The first West End Poodle Party was a smashing success. There were at least 25 poodles, mostly standard but also a few other sizes. We even had a few Doodles. Owners and their Poodles had a great time socializing. Western Farm Center’s Bob Bertolini, every dog’s favorite uncle and owner of two poodles, brought delicious dog ice cream. Linda, also from Western Farm, handed out treats to a very enthusiastic audience. We are hoping to have more Poodle Parties in the future. For more photos Facebook or West End Dog Park Photo Gallery

Kellie from Decker Street reports: One of our West End neighbors was in the Press Democrat today, well his Restaurant was. Luis on Decker Street owns Las Palmas Restaurant which was chosen as one of the best places for Fish Tacos in the County. I found a link:  http://www.biteclubeats.com/2010/08/fish-taco-quest.html and the article says:   Top Pick: Las Palmas  Fish tacos aren’t always on the menu, but when they are, jump. Blackened fish tacos here are all about the fish, and less about the batter. Loaded up with cabbage and a side of beans and rice, it’s a meal and a half. What keeps us coming back to Las Palmas are menu specials like these that go way beyond boring burritos and quesadillas. 415 Santa Rosa Ave., Santa Rosa, (707) 546-3091.

The DeTurk Round Barn Project is still moving forward. The Dog park was opened July 16th and the Barn itself was settled back down on it’s new foundation July 19th.  At this point, they are continuing to work on the wood framing. The old roof is now being removed in preparation for the new roof. The new sidewalk and corner at Donahue and W. 8th Street is now in progress. The hope is that the project will be finished by the end of October- but this is subject to change due to varied circumstance.

The West End Neighborhood Association is planning a special event in celebration of the finished project. More information as it becomes available.

Stolen Bike Report: I live at 216 Hewett St. I’ve been here since 1998 and never had any problems with theft, despite forgetting to close my garage many times. Unfortunately this “time of innocence” has ended. My bike was stolen from my garage sometime between Thursday the 22nd and Tuesday the 27th. The garage door was down and locked. The thief had to enter through our backyard gate and side garage door. It was my beloved Dahon folding commuter bike I ride to work everyday during the school year. It is gray and has 20” wheels. If anyone sees it around, please let me know. Cynthia McDaniel  Email

It’s been a busy summer with lots of fun events happening in the West End.

The West End Summer Picnic and BBQ was a friendly and relaxed gathering of friends and neighbors. This year, we  started the event off with our first ever Bicycle Parade. From the Hennepin Crawler to  Todd Barricklow’s Two Penny bicycle to festive, decorated bicycles- it was an exciting of collection self-propelled wheeled objects. For photos of the event, Click Here! Thanks goes to Western Farm for use of their huge BBQ and the hay bales and to Bob Bertolini for always taking good care of us. Guy Dean and Heather Rosales for slaving over the hot grill. Maggie O’Brien, Jennifer Watson and Frank Keene serving as Bicycle Parade safety monitors.

West End Summer Bocce has been a great success in spite of cooler than expected evenings. Last week, La Palmarcito Market treated everyone to their wonderful cerviche and salsa. David Farish, of Krank Boom Clank, amused one and all (but the dogs) with another mutant ride-able sculptures of delight named Murray the Fish. Remember, Bocce is every Friday night at DeMeo Park. CHOP’s Teen Club Summer Art Gala was an impressive collection of teen art and talent. The art displayed was by the Side by Side Professional Art Series which teamed professional artists with teens. The great food was catered by CHOP’S catering crew. It was a enjoyable event and excellent opportunity to see everything CHOP’s offers. For Photos Click Here!

The West End is a busy place- there’s always lots to do. Here’s a run down of recent events:

The West End to Hopmonk Full Moon ride was a great success -with over 20 riders enjoying the lovely weather. The group met at DeMeo Park  and then rode to the Hopmonk via the Joe Rodota trail. After a bit of socializing and sustenance (aka beverage and munchies), the group rode back under a full moon back to West End. Some folks continued onto Railroad Square, ultimately ending up at Starks for a debriefing.  See the ride video- Click here! For more photos Click Here!

Leadership Institute for Ecology and Economy had their June Fellows Happy Hour at DeMeo park- The Leadership Institute, dedicated to ensuring a sustainable future,  trains people to be more effective leaders and to educate community leaders and the public to understand that the future of our economy and quality of life are dependent on each other. The Fellows of the Institute were introduced to the West End- a downtown neighborhood with small, efficient homes easily accessible to local businesses. The event was sponsored by  Thomas & Co. Consulting, Allen Thomas is a 2003 graduate of the institute. They were also treated to beer brewed by the West End’s Dave Drake, yummy appetizers made by Andrew Zarrillow and Burning Hawk Wines poured by Nick Papadopoulos and Scott Johnson.  Leadership Institute

303 Hewett Street- Wow! Check out the rehabilitation of the historic cottage located at 303 Hewett Street. This 19th Century Vernacular Box house, built before 1904, had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was sold- and the new owner has brought it back to life. Great care and attention to historically correct detail were made by the project manager- “My Handyman” John Moorhead (236-2577).  This is a living example of the benefit of living in a historic district.  This house would not look the same if it was repaired with T111 siding! (Note: the vinyl windows were added before the rehab)
