to parade around the neighborhood and then everyone was off for trick and treating. Lots of West End houses were decked out for the enjoyment of little goblins. Neighbor William Basie Daye III, a professional D. J., inspired us with music and a light show and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club wowed everyone with their spectacular human powered vehicles. Special thanks to Will Smith- who came up with the idea, Jacquie Smith for organizing the event and Gladis Calderson who took video in hand to record the event. Good old fashioned neighborhood fun! News tidbits from the West End and Railroad Square

The West End Neighborhood was recognized by the City of Santa Rosa for participating in their Park Clean Up and Improvement Program. The West End has adopted the DeMeo Bocce courts. Every spring, neighbors organize a clean up of the courts and park. The courts are tended during the bocce season. West End Neighbors also were instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Vintage Rose Garden and Dog Park at DeTurk Round Barn Park. Great job!

DeMeo Park Bulletin Board- Speaking of neighbors improving our parks, DeMeo Park has a new bulletin board- actually it is a reuse of the bulletin board that used to be at DeTurk Round Barn park. Thanks to David Ernst and Allen Thomas for installing it. Go by and check it out!

Movie Maker: Catherine DePrima’s son Marshall Cook will be screening his movie- Division 3, Football’s Finest in Santa Rosa on Thursday, November 10th at the Roxy Theatre at 7:30pm. There will be a Q&A with Marsh and Andy Dick. Division 3 is a college football movie with Andy Dick, Will Sasso, Mo Collins, Will Sasso, Debra Wilson and more. You can get ticket’s on line at http://www.marshallcook.com They’re only $10 and Marshall’s split is going toward a Charity. Not bad for a boy who used to live on Boyce Street!

Snoopy in S. Korea- Santa Rosa’s “Sister City” in South Korea is Jeju Island. For many years, Don Taylor (restaurant owner of Omelette Express) has forged a relationship between our two cities. Don has been instrumental in getting the first Peanut statue in all of Korea. The statue is a beautiful rendition of Snoopy in bronze and he will be placed on a Korean dog house of black lava stone with a red sand stone roof. To see photos go to Omelette Express. New Raw Bar at the Steakhouse- Stark’s Steakhouse’s well-known Happy Hour, delicious beef or a light bite later in the evening makes it a favorite destination for West Enders. With their revamped menu, we can now look forward to enjoying sustainable seafood. Check out the new raw bar through the window as you enter the dining room, where you will see seafood chefs shucking their hearts out daily. Stark’s Steakhouse is located at 521 Adam’s Street in a historic restaurant site that was loving restored and improved by Mark & Terri Stark. The Bones are a hit

New to You Shop- The Assistance League will have a a brand new mural on their building on the Adams Street side. It will look like old fashioned shop windows and besides bring a little life to that side of their building, it will hopefully deter tagging. The Assistance League has made many improvements to their building. West Enders appreciate the renovation and enjoy having the shop right in the neighborhood. The Assistance League is a sponsor of the West End Neighborhood Association. Thank-you!

Wine Down Thursdays- Don’t forget that every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. is Wine Down Thursday’s at D’Argenzio’s Winery. This Thursday will feature jazzy caberet music from The Moonbeams, 4 food trucks and, of course, D’Argenzio wines. It’s a great place to socialize, eat and drink. Rail Cars- For many years, there have been four rail cars sitting on the SMART site. In September 2010, two of the rail cars left for their new home with the Timber Heritage Association. Another railcar was moved this month and the last one has been moved to the center or the SMART site waiting for it’s day to move to it’s new home Before you know it- they will be gone. Free but donations to support SRJC’s Planetarium are gratefully appreciated. October 12th, Wednesday- The West End Full Moon Tour. Discover the Secrets of the West End under October’s first full moon. Co. museum’s Eric Stanley’s stories and facts will help you imagine how the route looked when Burbank rode it. Bring: Helmet, water, snacks, clothing layers in case of a inclement wheather. Nick Tipon, Pomo Tribal elder, is from the Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria and he grew up in the West End. Join Nick and a So. Co. Parks Ranger on a guided hike to the east ridge of Tolay Lake Regional Park. Learn about this incredible property and its history. A 30-minute presentation in the Stone Floor barn will cover cultural resources of the Tribe, their connections to the land and more. Hike requires good physical condition. The 4^th Annual 2011 Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta & Exposition of Mechanical and Artistic Wonders is on September 25th Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. As tradition dictates…. it will be blazing hot… so dress with that in mind. Summer Activities for Teens and Youth

Do your kids have a plan for the summer? No need to leave the West End… there’s a wealth of opportunity right here!

CHOPs has announced their summer program, Work Ready Program, in workforce development where kids (15yrs +) can learn what it takes to be a good employee and earn a Certificate awarded by the So. Co. Office of Education (SCOE). Teens will learn everything from writing a resume and interview techniques, to soft skills such as manners and the social skills necessary to succeed in the business world. Chops already offers training programs in welding, barista, art and more. It’s also a good place to socialize and has lots of activities like dances, music and volley ball. June 13 – July 17, 2011 6^th Street Playhouse- SCHOOL OF DRAMA YOUTH SUMMER MUSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP Ages: 8 – 16 years No audition is necessary, but space is limited! Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The 6th Street Playhouse is dedicated to providing young theater students a nurturing and challenging atmosphere where they have an opportunity of learn, grow, and express themselves through the craft of theater! Participants will receive training in the areas of acting, dance, and singing from Master instructors, culminating in a four-performance run of Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (music & lyrics by Roger Miller, book by William Hauptman, based on the novel by Mark Twain). Other classes available for Youth/Teen (Ages 3-17) and Adults available. Summer Session 2011 – Youth/Teen Class Schedule: June 6 - July 23, 2011 . Courses begin the week of June 6, 2011. Late March News

It was a stormy night. For those of you who don’t know, W. 7th St. suffered damage from the storm on Saturday night, March 19th. A large tree blew down causing damage to a power pole, several cars and taking out power. Several neighbors and Franco American had no power on Sunday. It was the first time in the bakery’s long history that they were unable to bake bread on schedule. In spite of connecting to a generator, Franco American customers did not get their Monday delivery. The jury is still out on whether March came in like a lion AND out like a lamb.

Stark’s- Specialty Cocktails with a Neighborhood feel. West End neighbors frequent Stark’s for food, drink and socializing. It’s almost like our own version of “Cheers” (in an upscale way). First Musical Performance in DeTurk Round Barn- The Spring West End meeting featured West End artist Ken Risling and his daughter Oona Risling-Sholl singing Ken’s award-winning song. It was an awesome performance and the barn’s accoustics are amazing. See it here Shameless Love

Chop’s Teen Center in the News- Chop’s provides teens with fun activities in a safe environment. In addition to dancing, music, art, computers and sports, Chop’s also offers culinary classes such as Barista Basics. This is a class that teaches marketable life skills.
