Hey Folks, this isn’t a major crime…. but be aware that there are people out there trespassing and stealing things. Neighborhood Watch means keeping your ears and eyes open and recognizing when something isn’t right…. a suspicious person or activity. Get to know your neighbors, exchange phone numbers and discuss a plan for suspicious activity. Also let your neighbors know when there are changes to your property… such as “We’ll be out of town- but you’ll see someone new in the house because we have a house setter” etc. If a crime has occurred… don’t keep it to yourself…. let neighbors know! Forewarned is forearmed.
A Boyce Street neighbor reports: Hello West End, I wanted to report a minor crime and not sure where to post this info.  My license plate was stolen on the night of July 1 from my car parked in drivewayon the 200 block of Boyce.  Reported to police but they didn’t care.  FYI in case others have similar problem.

This is an important alert for cat owners or other animals that may be exposed.

If any of you Westenders have outdoor cats, or indoor-outdoor cats, our neighbors on Seventh St just told us that three of the feral cats they have been feeding for several years have been poisoned. They come back from somewhere and die a terrible, painful death under their house. Please be aware, and watch your pets. They are apparently getting the poison from something that is attracting them. The Humane Society has been alerted, along with the SR Police. Please contact one of the agencies if you are suspicious of anything. Thank you.

This is a report from Jennifer Watson, the West End’s Neighborhood Watch coordinator in the Upper West End (North of 9th Street).  Jennifer has done an exceptional job of organizing and communicating crime reports. As neighbors, we all need to work together to be pro-active to criminal activity.  Today’s Alert:

Hi Neighbors.  Two abandoned vehicles were noticed and called-in to the SR Police Dept today (one from 10th St and one from Ripley St).  It turned out that both were reported as stolen. They were both removed (one was recovered by the owners –a bit of good news!).

If you notice a vehicle that has not moved for more than 72 hours or one that looks stolen (missing wheels, broken windows, etc), please CALL the SR Police Dept.  Let’s not let our neighborhood become a dumping ground for stolen vehicles.

To report an abandoned vehicle (no movement for 72 hours and a car you do not recognize):  Call 543-3600, press 1, and then 1 again to report a non-emergency that requires police response.  You will want a description of vehicle and the plate number. They will run the plates immediately and determine if it is stolen.  If it’s not stolen the car will be ‘noticed’ and eventually removed.  If it’s stolen SR Police will be out ASAP to recover the vehicle.

To report a stolen vehicle (car with missing wheels, broken glass, you get the idea): Call 528-5222 and you will reach non-emergency dispatch.  Provide description and plate numbers.

Hope you will all be able to attend the neighborhood meeting on Thurs, March 17, 7:00 pm at the ROUND BARN!      Best,   Jennifer 121 10th Street

Yard vandalized: On December 30th, Thursday evening someone tore up a significant amount of landscaping ( including 2 lavender plants) on the side of of a neighbor’s house (side faces Coulter St. ). They uprooted several plants then tossed them across the yard. They were clearly uprooted, so it did not look like an animal could have done it. Have any other neighbors experienced similar vandalism?

Kid Street Charter School targeted: We have had our vans broken into, gas tanks stolen, several batteries taken and our tags on our license plates taken regardless of how we slice them etc. We now keep the vans at staff homes. Check out their website for more info Kid Street Learning Center & Charter School.)

CRIME ALERT – CAR ROBBERY – Upper West End area (North of 9th)

Hi Neighbors,

Neighbor Russ Toran reports: “At 6:08 am this morning (Wed, 12/15) my car was broken into at 932 Ripley St (at the end of 11th Street.) The Sony AM/FM compact disk player was taken.  My car was locked because the alarm went off, however, there was no sign visible sign of forced entry like a broken window. They must have used those devices AAA uses when you lock your keys in the car. They went through the glovebox and the trunk. Too bad the downtown area of Santa Rosa is like this. This is the second time my car has been broken into to in the the past two years.”

If you see or hear suspicious activity in the neighborhood: Call the Police. Non-emergency 528-5222 and Emergency 911 (on Cell phones- call 528-5222 for both). Also call (or email) your neighbors to report situations or to get backup.    Let’s keep communicating to keep our neighborhood safer!

Sincerely,   Jennifer Watson, 121 10th Street, 568-3735

Awareness and communication are the two tools that we can use as neighbors to keep out neighborhood safe. The following two neighbor reports are an example of communication- the second part, of course, is to be watchful and engaged.

W. 6th Street Burglary- Neighbors Denise & Ben report that their home was burglarized.  Someone entered through a closed, possibly unlocked window- took valuables and exited through a rear door. This happened sometime between October 20th & 22nd.

Bicyclists Beware! West End resident Ken Risling discovered a bare, steel wire strung across Eddie Lane in Sebastopol. This wire was about “neck high” and could have cause severe injury to a bicyclist or anyone else. This happened in Sebastopol… but could happen else where. See full story- Press Demo

Chicken roaming Boyce Street. A little hen is roaming the West End. It spent a little time in Rachel & Carissa’s yard (obviously looking for delicious organic treats) and then flew to the roof next door. If you’re missing your chicken- she was on Boyce Street around 1 p.m. on Friday, October 29th.

Roaming chicken needs to go home.
