May is National Bike Month. Santa Rosa celebrates in grand style by hosting the 2012 Amgen Tour of CA Overall Start and Stage 1 finish in downtown. There will be lots of events leading up to the race too. A sample of events are posted below- complete event list can be found at http://www.santarosa2012.com
Don’t think that West Enders just celebrate the bike one month out of the year! We happen to have an impressive selection of bike-minded creative geniuses that reside in the West End. This is what they are up to this month:

West Ender Skye Barnett and David Farish (Not a West Ender… but definitely admired in the West End) have created the “Spruce Deuce” a marvelous contraption that will certainly be a star in the 44th Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race on May 26- 28th. What is this race about? Wild and crazy people-powered sculptures will traverse land, sand, and water to travel from the Arcata Plaza (10 a.m. viewing, noon start Saturday) to the finish line in the Victorian Village of Ferndale (finishing any time after noon Monday). It’s all for the glory! Good luck Guys!

The Spruce Deuce- Kinetic Art

West Ender Klaus Rappensperger and the Fun Bike Unicorn Club (other members include Joshua Thwaites, Arn Anderson, Todd Barricklow & Joey Castor) are bringing their Death Defying Figure 8 Pedal Car Races to the 7th Annual Bay Area Maker Faire . In the spirit of healthy, and perhaps reckless, competition, the Unicorns will be shredding around the track racing not only each other, but anyone else who has brought a car to race. The rules are simple, don’t spend too much money, build it yourself, and brakes are mandatory! SCARY but exciting! Check out this video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1N-cEsRPUA

For May, 6th Street Playhouse welcomes spring and “Souvenir” ~ The musical comedy about a woman who wanted to sing in the worst way. Fair warning now….”The Producers” are coming to the West End Neighborhood in June

MAY:

June 15th to July 15th, “The Producers” Only Mel Brooks could come up with this outrageous, teeny bit offensive, off the wall story about the greatest show business scam ever. “The Producers” follows Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they sing and dance their way down Broadway waiting for a cash windfall, when their sure-to-flop, masterpiece of awfulness ~ “Springtime for Hitler” ~ turns out to be the biggest hit that ever landed on the Great White Way. Directed by Craig A. Miller. G.K. Hardt Theatre

BoDean Company Inc. is asking the City of Santa Rosa to allow the installation of three storage silos (in addition to the one existing silo) and other improvements. This is an important meeting as this operation is in the midst of our neighborhood and the downtown.

Video- An interesting look at the BoDean operation

April 26th, Thursday- Public Hearing for BoDean Company. Location: City Hall Chamber, City Hall, 100 Santa Rosa Ave. Time: 4 p.m.

The BoDean Company viewed from Cleveland Ave.

A request has been made to the City by the BoDean Asphalt Plant (located on College Avenue just west of Cleveland Avenue) to add three new silos for asphalt storage – each over 7 stories tall. Concerns of residents living near the BoDean facility are based on noise, dust, traffic, visual blight and air pollution currently produced by this plant. Additional silos don’t address these issues and encourage this facility to continue and expand this business in a residential area.

The purpose of the public hearing will be to receive public comment and recommendations prior to the Planning Commission acting on the requested application. If you cannot attend, you are encourage to subit written comments and recommendations prior to the public hearing. Comments and questions may be directed to Bill Rose, City Planner, Dept. of Community Development, City of S. R. 100 Santa Rosa Ave., Room 3, Santa Rosa CA 95404  Phone: 707-543-3253  Email: wrose@srcity.org

Finally! Santa Rosa is finalizing plans to complete the undercrossing on Sixth Street. The project is anticipated to take 26 weeks, with an estimated start date of May 14, 2012. Once completed, it will create a critical link for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles to the downtown area and Railroad Square Historic District, transit mall, and SMART station.
