August 19th, Friday at 8:00pm – August 28th at 2:00pm- Great War Chronicle An elderly woman tells her grandchildren of her early years with their grandfather, when the demands of war sadly separated them in a rock opera production. 6th Street Playhouse presents a rare opportunity to see a professionally produced workshop production of the new musical “Great War Chronicle” written by a noted Bay Area composer, featuring a romantic story set against a historical backdrop. August 20th- Saturday. Redwood Empire Live Steamers Interactive Museum-Come ride this Saturday! Trains will soon be a reality in Santa Rosa. Here’s an opportunity to teach you kids about trains.  Only a few more runs left before the trains are put up for the winter.  The weather is suppose to be perfect for trains and picnics, so pack up the kids, bring a picnic basket and spend the afternoon.Westender Andre Siedentopf  (RELSIM member) says if you mention you saw this event on their website or Facebook- you will get a free ride!! West End Musicians- Tim Sarter & Amber Lee Baker will perform.  Mad Maggies (Celtic Polka)  The Mad Maggies are seven musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area who play roots-driven, rowdy folk fusion with a dash of hot pepper and a swig of slivovitz — they kick up some dust. the West End’s own Tim Sarter on Bass. Tim Sarter: I’ve opened a new play- Stand By Your Man the story of Tammy Wynette with Heritage Music Theater.  It’s running from last weekend through April 17th at the Cinnabar in Petaluma.  It has the same basic band as Lost Highway – Me, Jim Peterson, Dave Zirbel and Chris Rovetti.  What’s more both Chiara and Fiona (daughters) are in it with me! The entire run sold out in one day, but there a still some tix available for the extended, closing weekend of April 15th. March 5th, Saturday- Amber Lee Baker and Gillian Underwood. Amber Lee (West End artist and performer) is a singer, songwriter, accordion-ista. AUDITIONS ANNOUNCED for The Mystery of Irma Vep. 6th Street Playhouse will be auditioning (non-union, male) adult actors for The Mystery of Irma Vep, written by Charles Ludlam. Auditions on: Sunday, March 6th beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. Men auditioning should arrive at 6 p.m. and be prepared to read with several partners.  Actors should also be prepared to read from the script and to participate in some improvisation exercises at the audition.  Please dress for movement-based work. We have art, acting, music and yes, drama, in the West End. (Aren’t we lucky?) Here’s the latest:

Tim Sarter- is a very hard working West End Musician. He plays in several great bands (Miss Kitty & the Big Dogs, The Hank Band to name only two) and is currently starring in the Heritage Music Theatre production of  “Woody Guthrie’s American Song“. An exuberant musical celebration of America, Woody Guthrie’s American Song tells the life of the rambling folk singer through his words and music. For more information on this show – click here!

Amber Lee Baker- Another busy West End musician, Amber is just kicking off her Accordion Babes tour promoting the compilation CD of 12 female accordionistas and their awesome calendar. On 12/08/2010: Amber took Best Performance for her rendition of her original “Waltzing By Just Holding Hands” at the West Coast Songwriters Competition – Martinez. As part of her prize, Amber Lee will perform a showcase of three originals at their next competition in February.

The Baby Seal Club has been working on their debut cd.  Check out, “The Otter Dance”- click here! It’s something to look forward to but in the meantime,  singer Choklit Chanteuse (one of the West End’s most creative )  is busy at work producing what is bound to be her best creation of all. 6th Street Playhouse acting out in the West End: Two new productions plus the 6th Street Improv!

Opening Jan. 7 – “Art” – A sophisticated send-up of modern art framed by the hilarious exploration of loyalty and friendship. Originally produced in 1995 in Paris, French farce meets ‘Seinfeld’ in this play by Yasmina Reza which won a Tony for Best Play in 1998. Opens Jan. 7 through Jan. 23, 2011.

Opening Jan. 14 – “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash” – A musical tribute to the “man in black” featuring more than 30 of Cash’s legendary hit songs. Opens Jan. 14 through Feb. 13, 2011.

On Sunday, Jan. 16 – 6th Street Improv! takes over the Studio Theatre and the set of “Art.” Don’t miss the spontaneous and outrageous laugh fest when they perform with this month’s theme entitled “Artistic License.”

The West End is teeming with creativity and talent.

December 3rd, Friday- Chop’s Variety Showcase. An evening of food and fun to celebrate the successes and talents of Chop’s members. This event is catered by the Chop’s Catering Crew. Free and open to the public. Location: Chops Teen Club 509 Adams Street Time: 4:30- 6:30 p.m.

December 3rd, Friday- The New Horizons Band Holiday Concert. The New Horizons Band highlights the talent of over 60 vintage musicians in a remarkable concert band and a lively swing band. The Holiday Concert will feature seasonal favorites and there is an innovative musical piece with 5 tubas.   Joan Woodhull, well known West End musician and gardener, will play the alto sax. The Hank Band recently played at the Lagunitas Beer Sanctuary. The weather was sultry and the band was hot too. The Hank Band featuring Tahmus Rounds, Chris Rovetti, Dave Zibel, Jim Peterson and the West End’s own Tim Sarter. They also just wrapped up their final show of Hank Williams: Lost Highway and also played. You really missed out if you didn’t get a chance to see them and since Tahmus lives in L.A., it’s a rare treat for them to get together. Last winter the cast and crew of this show performed this play for a run of 26 sold out shows at the 6th Street Playhouse. This month we are bringing it back for 3 shows only at Spreckles Performing Arts Center in Rohnert Park. She plays the accordion, is a singer-songwriter and is part of the Accordion Babe Pin-Up Calendar revolution – reinventing the accordion as a sexy instrument. Every Sunday Night – West End DJ Katie Vrooman has a specialty radio show called “Great Dames, Vintage Chicks,” a collection of torch singers, big band singers and jazz vocalists from the 1930’s- 1960’s. Katie hand selects all the music from the show and talks about it as well. You can also hear Katie on Monday- Friday during mid-day- But the Sunday night show (10 p.m. to midnight) is about female singers who “carry the torch”. The KRUSH

Auditions announced for Intimate Apparel.  The 6th Street Playhouse has announced general auditions for Intimate Apparel on Wednesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. for three available roles: Mayme – ’30s’, African American George – ’30s’, Barbadian immigrant Mrs. Van Buren – ’30s’, white American  Appointments are not necessary. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.  Actors cast in the production will receive a small stipend. Spring is here and there are lots of ways to enjoy the outdoors. The West End is home to many gifted artists and performers. Take note of the many opportunities to support our local talent.

The West End Charter School has two fund raisers (see below) – a bake sale on Bocce clean up day and a yard sale. They welcome your support through donations and purchases. Questions? email to info@WECS.us

Don’t Forget! May 1st, Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.- The West End Neighborhood Spring yard sale. Time for Spring Cleaning! Empty out those closets and garages. (Rain Date is May 8th). $5 donation if you would like to participate- this covers costs of ads, signs that will be put up (and taken down) on the day of sale. Want to purge but don’t want to sell? The West End Charter School yard sale welcomes your donations. Drop them off at 127 W. 6th Street from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, April 29th.

April 24th, Saturday at 11 a.m.- Bocce Court Clean up at DeMeo Park. A yearly tradition, spruce up the courts for the West End Summer Bocce Season. Bring tools, gloves and don’t forget the sunblock.  Plan to have a snack because the West End Charter School will hold a bake sale at the clean up.

April 25th, Sunday 10 a.m.- Keep the Tour 10 k Fun Run- A widepread effort and campaign to help the Amgen Tour of California continue to be a successful and integral part of our Santa Rosa community. For walkers or runners, the fun run starts on Third Street (@ B St.) in the heart of downtown Santa Rosa and follows a six mile loop along the scenic Prince Memorial Greenway before finishing near the entrance to Gateway Park, just a few short blocks from lots of fun and festivities in Old Court House Square. Every Sunday Night – West End DJ Katie Vrooman has a new specialty radio show called  “Great Dames, Vintage Chicks,” a collection of torch singers, big band singers and jazz vocalists from the 1930’s- 1960’s. Katie hand selects all the music from the show and talks about it as well. You can also hear Katie on Monday- Friday during mid-day- But the Sunday night show (10 p.m. to midnight) is about female singers who “carry the torch”. The KRUSH 95.9
