Be aware that the City of S. R. Utilities Dept. is conducting smoke testing. The Public notice was sent out to neighbors and while it does mention that there’s the slight possibility of smoke in your house- It doesn’t mention that there will be smoke streaming from the top of the houses! This happened today on W. 8th Street and it looks very alarming.
For more info www.srcity.org/smoketest or contact Utilities Dept. 543-4200

Light Reduction Program- Several neighbors have suggested that we turn on our front lights to combat the changes that the reduction of lights might bring to the neighborhood. The Neighborhood Watch Program has always suggested that light is a deterrent to crime. Porch lights can be put on timer, they can also be motion activated and, of course, there’s also solar lights.

Two new items of Neighborhood interest:

Break in at Western Farm Saturday Night.  Utz-  SRPD the Police Dog takes care of business.

On Saturday, April 17, 2010, at approximately 10:40 p.m., Santa Rosa Police Officers responded to Western Farms Center on West 7th Street for a silent alarm. Officers arrived and established a perimeter at which time officers saw movement inside the upstairs office area.  Shortly thereafter, officers entered the business with the assistance of a police K9, Utz. Once at the stairwell, the officer provided notification to anyone upstairs that a police K9 was going to be deployed. The suspect, Michael Iervolino, an 18 year old Santa Rosa resident, immediately complied and was taken into custody without incident. Iervolino was subsequently booked into the Sonoma County Jail for Burglary.

NW Santa Rosa to be home for all  Medical Cannabis Dispensaries

On April 19th, the City Manager approved a  2nd Medical Cannabis Dispensary Permit in NW Santa Rosa. The City of Santa Rosa that, by ordinance only allows 2 medical marijuana facilities within the City, has just approved the second facilty.  It will be located at 1061 North Dutton Ave. – right next to homes.  It is also located within 2 miles of the only other location which is also located in NW Santa Rosa.  This facility was approved in spite of many letters from residents who cited existing problems in the area due to an over concentration of services. There was also a  recent a robbery and assault at the County Approved Medical Marijuana Facility on Santa Rosa Avenue.

Believe it or not! The DeTurk Round Barn Project is at hand. The construction fencing is planned to start going up this week, with basic facilities for the contractor in place by next week. The project will start in earnest by the end of next week.

Two important issues to the West End: Yes, the dog park will be functioning at all times during this project and yes, the West End Historic Rose Garden will be removed but replaced in a new spot.  More info as it comes available.
