February 8th, Wednesday- BoDean Asphalt Neighborhood Meeting  This is your chance to ask about the BoDean’s request to install three new 85 foot storage silos at their asphalt plant on Maxwell Court. February 11th, Saturday- Ken Risling and Avery Risling-Sholl  Singer songwriter Ken Risling and traditional musician Avery Risling-Sholl (in his first feature performance since his return from Scotland) will play the night away with original songs and music from the Appalachians to banks of Aberdeen. Duets and solos, you will be serenaded by voice, guitar and fiddle while you sip your drink and eat your treats at the wonderful warm atmosphere of the coffee house on railroad square. September… the end of the summer season. The Last West End Bocce is on Friday, September 16th- that’s when we take the group photo so plan to show up early. The last West End Summer Movie night is on Friday, September 9th. The movie will be “Spirited Away”. On the other hand- The Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta and all the surrounding events will be at the end of the month. So it’s all good.

Those who follow him know Avery has been studying traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He is back stateside for a brief stay, and wants to play in his home neighborhood. Songwriter Ken Risling (“Dad”) leaps with joy at another chance to team up with his son for an evening of melody, harmony, and singing strings. Other musical friends may show up as well. Join them for an evening of fun, music (and maybe a few tears). Location: Aroma Roasters 95 Fifth St  Time: 8:00 PM

August 9th, Tuesday- Mad Maggies (Celtic Polka)  The Mad Maggies are seven musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area who play roots-driven, rowdy folk fusion with a dash of hot pepper and a swig of slivovitz — they kick up some dust. The West End’s own Tim Sarter on Bass. Location: Park Stage at Sonoma County Fair Time: 6:00, 7:15, 8:15 p.m.

August 10th, Wednesday- Wednesday Night Market. Every Wednesday night downtown Santa Rosa holds a market with produce, crafts, food and music.   This is a great opportunity to see musical group, “Juan Boulder”- featuring the West End’s own Bob Murnane (Murnane Floors on W. 6th Street is a wonderful West End sponsor!). This promises to be a “foot stomping” good time- Juan Boulder will be alternating sets with a Clogging group. They will play on the Main Stage. August 13th, Saturday- Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs. Jump, Swing & Blues. Excellent vocals and musicians featuring West End musician Tim Sarter on bass. The other excellent band members are Shannon Rider, Paul Urguhart, Dennis Sherman, Mark Marelli, Brandon Hunt & Justin Enright. August 14th- The Quarter Mile Combo plays at Live at Juilliard. Pure rockin’ Americana Rockabilly- this 4 piece Americana Rockabilly band features the West End’s own Justin Barr on guitar, vocalist Nettie Hammar, drummer Gary Daly and Todd Troublemaker on bass. A great show. They have a recently released cd “Motels, Gas and Beer”. You will note that the cover photo is shot in front of the DeTurk Winery building. As always, the West End’s talented folks offer lots of opportunities for entertainment. There’s even a chance for those with “special” talent to perform at the Gong Show.

Every Sunday Night – West End DJ Katie Vrooman has a specialty radio show called  “Great Dames, Vintage Chicks,” a collection of torch singers, big band singers and jazz vocalists from the 1930’s- 1960’s. Katie hand selects all the music from the show and talks about it as well. You can also hear Katie on Monday- Friday during mid-day- But the Sunday night show (10 p.m. to midnight) is about female singers who “carry the torch”. The KRUSH 95.9

Proud West End Mother, Catherine DePrima reports that her son, Marshall Cook is currently filming his first Feature Film Directorial. Marshall not only directed, he also wrote the script and acted in it. It was not too long ago that Marshall, was a young boy on Boyce Street.  For more info on Marshall Cook
