Want to make a difference this weekend? You can help transform a wasted yard into a beautiful place that will create neighborhood pride or you can help cleanup and maintain the Prince Memorial Greenway. West Enders Betsy Hall and Stan Gow are in charge of these two great community improvement projects. The West End was also featured in a recent Press Democrat article- it is an interesting look at the neighborhood.

May 5^th and 6^th- The West End Garden Challenge 2012 at 133 7^th Street. Rise to the challenge of creating a more sustainable neighborhood. Spend an afternoon or even an hour to help transform the yard at 133 7^th Street from a wasteland to a sustainable, water wise garden filled with natives, herbs and drought tolerant plants. Activities: mulching, digging and planting. Bring: Shovel, rake, gloves, hat and sunscreen. Share: Bring something from your garden bulbs that need separating, herbs, succulents or a stepping stone! W. E. SMART meeting, Earth Day

The DeMeo Park clean up was amazing. Westenders joined together with Chop’s Interact Club, Santa Rosa West Rotary Club and Boy Scout Troop 509 to give the park a Spring cleaning. See photos and more below. April 22nd, Sunday is Earth Day- you can help clean the Prince Memorial Greenway on Saturday and enjoy the Earth Day Festival in Courthouse Square on Sunday.

DeMeo Park Community Cleanup. Thanks to all the folks who spent their Saturday to clean up DeMeo Park. The park was in sad shape- weeds had invaded, the bocce courts were a wreck , ivy and privets had claimed ownership of the cyclone fences. After hours of hard labor, the park has improved and wood chips are being spread to prevent new weeds. On future clean ups we will paint and repair the picket fences, continue grooming the bushes and clean up. Thank you wonderful West Enders, S. R. April 19^th, Thursday SMART public meeting regarding construction to begin on April 27^th. The contractor will be utilizing the SMART property at Railroad Square as a construction material storage and construction staging area. There will be a fence around the SMART property, there may be some dust and noise. The first construction segment will be from B Street in Petaluma to Todd Road. Construction activities will include replacing culverts and drainage features, followed by removing the existing rail, regrading the embankment, putting down new ballast (rock), building new track and tamping it down. Two important dates for Westenders- April 12th – Public Hearing on DeTurk Round Barn’s Use permit at the Planning Commission and April 14th- DeMeo Park Cleanup. As a neighborhood that cares about where we live, we take part in changes and improvements that will affect the West End.

April 12^th, Thursday- DeTurk Round Barn Use Permit at Planning Commission. This Thursday night S. R. Recreation and Parks Department will be asking the Planning Commission to modify the Conditional Use Permit that governs the operation of the Round Barn. In 2009 neighbors worked with the City for over six months and the impact from the weddings and events over the first year have been minimal. This is due to having a use permit that works. Now the Rec. and Parks department is asking for significant changes. Wineyard seeks urban niche in Santa Rosa- The Press Democrat has a nice article about the Wineyard Collective. Many of us have already spent lots of time at D”Argenzio Winery but perhaps you haven’t had a chance to visit the Wineyard. It is a collective tasting room for four local wineries on of them is Shone Farm, the teaching farm for S. R. Junior College. It also has a beer tasting room. No need to drive out to far away tasting rooms… when there is a urban winery within walking distance!

DeMeo Park and DeTurk Round Barn Park both have new recycling bins. These bins are from Conservation Corps North Bay. This nonprofit helps at risk youth (ages 18-28) get their lives back on track with a year’s worth of job training and work experience along with an education to get a GED and High School Diploma. Prince Gateway Park & Greenway is a Community Treasure

Recently, this treasured park and greenway has been the site of extensive graffiti and vandalism. This has been met with shock, dismay, and anger by the community. The extent of the damage is taking some time and expense to clean up and repair, but it is underway. ArtStart students have stepped up to begin repairs of tile work on the salmon statue and are working on plans to replace the dragon mural in a more durable form and also refurbish benches; City crews and a contractor are working to clean the area of debris and blast graffiti markings from the stone and cement work; police and fire are stepping up patrols and interventions to seek places for transient campers to find better shelter than the public park and nab the vandals. Unfortunately, due to the extent of the damage the city does not have sufficient funds to completely restore all of the fixtures right away and may need to re-think the design to select items that are more tamper-proof. Lighting fixtures have been torn apart and stripped of metal materials. This gateway park and trail serves as a welcoming place for neighbors and visitors alike and we want to make sure it is a safe and beautiful place to enjoy. We do need help from the community to be our “eyes, ears, and, on occasion, elbow-grease” to keep it clean, green, and safe. Graffiti Abatement Gets Help

Graffiti is blight on our neighborhoods and is most effectively controlled if removed immediately. If it appears on your property, clean it up now. If it appears in public areas, contact the City to find ways to remove it. While City park crews have just one employee working everyday to remove graffiti from public parks and trails throughout the community, the police department works on graffiti abatement as a property crime and seeks partnerships with neighborhoods to rid the community of such unsightly and harmful vandalism. The abatement program will be staffed temporarily with a Field and Evidence Technician who started work this week to maintain the good work and continuity of the program. Volunteers are engaging in graffiti abatement and the program is up and running as it has for several years. The department will be hiring full time staff for the graffiti abatement program once some internal reorganization of jobs is completed and that hire should be made by early summer. Yep…. we’re officially in the Holiday season. A few ideas to help simplify the holidays- Stay close to home, buy from local merchants and/or local products/ services & spend quality time with friends and loved ones. Go to a play, take your dog to visit Santa, explore a variety of unique handmade crafts, stroll around Railroad Square with hot chocolate, take a carriage ride. Sounds like fun… doesn’t it? It’s so easy to do when you live in the West End.

December 2nd, Friday- Street Cleaning the first Friday of the Month. First thing in the morning- move your cars off the curb to get your gutter swept. This is especially important at this time of year.

December 3rd & 4^th Saturday & Sunday. Santa Paws at Western Farm Center. It’s that time of year, to have your pets picture taken with Santa Paws. Donation includes 4×6 picture and a digital copy emailed to you. All proceeds benefit Canine Companions for Independence. Location: Western Farm Center 21 W. 7^th St. Time: 10am to 4pm

December 3rd, Saturday- First Saturday Clean Up West Ender Stan Gow organizes this monthly cleanup so we can take care of the Santa Rosa Creek. Enjoy pizza afterward. NOTE! Put it on your calendar. The West End Neighborhood Association Fall Meeting will be November 17th, Thursday at 7 p.m. at the DeTurk Round Barn. It’s a good time to see neighbors before rain, cold and holidays keep us busy and indoors. News:

9th Street Community Mural: The finishing detail of the 9^th Street Community Mural is scheduled to be completed on Thursday, November 10^th. The “St. Rose Neighborhood” and “West End Neighborhood” will greet those who travel through the underpass. The Mural Committee members: Denise Hill from St. Rose Neighborhood & Sher Ennis and Lea Barron-Thomas from West End Neighborhood started the project in the Summer of 2009. Their goal was to take a dark, uninviting space and make it friendlier and easy to maintain. The Mural was funded by a City of Santa Rosa CAB grant. Mission complete!

A place to walk

Chop’s Teen Club members are working on a food drive. SAY (Social Advocates for Youth) has a Teen food pantry that is pretty bare. The teens decided to help them and a food drive was the first thing on the list. The Chop’s members will be dropping off boxes to stores in selected Railroad Square dropping bags off at houses in the neighborhood to collect items that people can spare or don’t use. Just leave this bag with any non-perishable food items you can spare in a visible place near your front door. Chops members will come by next Thursday 11/10 between 4pm and 6pm to collect the bags. Only non-perishable items will be collected.

DeMeo Park Clean up: The Interact Club at Chops and S. R. Rotary teamed up on Saturday to revive, refresh and clean up DeMeo Park. Check it out… it looks fabulous.

New Pedestrian trail: The City of S. R. has been constructing a new 10 foot wide pedestrian path from No. Dutton Ave to the S. R. Creek Tail. It is estimated that the new ramp will open by November 11th.

Thanksgiving without cooking or dishes or traveling? It is possible if you have Thanksgiving at Starks. The Thanksgiving Menu (Roast Willie Bird Turkey, Chef Mark’s Andouille Sausage & Wild Mushroom Stuffing, Traditional Giblet Gravy & Pomegranate-Cranberry Relish) will be served from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Most regular menu items will be available. North Bay Hootenanny every Wednesday at the Last Day Saloon. Come see traveling acts, up-and-comers, and local favorites! These shows are free and all ages, but try to bring some cash to donate to the artists- thanks! . Here are the upcoming line-ups: 11/9 Buster Blue, Triivlerackasaurus Rex, and the Erstwhile Memorial String Band. 11/16 B.C. Fitzpatrick, the Timothy O’Neil Band, Graham Lindsey, and Eight Belles. November 12^th, Saturday- The Assistance League “New to You” Shop invites you to a ribbon cutting to celebrate the completion of the Artstart’s murals on their building. Five art panels display models wearing vintage clothing from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. ArtStart artist is Chiara Sarter (That’s Tim Sarter and Chelsea Jacobsen’s daughter.) Join them for the ceremony, refreshments and special sale. Location: “New to You” Shop 5 West 6^th Street Time: 11 a.m.

Nov. 15th, Tuesday A Christmas Story Preview night will benefit the Railroad Square Association for beautification and promotion. News tidbits from the West End and Railroad Square

The West End Neighborhood was recognized by the City of Santa Rosa for participating in their Park Clean Up and Improvement Program. The West End has adopted the DeMeo Bocce courts. Every spring, neighbors organize a clean up of the courts and park. The courts are tended during the bocce season. West End Neighbors also were instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Vintage Rose Garden and Dog Park at DeTurk Round Barn Park. Great job!

DeMeo Park Bulletin Board- Speaking of neighbors improving our parks, DeMeo Park has a new bulletin board- actually it is a reuse of the bulletin board that used to be at DeTurk Round Barn park. Thanks to David Ernst and Allen Thomas for installing it. Go by and check it out!

Movie Maker: Catherine DePrima’s son Marshall Cook will be screening his movie- Division 3, Football’s Finest in Santa Rosa on Thursday, November 10th at the Roxy Theatre at 7:30pm. There will be a Q&A with Marsh and Andy Dick. Division 3 is a college football movie with Andy Dick, Will Sasso, Mo Collins, Will Sasso, Debra Wilson and more. You can get ticket’s on line at http://www.marshallcook.com They’re only $10 and Marshall’s split is going toward a Charity. Not bad for a boy who used to live on Boyce Street!

Snoopy in S. Korea- Santa Rosa’s “Sister City” in South Korea is Jeju Island. For many years, Don Taylor (restaurant owner of Omelette Express) has forged a relationship between our two cities. Don has been instrumental in getting the first Peanut statue in all of Korea. The statue is a beautiful rendition of Snoopy in bronze and he will be placed on a Korean dog house of black lava stone with a red sand stone roof. To see photos go to Omelette Express. New Raw Bar at the Steakhouse- Stark’s Steakhouse’s well-known Happy Hour, delicious beef or a light bite later in the evening makes it a favorite destination for West Enders. With their revamped menu, we can now look forward to enjoying sustainable seafood. Check out the new raw bar through the window as you enter the dining room, where you will see seafood chefs shucking their hearts out daily. Stark’s Steakhouse is located at 521 Adam’s Street in a historic restaurant site that was loving restored and improved by Mark & Terri Stark. The Bones are a hit

New to You Shop- The Assistance League will have a a brand new mural on their building on the Adams Street side. It will look like old fashioned shop windows and besides bring a little life to that side of their building, it will hopefully deter tagging. The Assistance League has made many improvements to their building. West Enders appreciate the renovation and enjoy having the shop right in the neighborhood. Wine Down Thursdays- Don’t forget that every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. is Wine Down Thursday’s at D’Argenzio’s Winery. This Thursday will feature jazzy caberet music from The Moonbeams, 4 food trucks and, of course, D’Argenzio wines. It’s a great place to socialize, eat and drink. New restaurant- Iron Stone California Casual Cuisine serving Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Sunday Brunch. Opening October 3rd in Historic Railroad Square. Iron Stone is located in the Historic Hotel La Rose at308 Wilson Street Open 7 days 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Rail Cars- For many years, there have been four rail cars sitting on the SMART site. In September 2010, two of the rail cars left for their new home with the Timber Heritage Association. Another railcar was moved this month and the last one has been moved to the center or the SMART site waiting for it’s day to move to it’s new home Before you know it- they will be gone. Whew! The weather forecast for tomorrow’s clean up is sunny with a high of 71 Degrees. The Cleanup starts at 10 a.m. followed with a BBQ. There’s 3 other excellent suggestions for your weekend- so go out there and enjoy!

Two important dates for Westenders- April 12th – Public Hearing on DeTurk Round Barn’s Use permit at the Planning Commission and April 14th- DeMeo Park Cleanup. As a neighborhood that cares about where we live, we take part in changes and improvements that will affect the West End.

Happy New Year!(… unless, of course, you think it’s your last year on earth !) The gorgeous weather is uplifting. No winter blahs- so go out and enjoy.
