Three events you will want to take note of on March 17th- 1) The official re-dedication of Maverick’s Plaque at DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park 2) The Grand Opening of the DeTurk Round Barn and 3) The West End Neighborhood Association Spring Meeting at the DeTurk Round Barn.

3 P.M. Re-dedication of Maverick plaque at DeTurk Dog Park- Maverick was the first So. Co. Sheriff’s K9 killed in the line of duty. On July 15, 2000 the original plaque was unveiled by Maverick’s owner/handler T. J. Van Bebber. In 2010, the entire park and barn went through a major renovation- a new plaque will be unveiled at the new dog park.

Interesting, but poignant  West End lore: Did you know that every year on the day of Maverick’s death that flowers are placed at the plaque by the family? This year, the plaque was not there but Maverick was still remembered.

A historic restoration! Another West End historic home renewal is happening on the corner of Decker and Dutton. This house has had a long, checkered past- the new owners are carefully renovating this little beauty.

Decker house looking fine!

Recent Home Sales: With the real estate market in flux and a West End landlord who has found it necessary to sell several properties- there’s lots of activity. Yes, there has been “flipping” -homes bought by investors, quickly beautified for resale (often without benefit of  permit one suspects ) but the end result may be new West End owners/residents who can enjoy downtown living. Here’s a few recent sales: Nov 28th- 135 W. 7th Street; Dec 12- 225 W. 8th St. $322,000; December 5, 107 Decker $170,000.

Ring of Fire: The Music of  Johnny Cash- Opens this Friday! 6th Street Playhouse

West End Carolers on video. The weather foiled the plans of the West End Carolers visiting the hood- but this a short video from their performance at the Toad in the Hold. Click here! Boyce Street was treated to another wonderful group of carolers, in spite of the rain. Thanks Paul and Veronica for spreading cheer.

It’s not finished yet, but here is a tantalizing glimpse of the DeTurk Round Barn. It is hoped that the project will complete is the next few weeks… but the wait will be worth it. Thanks to Rich Hovden for allowing us to take a peek!

A few highlights: The amazing floor is made of recycled shipping crates and the only source of heat is through the floor. The interior walls were left original to pay homage to the historic use of the barn. The building now boasts a catering kitchen, bathrooms, an elevator, 3 stairways and a high tech audio/visual display. The ceiling has a large fan that circulates the air and the skylights open for temperature control. The exterior of the barn will be highlighted with uplights and the surrounding park will also be lighted.

The DeTurk Round Barn and Park project started this year in April and it’s anticipated that it might be finished before Christmas. Here’s an update:

Dog Park: The Dog park has been completed and is open. A new Maverick Plaque will be installed. The gate that was not staying closed has been repaired. Unfortunately, the beautiful green grass has turned into a muddy mess. Several dog park users have wanted to know who they could make comments to about the mud. Send them to Rich Hovden, City of S. R.

Park Landscaping: The sod and  plants have been put in. You may have noticed the use of grasses and even grapevines.  The DeTurk Vintage Rose garden has been replanted in their new location. Gina designed the plan for the roses based on their color, type and size. It will be gorgeous.

Barn Exterior: The exterior is nearly finished and only has a “punch list” for a few final items. The lighting is working but has not been turned on yet. No one will confirm a date for this as of yet.

The Exterior is almost finished 11-15

Barn Interior: The interior has a little way to go. The wood flooring starts this week downstairs. The light fixtures are being put in upstairs. It will have to be completely finished prior to final notice. They anticipate around the 21st of December but of course, things happen and that may change.

The DeTurk Round Barn Project is still moving forward. The Dog park was opened July 16th and the Barn itself was settled back down on it’s new foundation July 19th.  At this point, they are continuing to work on the wood framing. The old roof is now being removed in preparation for the new roof. The new sidewalk and corner at Donahue and W. 8th Street is now in progress. The hope is that the project will be finished by the end of October- but this is subject to change due to varied circumstance.

The West End Neighborhood Association is planning a special event in celebration of the finished project. More information as it becomes available.

The West End is a busy place- there’s always lots to do. Here’s a run down of recent events:

The West End to Hopmonk Full Moon ride was a great success -with over 20 riders enjoying the lovely weather. The group met at DeMeo Park  and then rode to the Hopmonk via the Joe Rodota trail. After a bit of socializing and sustenance (aka beverage and munchies), the group rode back under a full moon back to West End. Some folks continued onto Railroad Square, ultimately ending up at Starks for a debriefing.  See the ride video- Click here! For more photos Click Here!

Leadership Institute for Ecology and Economy had their June Fellows Happy Hour at DeMeo park- The Leadership Institute, dedicated to ensuring a sustainable future,  trains people to be more effective leaders and to educate community leaders and the public to understand that the future of our economy and quality of life are dependent on each other. The Fellows of the Institute were introduced to the West End- a downtown neighborhood with small, efficient homes easily accessible to local businesses. The event was sponsored by  Thomas & Co. Consulting, Allen Thomas is a 2003 graduate of the institute. They were also treated to beer brewed by the West End’s Dave Drake, yummy appetizers made by Andrew Zarrillow and Burning Hawk Wines poured by Nick Papadopoulos and Scott Johnson.  Leadership Institute

303 Hewett Street- Wow! Check out the rehabilitation of the historic cottage located at 303 Hewett Street. This 19th Century Vernacular Box house, built before 1904, had fallen into a state of disrepair. It was sold- and the new owner has brought it back to life. Great care and attention to historically correct detail were made by the project manager- “My Handyman” John Moorhead (236-2577).  This is a living example of the benefit of living in a historic district.  This house would not look the same if it was repaired with T111 siding! (Note: the vinyl windows were added before the rehab)
