First Day of Spring! March still offers lots of opportunities to celebrate Women’s History Month, listen to music and even practice Qigong. Photos of the W. E. Spring Meeting have been put into our gallery- check them out. (See link below).  

March 21st- April 18th- New Qigong Class- Flying Crane Qigong- utilize movement, breath and visualization to train one’s energy or Qi. Mar 23rd – Apr 7th Tennessee Menagerie: A Evening with the Women of Tennessee Williams.  In this new visit with the female characters of one of America’s greatest playwrights we see glimpses into William’s own life as a son to a single mother and brother to a mentally disabled sister. The female characters in his early one act plays went on to mature into the most powerful matriarchs, sexually repressed ingenues, and tragic female victims of the American stage. March 28th, Wednesday – Baby Loves Disco    What is Baby Loves Disco? Post nap­time, pre-dinner fun? The hippest night clubs are transformed into child proof dis­cos for tod­dlers, pre-schoolers and par­ents look­ing for a break from their rou­tine . Baby loves disco is an after­noon dance party and com­mu­nity event fea­tur­ing real music from the 70s, & 80s guar­an­teed to get those lit­tle booties mov­ing and grooving. West Ender Sari Segale wins WGLI Poetry contest.  Speaking of women in the arts, the Women’s Global Leadership Initiative held a poetry contest, “Celebrating Her-Story,” in honor of this year’s Women’s History Month. Writers from all across the Sonoma County were asked to craft poems, which personally or universally reflect what it means to be a woman.  Sari’s poem, “Tearing the Veils” was recognized as the best crafted—that of a very talented poet. Artists and Performers in the West End- Our neighborhood is home to many creative people. For an example, a singer-songwriter (Ken Risling) was spotted on a recent day at DeMeo Park. Ken says he was driving by the park and was inspired to stop and work on a song he is composing.

Arbor Day at DeTurk Round Barn

Celebrate Arbor Day and Luther Burbank’s Birthday right in the neighborhood. This event is on Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon so there’s two opportunities for you to enjoy the performance. (More details listed below.) 

March 7th, Wednesday AND on March 8th , Friday- Luther Burbank’s Birthday and Arbor Day! On two different dates, enjoy the interactive performance of “Trail of Trees” presented by educational entertainer Tim Womick. Both performances take place at the beautiful historical DeTurk Round Barn. Weather permitting we will plant a tree  after March 8th performance in honor of Arbor day. Free! 6th Street Undercrossing The 6th Street Undercrossing project is estimated to start on March 14, 2012 and will take an anticipated 26 weeks to complete. The constructions plans include the roadway, curb and gutter, ADA sidewalks, pedestrian scale lighting, bike lanes, traffic signal improvements and striping. Speaking of Arbor Day- FYI. Reported by a neighbor on Feburary 29th- “Vandals just cut a big tree down on the dirt/ rustic Santa Rosa path between Pierson n Dutton right behind my house. I left my place at 4:30 went to stony point, heard it fall maybe five minutes before we got home @5… Group of teens were there, but said they just got there… I called the srpd and they said ‘maybe someone would check it out’ Someone’s around with chainsaw? Pretty disgusting. Helen”

Celebrate Women at 6th St. Playhouse

Spring has sprung at the 6th Street Playhouse. The 6th Street Playhouse has announced special event presentations marking National Women’s History Month. The myriad talents of women in Sonoma County are highlighted in three special events and a new stage play will take a special look at female characters. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” opens March 9th.  

National Women’s History Month events at 6th Street Playhouse include:

~ “Under the Influence of Tennessee’s Women” 5 p.m. Sunday, March 18th – Studio Theatre.  Women’s History Month will be celebrated at 6th Street Playhouse. Over 30 local women artists reflect on the characters of Tennessee Williams through their paintings and sculptures. This reception and art show features guest speaker KRCB Radio FM Program Director, Robin Pressman. Free admission.

~ “The Tennessee Menagerie: An Evening with the Women of Tennessee Williams” March 23th to April 7th, 2012 – Studio Theatre (Performance times available on the 6SP website) This new stage play is the center piece of National Women’s History Month activities at 6th Street Playhouse. Co-conceived by Artistic Director, Craig A. Miller and 6th Street Playhouse Dramaturge, Lennie Dean “The Tennessee Menagerie” peeks into the life and mind of the American playwright as it re-introduces audiences to his memorable female characters with scenes and monologues by Williams. Tickets $10 to $25.

The cast is led by 6th Street Playhouse  2012 Distinguished Guest Artist – actor of stage, film and television,  Charles Siebert as Big Daddy. Sexual desire and repression, death and greed cast a somber mood on the occasion of Big Daddy’s 65th birthday celebration and threaten to destroy a wealthy, but dysfunctional Southern family in Tennessee Williams’ 1955 Pulitzer Prize winning drama. Revelations about alcoholic son Brick and his sexually frustrated wife, Maggie are at the heart of this story. Family dynamics are further strained when Big Daddy’s terminal illness is revealed and brother Gooper and his wife Mae contrive to gain control of the family inheritance.

DeTurk Park Recycle Station- Conservation Corps of North Bay helps at risk youth get their lives back on track with a year’s worth of job training, work experience along with an education to get a GED or H. S. Diploma. This is especially wonderful because some of the Corpsmembers and staff call the West End Home. CCNB build, distribute and maintain all recycling drop off stations. They will also pick up, on a regular basis, all aluminum, glass, plastic containers and recyclable paper and cardboard deposited in the bins. 6th St. Playhouse – enjoy live theater

In the first days of February, final rehearsals are underway in the Studio Theatre for “Proof.” Opening Feb. 10, this 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner combines mystery and suspense with good old-fashioned storytelling when a troubled young woman discovers a revolutionary mathematical breakthrough. West End neighbor Alan Kaplan stars as the young woman’s father.

Crime Alert:

Another Garage Intruder- From a Hewett Street Neighbor:  Just wanted to alert the neighborhood that someone was in our unlocked garage while we were home sometime Thursday night, and probably early Friday morning. We heard a strange noise outside around 9:30 Thursday night and we checked the yard but didn’t see anything. Then at  5:30am we saw that our shop lights were on and the side door was wide open. We think someone knocked over a bike and got scared and left because so far we haven’t seen anything missing. Remember this also happened on W. 6th Street in December- so let’s make sure our garages are locked.

CAT FOUND:  Black short hair, Neutered male, very friendly at 124 W. 6th Street. Call (707) 318- 2853  He is extraordinarily sweet and loving.  If his owner is not found by the end of this month, I will need to take him in to animal control, where he will most likely be euthanized.  (since he is black, older, and has medical issues).

The West End Learning Curve

We can all learn something and luckily there’s opportunities for personal growth and learning right here in the neighborhood. Take an acting class, practice Qigong in the DeTurk Round Barn, teach your dog some manners . There’s also AWESOME classes at Chop’s… but you gotta be a teen. Start out the new year by learning something new!

6th Street‘s School of Drama offers a wide variety of classes designed to introduce and enrich skills.  Students can build upon their skills from class to class and join at any level.  All classes meet in the 6th Street Playhouse building, located at 52 W. 6th Street.  Spring Session I: January 9th – March 3rd or Spring Session II: March 26th – May 26rd.
