West End Bocce and Movie Night on Friday

Ahh Summer in the West End! On Friday night, make your way down to DeMeo Park for an incredible evening of community fun. By the way, the DeTurk Round Barn Dog Park is now open. Check it out!

West End Summer Bocce- Every Friday at 6 p.m. at DeMeo Park. Join your friends and neighbors at beautiful DeMeo Park. Bring food and drinks to share. This is an all age, dog friendly event. To keep the event enjoyable and comfortable for all- please remember to observe Park rules: No glass, dogs on leashes. The West End Neighborhood Association has procured a Special Alcohol Permit and Lavatory for West End Summer Bocce. Wear layers for chilly nights.

West End Movie Night at DeMeo Park- Join your neighbors this Friday night at ~9:00 pm (when it’s dark enough) to watch the movie The Parent Trap (1998) in DeMeo Park (since the DeTurk Roundbarn is unavailable). Bring a blanket & such to sit on and keep warm with.. We’ll have free popcorn to share. (See these links re: the movie: details and parental advisory.)

West End- DeTurk update, D’Argenzio Winery

DeTurk Round Barn Project Update: At this point, the Dog Park is scheduled for Occupancy on 7-16-10. The landscape contractor has continued the sod grow-in and the General contractor will finalize items with the dog park such as the fence painting and dog water source. Highlights for the next few weeks include: Dog Park 1) Painting of fence 2) Verifying sod grow-in 3) Dog Park Move-In 4) Existing Dog Park Change to contractor Round Barn 1) 3rd concrete pour 2) Setting Building Down 3) Continued wood framing 4) Roof Demolition 5) New Roof Offsite Improvements 1) Start work on sidewalk etc. at Donahue & W. 8th. This is now scheduled for 7-19-10.

Summer Nights in Railroad Square – was a wonderful event with great music, art, food, wine and friends. Many neighbors attended the festivities and then strolled back to DeMeo park for Bocce and the West End Movie night at DeMeo Park. To see photos click here!

DeTurk Round Barn lifted, Lucy at Depot

The DeTurk Round Barn was lifted this morning.

DeTurk Round Barn It is an amazing feat when you consider how long that barn has rested in the same place. The process was smooth and gentle on the barn. Great job by Montgomery Heavy Hauling and Structure Relocation and GCCI- The General Contractor over the entire project. GCCI is a local Santa Rosa based, family-run company. This morning, there were generations of the Gentry family on hand to see this memorable event. Thanks for taking such good care of our treasured barn!

Lucy at the Depot- Lucy Van Pelt is now around town joining Charlie Brown, Snoopy “Joe Cool” and Woodstock!! This past weekend, 30 Lucy statues were painted by local Sonoma County artists. The event was open to the public to watch the artists work to create their vision of Lucy. The statues are now being placed around Santa Rosa and will be on display throughout the summer. Two of them are at the Visitor’s Center- Depot in Railroad Square. A map of statue locations will be inserted into the Press Democrat or can be picked up at the Visitor’s Center.

West End Wild Turkey? Spotted yesterday- it spend a little time in Railroad Square and then strolled down W. 6th Street. Guess everyone wants to live in the West End.

DeTurk Update, Crime alert & Entertainment

By now, many of you have noticed the steel beams sticking out of the windows of the DeTurk Round Barn, this is in preparation of the barn being lifted. It will be an exciting step of the project and may happen on Friday. The sod will finally be placed in the dog park and work will continue on the barn while the dog park completes its “grow in”. Tentative Dog Park opening is July 15, 2010- but everything is subject to change due to varied circumstances.

Project Update- In progress or planned- Dog Park: a) Tree and sod placement, b) Painting of fence c) Irrigation testing d) Benches and Final concrete work. Round Barn: a) Shoring and cribbing for barn lift b) Barn lift c) Soil Removal d) Prep for concrete slab & infrastructure. Off-Site Improvements: a) Start work on sidewalk etc. at Donahue/W. 8th.

Crime Alert-Bike stolen: Wednesday night (May 19th) one of our nice road bikes — a brown and white Jamis Aurora — was taken from behind our house at 120 9th St. Also happened at around 2AM. I called the police and they drove around the neighborhood a few minutes later with no luck. Russ Scarola

DeTurk Park, Rezoing info, Crime alert

The project continues to progress at DeTurk Round Barn & Park- The existing Dog Park will be scaled down to allow work on the Round Barn. The Barn will actually be raised in the near future.

Project Highlights: Dog Park A) Finalize fencing/painting B) Irrigation C) Lay sod D) Site Furnishings E) Grow in period (4-6 weeks) Dog Park opening tentatively set for the week of July 15th. The exisiting Dog Park be reduced for Barn construction

Crime Alert: There was an attempted break-in at 709 Davis Street- the Kid Street Learning Center building. It was last week around 2am. One of the neighbors heard a loud crash when they looked outside they saw 2 guys and a girl in the middle of the street. The police were called and a report was taken. They broke the window to the basement. Thankfully the windows are double pane and the 2nd portion wasn’t broke. I’m hopeful that the loud noise is what scared them off. Rezoning and Notice of Public Hearing questions: Many folks have had questions about the Notice of Public Hearing they received from the City of Santa Rosa. The Notice, which was mailed to 2000 individuals, was a little vague so if you have questions please contact Jessica Jones. New to You Shop gets a Face lift- The Assistance League of Sonoma County is renovating their building. The forbidding bars have been removed, the exterior and tile roof has been painted. The corner of Adams and W. 6th Street has a new, fresh look compliments of Kelly Moore Paint and Redwood Empire Painting & Decorating Contractors of America. Future improvements to doors & windows are planned. The Assistance League provides many kind and wonderful services. They also support this neighborhood in many ways. They sponsor the W. E. Clock & Farmer’s Market- Railroad Square will be installing a street clock at 4th & Wilson. The dual clock heads will face east and west. There is also talk of the S. R. DeTurk Round Barn Park Project Update

The DeTurk Round Barn project has begun in earnest. This project is scheduled to move quickly with a potential completion date this Fall. As always, this is subject to a variety of circumstances such as weather etc.

In the next two weeks you can expect: Dog Park- Grading , fence posts and panels to go up at the Dog Park. It is hoped that the new Dog Park will open (tentatively) the week of May 10th. Round Barn- the glass windows have been removed but the window spaces have been covered for protection, concrete is being removed from the interior. Rose Garden- the roses will be removed and stored until replanted.

Highlights to park improvements: Restoration of the DeTurk Round Barn. Dog Park will be more user friendly with dog entry chamber that includes a double gate, new welded wire fence will not allow small dogs escape opportunities and easier to maintain. Dog monument will be moved to inside the entry chamber. New rose garden bed gives roses a better space and improved opportunity for rose admirers. Bulletin Board will be relocated. New bike racks. Barn and park will have lighting.

The West End Neighborhood Association Spring meeting had over 70 attendees. Good meeting! There was a wealth of announcements and updates. The West End would like to thank our speakers, Supervisor Shirlee Zane and SRPD Chief Tom Schwedhelm for taking the time to meet our West End neighbors. Tonight, Santa Rosa City Council has awarded a contract for $2.1 million for the construction and rehabilitation of the DeTurk Round Barn.

March 3, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.- City of S. R. Neighborhood Meeting for New Railroad Square Project (SMART site). Meeting location: Chop’s DeMeo Teen Club, 509 Adams Street. You are invited to attend a meeting regarding the New Railroad Square Project. The project is a proposed mixed use, transit-oriented development- the complete 291,000 SF project will ultimately be developed to over 4 distinct blocks.To be discussed: A Conditional Use Permit for Alcoholic beverage sales, Outdoor dining, Restaurant serving alcohol, Residential- single family attached and parking structure abutting residential. Side show- Art of the Hand car Regatta

March 5th, Friday- Street Sweeping. Move your cars off the curb for early morning cleaning of debris and leaves. This is especially important during the rainy season.

May 1, Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.- West End Neighborhood Garage sale. It’s time for Spring Cleaning! Join your neighbors in reducing storage and making room. The garage sale will be publicized- if you would like to participate pitch in $5 to help cover the costs. Rain Day – May 8th.

May 14th, Friday 6 p.m.- West End Summer Bocce season begins. Join your friends and neighbors to dine, dish the dirt and, of course, play bocce! Bring food or drink to share. Everyone is welcomed. A good event for children and well-behaved dogs. Season ends on Sept. 17th.
