Bikes are evidently a popular item for theft. Living downtown… most of us have bikes to get around. Many neighbors are serious Grand Fondo type bike riders and a few residents have custom made creations. Let’s be diligent about protecting our bikes. Watch for suspicious people especially when they are where they don’t belong… like on your neighbor’s property.

Hey Guys
Finn’s bike was stolen last week too. We figure out of our driveway here on Jefferson.  We aren’t big lock everything up kind of people but just a heads up, they are out there….

Imagine 6th and W. 6th Street as a Neighborhood Greenway!

6th and W. 6th Street is the street that joins the West End Neighborhood and Railroad Square. It’s unique because it’s shares many uses- homes, multiple unit dwellings, 6th Street Theater, Chops Teen Club, The Assistance League’s “New to You Shop”, Tee Vax and others line this street. It’s also used for events such as 5K races, Chop’s Teen Club happenings and of course, The  Great West End & Railroad Square Handcar Regatta.

Today, the street works well. It has very low traffic excepting events and is safe for both pedestrians and bicyclists to use the street (especially since the south side lacks sidewalks!). It allows parking for the 6th Street Playhouse and special events.

For the future, the street could be designed to be an attractive, multi-use street- safe for ALL. Check this out! Portland’s Bike Boulevards become Neighborhood Greenways.

Sounds good? Those are Class 3/ Sharrow streets with speed bumps, curb extensions, median islands and many tools to create a safe environment.

On February 1st, the S. R. City Council will vote on the 2010 S. R. Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. This plan will not give us the wonderful Neighborhood Greenways that we deserve. It will put Class 2 bike lanes on the street and remove parking from homes, businesses, events and our wonderful non-profits.

This is what the proposed plan will look like- you can see it “live” in front of 113 W. 6th Street.

North side will have parking, bike land and travel lane.

North side will have parking, bike land and travel lane.

On the South Side, parking will be removed to allow room for a bike lane.

On the South Side, parking will be removed to allow room for a bike lane.

Write to S. R. City Council today. Tell them that 6th & W. 6th Street merits the opportunity to become a Neighborhood Greenway. Keep 6th & W. 6th Street’s designation as Class 3/Sharrows NOT Class 2. Insist that our street deserves all the elements such as speed humps & curb extentions to allow it to be safe for ALL users.

Awareness and communication are the two tools that we can use as neighbors to keep out neighborhood safe. The following two neighbor reports are an example of communication- the second part, of course, is to be watchful and engaged.

W. 6th Street Burglary- Neighbors Denise & Ben report that their home was burglarized.  Someone entered through a closed, possibly unlocked window- took valuables and exited through a rear door. This happened sometime between October 20th & 22nd.

Bicyclists Beware! West End resident Ken Risling discovered a bare, steel wire strung across Eddie Lane in Sebastopol. This wire was about “neck high” and could have cause severe injury to a bicyclist or anyone else. This happened in Sebastopol… but could happen else where. See full story- Press Demo

Chicken roaming Boyce Street. A little hen is roaming the West End. It spent a little time in Rachel & Carissa’s yard (obviously looking for delicious organic treats) and then flew to the roof next door. If you’re missing your chicken- she was on Boyce Street around 1 p.m. on Friday, October 29th.

Roaming chicken needs to go home.
