 TONIGHT! February 8th, Wednesday- BoDean Asphalt Neighborhood Meeting  This is your chance to ask about the BoDean’s request to install three new 85 foot storage silos at their asphalt plant on Maxwell Court. Feb. 10th to Feb. 26th- “Proof”  On a weekend following the death of her father (a famous mathematician), romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draws Catherine into the most difficult problem of all – how much of her father’s madness ‘or genius’ will she inherit? “Proof” explores the power of love, trust and talent with thoughtfulness and humor as Catherine must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father’s who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. February 11th, Saturday- Ken Risling and Avery Risling-Sholl  Singer songwriter Ken Risling and traditional musician Avery Risling-Sholl (in his first feature performance since his return from Scotland) will play the night away with original songs and music from the Appalachians to banks of Aberdeen. Duets and solos, you will be serenaded by voice, guitar and fiddle while you sip your drink and eat your treats at the wonderful warm atmosphere of the coffee house on railroad square. February 12th, Sunday- We are going to the dogs with two doggie social hours. #1 West End Small Dog Play Hour- a time for the smaller dog to romp with other little dogs. 10 a.m. #2 West End Poodle Party- Time for the Poodles to party. 11 a.m. Location: DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park 819 Donahue Street Time: W. February 12 th, Sunday, LOVE, 6th Street IMPROV Style
(Note: Show will probably sell out. Advanced ticket purchase highly recommended.)  A fabulous evening of laughter and poignant reflection on matters of the heart. 6th Street Improv takes audience suggestions and makes up delightful scenes, songs, and poetry on the spot. They even get a few audience members into the act. For a Valentine’s celebration you won’t soon forget, head on down to 6th Street and let us be your Funny Valentines! $14 Location: 6th Street Playhouse Time: 8 p.m.

August 9th, Tuesday- Mad Maggies (Celtic Polka)  The Mad Maggies are seven musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area who play roots-driven, rowdy folk fusion with a dash of hot pepper and a swig of slivovitz — they kick up some dust. The West End’s own Tim Sarter on Bass. Location: Park Stage at Sonoma County Fair Time: 6:00, 7:15, 8:15 p.m.

August 10th, Wednesday- Wednesday Night Market. Every Wednesday night downtown Santa Rosa holds a market with produce, crafts, food and music.   This is a great opportunity to see musical group, “Juan Boulder”- featuring the West End’s own Bob Murnane (Murnane Floors on W. 6th Street is a wonderful West End sponsor!). This promises to be a “foot stomping” good time- Juan Boulder will be alternating sets with a Clogging group. They will play on the Main Stage. August 13th, Saturday- Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs. Jump, Swing & Blues. Excellent vocals and musicians featuring West End musician Tim Sarter on bass. The other excellent band members are Shannon Rider, Paul Urguhart, Dennis Sherman, Mark Marelli, Brandon Hunt & Justin Enright. Location: Lagunitas Tap Room & Beer Sanctuary 1280 North McDowell Boulevard

August 14th- The Quarter Mile Combo plays at Live at Juilliard. Pure rockin’ Americana Rockabilly- this 4 piece Americana Rockabilly band features the West End’s own Justin Barr on guitar, vocalist Nettie Hammar, drummer Gary Daly and Todd Troublemaker on bass. A great show. They have a recently released cd “Motels, Gas and Beer”. You will note that the cover photo is shot in front of the DeTurk Winery building. Got to love that band!  Free Sunday Concert Series. Enjoy listening to music in a lovely park setting. Great event for the whole family- including the dog. Location: Juilliard Park 227 S. R. September 2nd, Friday- Avery Risling-Sholl & Ken Risling- West Enders Avery Risling-Sholl, vocalist and fiddler extraordinaire, will be joined Ken Risling once again in the hallowed halls of Aroma Roasters.
Those who follow him know Avery has been studying traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He is back stateside for a brief stay, and wants to play in his home neighborhood. Songwriter Ken Risling (“Dad”) leaps with joy at another chance to team up with his son for an evening of melody, harmony, and singing strings. Other musical friends may show up as well. As always, the West End’s talented folks offer lots of opportunities for entertainment. There’s even a chance for those with “special” talent to perform at the Gong Show.

August 27th, Friday 8:30 p.m.- West Enders Ken Risling and Avery Risling-Sholl will be back at Aroma Roasters. Every Sunday Night – West End DJ Katie Vrooman has a specialty radio show called  “Great Dames, Vintage Chicks,” a collection of torch singers, big band singers and jazz vocalists from the 1930’s- 1960’s. Katie hand selects all the music from the show and talks about it as well. You can also hear Katie on Monday- Friday during mid-day- But the Sunday night show (10 p.m. to midnight) is about female singers who “carry the torch”. The KRUSH 95.9

CHOP’s Artist Series Video and upcoming event: There is a great link on the Press Democrat of a video of the Chop’s Artist Series that was captured at the Art Gala. Thought we might want to share it with our neighbors, especially those who were unable to attend the Art Gala. Click Here to watch! Proud West End Mother, Catherine DePrima reports that her son, Marshall Cook is currently filming his first Feature Film Directorial. Marshall not only directed, he also wrote the script and acted in it. It was not too long ago that Marshall, was a young boy on Boyce Street.  For more info on Marshall Cook

The West End Neighborhood is “home” to many resident artists- from songwriters to musicians to artists in various mediums. One of the best benefits of living here is the opportunity to appreciate the skill, inventiveness and the gifts of our own neighborhood community. Put these dates on your calendar!

August 4th, Wednesday 6 p.m.- West End songwriter Ken Risling has qualified for the Petaluma West Coast Songwriters Playoff which will be at the Mystic Theater, Petaluma. Ken will perform one of his songs, accompanied by his very talented daughter, Oona Risling-Sholl. Joining him will be nine other talented songwriters as they all vie for “Best Song of the Year” recognition. Mystic Theater, Petaluma

August 5th, Thursday 7:30 p.m.- D. G. Sculpture Studio and Gallery invites you to attend a musical celebration with visionary musician Manfred Bleffert. This artist has has dedicated his life to developing new music. Although his compositions come out of the stream of 20th century new music, his studies have encompassed music from all cultures and times. D. G. August 20th, Friday 9:30 p.m.- Amber Lee and the Anomalies will perform at Toad in the Hole. Amber Lee is an accordion-ista and singer-songwriter and has recently finished a European tour. Fans can also see Amber on August 21st at the Cotati Accordion Festival

August 21st, Saturday 4-6 p.m. – Artist Reception for West End Artist- William Smith’s show “One Across the Bow”. Join your friends, neighbors and enthusiastic art fans at The Quicksilver Mine Co. Oh lucky West Enders! We have three great opportunities to see the incredible talents that reside in the West End Neighborhood…. and all shows are within walking distance… or at least close by.

June 11th, Friday at 8:30 p.m.- Live music at Aroma Roasters: Mike Ehlers Band with special guest Ken Risling.  Mike Ehlers moves from eco-folk-rap to pop, from alt-country to mellow grooves, from story-folk-with-a-punch to ballads born in the depths of a quieted gratitude.
