What’s up Chick? New Chicks recently arrived at Western Farm Center. The newly hatched chicks are stabilized (hydrated and fed) for 24 hours before they are sold. They were peeping up a storm! Do you know what combines a 5% discount, pet food for seniors and Western Farm Center? Their new Customer Loyalty Card! For the cost of $10,  WFC will give a $5 donation to Kibbles of Kindness (a new program that helps to provide pet food to local seniors) AND 5% off all dog, cat and caged bird food and supplies for every visit for 2012 to your favorite locally owned, neighborhood pet/farm store. Now that sounds like something to crow about. More info  at Western Farm Center

Babies!

Need some Bunny to love?  EASTER is fast approaching  (on April 8th) and after that something the folks at the House Rabbit Society call the “Easter Dump Season”. DON’T purchase a cute little bunny for photos, the holiday or simply the novelty. If you are truly interested in having a Rabbit as a pet- remember it is at least a 10 year commitment. Also, rabbits who live indoors are happier, healthier, more socialized and live a lot longer. You can always wait until after Easter and adopt one from a shelter. For more info on Rabbit Care go to http://rabbit.org

No excuses for unwanted kittens. SpayPAL: a new Low Cost Cat Spay/Neuter program is available to Sonoma County residents. All cat spay/neuter surgeries are just $30 and include a free rabies vaccine. Surgeries are offered every Tuesday & Friday by appointment at the Sonoma Humane Society’s Spay/Neuter Clinic.  Unspayed and unneutered cats are responsible for hundreds of unwanted and abandoned kittens every year. Call (707) 636-1716 to schedule your appointment http://sonomahumane.org/hospital/spay_neuter_surgery.html

SCCRAP On February 26th it looked like there was another dog party at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park yesterday- there was a group of Pits and their owners. Very interesting- the group is called SCRRAP and they are a group of Sonoma County residents advocating for the Bully breeds. They go for monthly walks to different cities- They had their walk yesterday in downtown Santa Rosa starting off at the DeTurk Round Barn. Very cool group- they promote all the right things- responsible ownership, speaking out against Backyard Breeders, saving neglected and abused pits, and spay and neuter of non-show and non working companion dogs.

February holds two very important meetings for West End residents. One is about the uses of the DeTurk Round Barn and the other about an Asphalt plant- both issues can really affect the quality of life in the West End so they must be examined with care.

DeMeo Park Recycle Station- Conservation Corps of North Bay helps at risk youth get their lives back on track with a year’s worth of job training, work experience along with an education to get a GED or H. They will also pick up, on a regular basis, all aluminum, glass, plastic containers and recyclable paper and cardboard deposited in the bins. Another recycle bin will be located at DeTurk Round Barn Park. http://www.conservationcorpsnorthbay.org

The 30” bronze Snoopy will stand on top of his Korean dog house made of black lava stone, with a red sand roof. Roses bushes will be planted next to Snoopy and a nearby walking path will be named, “Santa Rosa Way” in honor our our City. Safe travels, Don!

No More Railcars. The last vintage railroad car was recently removed from the SMART site. All four cars, that made their home in Railroad Square for many years, have been transported to their new home with the Timber Heritage Association. It would have delighted locals, tourists and rail enthusiasts to have the cars on display near our historic depot but dreams like these are not always financially possible. In the meantime, it is absolutely wonderful that they will be preserved and displayed by the museum. http://timberheritage.org

The West End is a wonderful place for dog lovers as there are nearby creeks paths, a beautiful dog park… and of course, our beloved Western Farm Center. Cats are not being ignored either… there is a West End Cat Colony that has been tended by West Ender Charly Thomas. Here’s the latest W. E. Pet Friendly news:

DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park Update: As many of you know, the dog park has been plagued with irrigation issues that have led to a muddy mess – even though it hasn’t rained. There were failed sprinklers, a leaky valve and the Park area (not the dog park) was overwatered- creating runoff into the dog park. This, of course, created a huge unsanitary and unsightly mess. Lisa Grant, Santa Rosa Rec & Parks Superintendent , has assured us that these issues have been addressed. The park is only supposed to be watered one minute a week to keep the irrigation system working- but not more than that. In the meantime, if you notice any dog park issues relating to maintenance- such as broken gates or irrigation issues- Please contact Lisa Grant directly. (707) 543-3774 lgrant@srcity.org. These issues will not be addressed unless Lisa is made aware of them.

Irrigation problems are hopefully resolved.

West End Cat Colony Update: Cats are all doing well. The colony has stabilized to around 13. All cats have been neutered and given shots…. Thanks to the efforts of Charly and Forgotten Felines. If you would like to donate food, please leave a bag of food on Charly’s doorstep at  124 W. 6th. Diamond Brand cat food is a reasonably priced that is available at Western Farm Center. The West End Neighborhood Association donates a bag of food every month… but they do eat more than that. Thanks to Charly for managing this situation
