This weekend- cleanup, art, music and more

Whew! The weather forecast for tomorrow’s clean up is sunny with a high of 71 Degrees. The Cleanup starts at 10 a.m. followed with a BBQ. There’s 3 other excellent suggestions for your weekend- so go out there and enjoy!

Tonight! April 13th, Friday- 1st Annual Drawing Rally. A unique opportunity to experience the process of creation, and to purchase a work of art minutes after it’s completion. The Drawing Rally is an action-packed spectacle you won’t want to miss with 10-15 artists drawing LIVE simultaneously! Some of the West End’s favorite artists such as (but not limited to): Todd Barricklow, Joey Castor, Mica Jennings, Klaus Rappensperger & Wil Smith will be there. MUSIC. DRINKS. April 14^th, Saturday- DeMeo Park Clean up. Time for Spring Cleaning! The West End Neighborhood and Chop’s Interact Club will join forces to tidy up DeMeo Park. We plan to trim the bushes, spread bark, weed and groom the bocce court. We will then celebrate our clean park with a BBQ. Please bring your gardening tools (remember to mark them for easy identification), gloves and energy. Everyone is welcome. Hope to see you there! Want to go outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather? If you have been to DeMeo Park or down the Prince Memorial Greenway you may have noticed that both of them need a little bit of work. You can help make a difference- we have a DeMeo Park cleanup scheduled on April 14th, Saturday and as always First Saturday Cleanup will meet tomorrow (the first Saturday- April 7th) to clean up the Prince Memorial Greenway. Join in with your neighbors and help us clean up!

April 7th, Saturday- First SATURDAY Cleanup (ages 6 and up welcome). Join neighbors and youth in the care of Prince Memorial Greenway the first Saturday of every month. Clean-up supplies provided. DeMeo Park and DeTurk Round Barn Park both have new recycling bins. These bins are from Conservation Corps North Bay. This nonprofit helps at risk youth (ages 18-28) get their lives back on track with a year’s worth of job training and work experience along with an education to get a GED and High School Diploma. News from the City Manager:

Prince Gateway Park & Greenway is a Community Treasure

Recently, this treasured park and greenway has been the site of extensive graffiti and vandalism. This has been met with shock, dismay, and anger by the community. The extent of the damage is taking some time and expense to clean up and repair, but it is underway. ArtStart students have stepped up to begin repairs of tile work on the salmon statue and are working on plans to replace the dragon mural in a more durable form and also refurbish benches; City crews and a contractor are working to clean the area of debris and blast graffiti markings from the stone and cement work; police and fire are stepping up patrols and interventions to seek places for transient campers to find better shelter than the public park and nab the vandals. Unfortunately, due to the extent of the damage the city does not have sufficient funds to completely restore all of the fixtures right away and may need to re-think the design to select items that are more tamper-proof. Lighting fixtures have been torn apart and stripped of metal materials. This gateway park and trail serves as a welcoming place for neighbors and visitors alike and we want to make sure it is a safe and beautiful place to enjoy. We do need help from the community to be our “eyes, ears, and, on occasion, elbow-grease” to keep it clean, green, and safe. We continue to seek volunteer groups to adopt segments of our public trails to do just that. Interested? To sign up, contact the City at

Graffiti Abatement Gets Help

Graffiti is blight on our neighborhoods and is most effectively controlled if removed immediately. If it appears on your property, clean it up now. If it appears in public areas, contact the City to find ways to remove it. While City park crews have just one employee working everyday to remove graffiti from public parks and trails throughout the community, the police department works on graffiti abatement as a property crime and seeks partnerships with neighborhoods to rid the community of such unsightly and harmful vandalism. The abatement program will be staffed temporarily with a Field and Evidence Technician who started work this week to maintain the good work and continuity of the program. Volunteers are engaging in graffiti abatement and the program is up and running as it has for several years. The department will be hiring full time staff for the graffiti abatement program once some internal reorganization of jobs is completed and that hire should be made by early summer. April 7th, Saturday- Young Reporter Workshop for 7th and 8th graders. This workshop will introduce the students to county government, promote literacy and civic engagement and it will boost writing skills and reading comprehension. All five Sonoma County Supervisors will be attending the workshop and will be interviewed by the students. The students will then write an article based on what they learned from the Supervisors. March 31^st, Saturday- Earth Hour 2012. The largest environmental event in history- millions of people switch off their lights for one hour. West Ender Russ Scarola and the Share Exchange host this free downtown event. Activities include: 7PM laying out a giant Earth out of natural materials; 8:30PM lighting candles across the “continents” and share stories/poems/songs around a makeshift campfire. West Ender Sari Segale wins WGLI Poetry contest. Speaking of women in the arts, the Women’s Global Leadership Initiative held a poetry contest, “Celebrating Her-Story,” in honor of this year’s Women’s History Month. Writers from all across the Sonoma County were asked to craft poems, which personally or universally reflect what it means to be a woman. Sari’s poem, “Tearing the Veils” was recognized as the best crafted—that of a very talented poet. She read her work at a poetry reading March 15th on SRJC’s Santa Rosa campus. Artists and Performers in the West End- Our neighborhood is home to many creative people. For an example, a singer-songwriter (Ken Risling) was spotted on a recent day at DeMeo Park. Ken says he was driving by the park and was inspired to stop and work on a song he is composing.

Gaye LeBaron: Discussions over Santa Rosa Plaza nothing new

For over 35 years, many citizens have felt that downtown Santa Rosa has been divided by monolith called the Santa Rosa Plaza. Recently, the mall owner/manager Simon Property Group (aka the largest real estate company in the U.S.) while going through the City’s Design review process completely refuses to improve the situation in anyway. Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board – The S. R. City Council is seeking applications from interested citizens to fill one at-large position representing the Senior Community on the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board. BPAB provides City staff with input on the type of pedestrian and bicycle transportation projects that should be considered for commuting and what priority those projects should have. Board meets on the third Thursday of every month from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the City Hall Annex, 90 Santa Rosa Avenue. First Saturday Clean Up a Success- fifty volunteers turned out on the March 3, 2012, First Saturday clean up on Santa Rosa Creek along the Prince Memorial Greenway. The creek and Olive Park look a lot better after the efforts of neighbors along with youth and parents of Santa Rosa Mothers Club, Rincon Valley Middle School, Willowside Middle School, Boy Scout Troop 509, Club Scout Pack 20, Cub Scout Pack 58, American Heritage Girls Troop 58 and Club Scout Pack 134.Remember the next “First Saturday clean ups” are on April 7th and May 5th. 6^th Street Undercrossing The 6^th Street Undercrossing project is estimated to start on March 14, 2012 and will take an anticipated 26 weeks to complete. The constructions plans include the roadway, curb and gutter, ADA sidewalks, pedestrian scale lighting, bike lanes, traffic signal improvements and striping. The project includes 6^th Street between Morgan and Davis. Celebrate Women at 6th St. Playhouse

Spring has sprung at the 6th Street Playhouse. The 6th Street Playhouse has announced special event presentations marking National Women’s History Month. The myriad talents of women in Sonoma County are highlighted in three special events and a new stage play will take a special look at female characters. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” opens March 9^th.

National Women’s History Month events at 6th Street Playhouse include:

~ “Under the Influence of Tennessee’s Women” 5 p.m. Sunday, March 18th – Studio Theatre. Women’s History Month will be celebrated at 6th Street Playhouse. Over 30 local women artists reflect on the characters of Tennessee Williams through their paintings and sculptures. This reception and art show features guest speaker KRCB Radio FM Program Director, Robin Pressman. Free admission.

~ “The Tennessee Menagerie: An Evening with the Women of Tennessee Williams” March 23th to April 7th, 2012 – Studio Theatre (Performance times available on the 6SP website) This new stage play is the center piece of National Women’s History Month activities at 6th Street Playhouse. Co-conceived by Artistic Director, Craig A. Miller and 6th Street Playhouse Dramaturge, Lennie Dean “The Tennessee Menagerie” peeks into the life and mind of the American playwright as it re-introduces audiences to his memorable female characters with scenes and monologues by Williams. Tickets $10 to $25.

~ “Taste: A Wine Country Pygmalion” 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31 – Studio Theatre
Bronwen Shears directs this staged reading of “Taste: A Wine Country Pygmalion,” a new play by Jody Gehrman (author of “The Ticking Clock Project”). Free admission.

~ “Showcase: Women in the Arts” 7 p.m. Sunday, April 1 – Studio Theatre
This special performance event honors 10 female artists, singers, poets, actresses and dancers who have contributed to the rich, cultural life of Sonoma County. $10 per person.

”Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” March 9th to March 25th on it’s main stage in the G.K. Hardt Theatre. The cast is led by 6th Street Playhouse 2012 Distinguished Guest Artist – actor of stage, film and television, Charles Siebert as Big Daddy. Sexual desire and repression, death and greed cast a somber mood on the occasion of Big Daddy’s 65th birthday celebration and threaten to destroy a wealthy, but dysfunctional Southern family in Tennessee Williams’ 1955 Pulitzer Prize winning drama. Revelations about alcoholic son Brick and his sexually frustrated wife, Maggie are at the heart of this story. Family dynamics are further strained when Big Daddy’s terminal illness is revealed and brother Gooper and his wife Mae contrive to gain control of the family inheritance.

Show content varies with emphasis on the stars, constellations, planets, and other interesting facts in or about the sky that night. DeTurk Park Recycle Station- Conservation Corps of North Bay helps at risk youth get their lives back on track with a year’s worth of job training, work experience along with an education to get a GED or H. S. Diploma. This is especially wonderful because some of the Corpsmembers and staff call the West End Home. CCNB build, distribute and maintain all recycling drop off stations. They will also pick up, on a regular basis, all aluminum, glass, plastic containers and recyclable paper and cardboard deposited in the bins. Whew! The weather forecast for tomorrow’s clean up is sunny with a high of 71 Degrees. The Cleanup starts at 10 a.m. followed with a BBQ. There’s 3 other excellent suggestions for your weekend- so go out there and enjoy!

Welcome April! Easter is this Sunday and we will still have a West End Small Dog Hour and West End Poodle Party at DeTurk Round Barn Dog park. We’ll have a photo station set up for you to take pictures so bring your doggies in all their Easter finery.
