Future Cyclist events to put on your calendar-

April 25th, Sunday- Breakaway Ride presented by SPECIALIZED. Amateur Cyclists have the opportunity to ride two of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California Routes- Registration now open. Three distances will be offered for each ride to accommodate various skill levels; the longest distance covers the same route that the pros will ride (an entire stage). Riders will be chip timed and supported, with a maximum of 3,500 riders per event.  Breakaway Ride

May 17th, Monday: Stage 2- Davis to Santa Rosa  AMGEN  Tour of California returns for the 5th consecutive year to Santa Rosa. Festivities start at noon in Courthouse Square and will continue into the night. If you missed the Railroad Square Mardi Gras parade, don’t fret… there’s still more to do this week!

The Mardi Gras Parade was full of enthusiasm, laughter and music. It was a bit like First Night- when strangers met in the street to celebrate in the downtown. The Last Day Saloon’s featured act for the evening, Rythmntown Jive led the jubilant crowd through the welcoming restaurants (except one uncelebratory coffee shop who had posted guards!). February 21st, Sunday- Two events

3 p.m. Pug play day at De Turk Round Barn Dog Park. Watch playful Pugs cavort and socialize! De Turk Round Barn Dog Park is a fenced-in, leash free area. A water faucet is available at the park to keep your dog hydrated. Please observe park rules and regulations so that this will be an enjoyable experience for all. Please no food or snacks within the fenced area for the safety of our pugs as well as other dogs that may visit the park after us. And, of course, any friendly dogs/breeds are always welcome. Lots to do this week!

February 16, Tuesday 5:30 p.m.- Celebrate Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday in Railroad Square. It all starts with a parade around Railroad Square. Parade starts at the Last Day Saloon at 5:30 led by Rythm Town Jive.  Enjoy New Orleans R& B, Food and drink. $7 advance tickets or $10 on day of show. Even though the skies are gray, there’s always activities, meetings and events within walking distance of the West End. A few items for your February calendar:

Street Sweeper- City of Santa Rosa street sweeping happens the first friday of every month. Accumulated leaves and debris can create havoc with street drainage- so move your cars off the curb the night before or early morning. Be a good neighbor-If you have a non-working, unregistered or a car that has been parked on the street over 72 hours- S. R. City Code states that these cars are subject to removal by the Police Department. So move your car! Neighborhood Services brochure- click here!

SMART Rail station workshop- February 11th  7 p.m. at CHOPS 509 Adams Street. Smart station design consultants will present initial concepts about stations and seek your feedback. For more info SMART Feb 11- station workshop

West End neighbor, Tim Sarter plays bass and acts in the new show, Hank Williams: Lost Highway. If you haven’t had a chance to see a show at the 6th Street Playhouse, this would be an excellent time to do so!

Christmas Tree Collection Christmas trees are recycled into mulch and compost. Please take advantage of one of the three convenient recycling methods available to you.Place your unflocked tree in your yard waste container and place on the curb on your regular yard waste collection day. The tree must be CUT TO FIT inside the container (4 foot or less sections, please). Trees sticking out of the container can interfere with the lifting arm on the truck. Please remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments, and stands. For more info Click here!

Hope you are enjoying the Holidays!

Friday, December 18th- 6 p.m. to 8:30 3rd Annual West End Caroling Night. Our roaming carolers will tour through the neighborhood and then end up for a potluck holiday party at Robin’s house (127 W. 6th Street). The ending party is BYOB and potluck items can be dropped off ahead of time if you don’t want to go caroling with your casserole. We will do the last round of carols at Robin’s house and expect to be back at her house around 7:30 or 8 p.m.

More Ham for the Holidays- 6th Street Playhouse announced three new performance dates for the new, hilarious holiday comedy “Ham for the Holidays”.  Thursday, Dec. 17, Saturday, December 19th and Sunday December 20th. Special thanks to Jennifer Watson of 10th Street, for delivering a petition to the S. R. City Council requesting that portions of the West End be re designated so that single family homes are permitted. Jennifer will keep everyone up to date as this plan moves forward.

Railroad Square Crime Alert: Historic Railroad Square has been hit by a series of crimes. Many of the businesses have been vandalized or burglarized in the last few weeks. There have been windows etched, rocks thrown through windows, massive graffiti, theft and burglaries. . If you are in Railroad Square, especially late at night or early morning, keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity. These are our local, independent  merchants and they need our help.

If you want to give input to SMART about their rail car’s amenities- attend the Wednesday night meeting. No need to travel far for holiday events… just walk out your front door.

December 9, Wednesday 7 p.m. at CHOPS, 509 Adams Street -SMART Vehicle Workshop. December 12, Saturday at 6 p.m.- Memorial Hospice Tree lighting ceremony in Depot Park , Railroad Square. Music, sing-alongs, candlelight, and remembrances — a celebration of life. An inspirational event for the Santa Rosa community that takes place in Historic Railroad Square.

December Holiday Show (Time varies for more info- Click here!) at 6th Street Playhouse, 52 W. 6th Street.  “Ham for the Holidays” Set on Christmas Eve in 1939, a group of actors who work at a small radio station await the arrival of Orson Welles. Hilarity ensues through a long, blizzardy night toward Christmas morning in this new family-friendly seasonal treat sprinkled with holiday music from the era.

There is no shortage of activities this weekend.

December 5th, 7 p.m. The Last Day Saloon, 120 5th Street at Davis St., will have their 37th annual “Toys for Kids Drive” for the S. R. Firefighters.  There will be 2 great bands ( The Manzanita Acoustic Band & Frobeck) , comedians (Phat Joe Mendosa & Mike Betancourt), a D. J. (DJ on Que), dancing, raffles and food. December 3rd -6th  The North Bay Film and Art Collective, 99 6th Street, continues it’s Global Lens Series. Neighborhood Watch Crime Alert:

Neighborhood Watch Leader for the Upper West End area reports: There were two cars with smashed windows along Ripley Street this week. These may or may not have been reported to SRPD. The first was Ripley @ 11th the night of 11/30.The second was last night 12/2 along Ripley @ 10th (I think along the northeast side of the street). If I learn more from neighbors I will pass it along. I just called non-emergency SRPD and explained the situation and requested a dispatch for tonight (if available) to check on Ripley Street.                 Jennifer Watson 10th St

Starting this Saturday- Free Railroad Square Holiday Horse & Carriage Rides: Every weekend until Christmas Eve, weather permitting, leaving from Depot Park. Wrap in a blanket and trot through Holiday Square. A family holiday tradition sponsored by the Historic Railroad Square Association for 22 years. Recent crime in St. Rose Neighborhood- On Monday, Nov. 23rd, the garage at 400 Lincoln Street (corner of Lincoln & Washington) was burglarized and an high-end mountain bike was taken. Most likely, this event occurred during daylight hours. Please keep a vigilant eye out for any suspicious activity in the neighborhood and report promptly to the Santa Rosa Police Dept. at 528-5222. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911 immediately.
