May 26th, Saturday- Sonoma County’s May Madness JuggleFest Day & Night!!!! Come play with and/or watch some of the best jugglers, unicyclists, and variety artists from around the Bay Area. Several workshops are planned (including beginner workshops for those interested in learning to juggle), so get there early to participate. All skill levels are welcome. DAY at Julliard Park :  9am-6pm, Juggling Show at 4 p.m. Cost: Free (but a $10+ donation will help cover costs) NIGHT at Arlene Francis: Juggle Fest Celebration- an extension of the day long fun.  Juggling and various circus arts will be in abundance throughout the night.  Bocce, BBQ & back fence talk! West End Summer Bocce- a special tradition where friends and neighbors gather at the end of the week to socialize at DeMeo Park.  The Marvelous Wonderettes (6th Street Playhouse) have been extended- this is a must see show. Great songs, costumes and a talented cast. You don’t want to miss it.

 

May 18th, Friday- West End Summer Bocce begins! Join your friends and neighbors at beautiful DeMeo Park for bocce, potluck eats and socializing. Everyone is welcomed kids, dogs and well-behaved adults. Bring a dish or beverage to share. Bring layers- jacket, scarf, thermals etc. (it does get chilly). Remember, no glass! Ahhh! Nice weather,  lots of outdoor events and it is almost time for West End Summer Bocce! West End Bocce officially starts on Friday, May 18th at 6 p.m. This week’s offerings-

A few photos….

The last West End Bocce night of the season was well attended and the weather was cooperative. It was an evening with great food and company. The 9th Street Mural Community has been completed except for the neighborhood names that will face each neighborhood.   We had over 30 volunteers help paint last Saturday!

The Mural Committee members: Denise Hill from St. Rose Neighborhood & Sher Ennis and Lea Barron-Thomas from West End Neighborhood started the project in the Summer of 2009. Their goal was to take a dark, uninviting space and make it friendlier and easy to maintain. It was a simple project but took a long time to get through the City of Santa Rosa Art in Public Places and CalTrans approval processes. We couldn’t have done it without  Tara Matheny-Schuster, Art Coordinator for City of Santa Rosa.

The Mural was funded by a City of Santa Rosa CAB grant. Mario Uribe created the design. ArtStart  was on hand to train the volunteers to use the stencils. We would also like to thank:  Our wonderful community volunteers. Friedman’s for graciously donating all the paint. The Coffee Girls for providing delicious coffee to our hardworking volunteers.   We couldn’t have done it with out you! THANK-YOU! For more photos go to 9th Street Community Mural.

Our last West End Summer Bocce is this Friday… you won’t want to miss it. On Saturday, you can also participate in beautifying the dull, neglected 9th Street overcrossing. Kid fun alert! The White Water rodeo, also on Saturday,  promises to be extremely entertaining. Best of all almost everything is right in the neighborhood.

The goal is to create an attractive, comfortable, graffiti-free experience for the pedestrian, bike rider, driver or neighbor who may travel through this under crossing. The design, by Mario Uribe, is also easy to maintain by neighborhood volunteers. Help us paint! Snacks and beverages provided. September 17th, Saturday- 7th Annual Kid’s Street Poker Run, BBQ & Car Show.  Rev up your engines and go hog wild. BBQ & Car show 2:30- 4 p.m.  Poker run 8:30- 10:30.  Location: Kid St. 709 Davis-   www.kidstreet.org register for poker run.

September 17th- 24th- Creek Week. A week long series of walks, bike rides and activities for all ages.   This will be a time of fun and adventure, with educational activities for everyone at your local creeks and nature areas.   Creek Week event: September 17th, Saturday- Whitewater Rodeo On Santa Rosa Creek (all ages welcome) Build a toy boat and race it down Santa Rosa Creek. Don’t have time to build a boat? Materials and assistance will be available to build your own vessel that morning. Wear shoes that can get wet. Laughs and prizes, everyone is a winner! Boy Scouts and Lifeguards will be on hand to demonstrate their skills and provide water safety. September 8th, Thursday- “The Way Things Go” First in the Great Communities movie series at the Share Exchange focusing on urban sustainability and happiness.  On the 8th, West Ender Russ Scarola will host evening that features a few inspiring short films followed by a group pow wow to figure out what fun and fantastic recycled materials we can use for an upcoming art installation in Santa Rosa. This is Russ’s  SSU grad project!  Movies and discussion every Thursday. Later sessions will explore specific communities around the world.$5 General Admission, $3 Share Ex. Members. So much to do- and all of it close by! It’s the peak of Summer- enjoy the weather and all the delightful events offered in Downtown. As always- you can join your friends and neighbors EVERY Friday at DeMeo Park for West End Bocce and you can “Wine Down” every Thursday at D’Argenzio Winery.

July 27th- August 14th- Sonoma County Fair. Good Ol’ fashioned fun. This year is the 75th anniversary- so opening day has a special procession starting at Wednesday Night Market and ending at the fair. Participants will receive free admission. There’s also free red, white and blue hats to create a living flag out of fairgoers. Fireworks too! Great local music choices: Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs, The Fondettes, Mad Maggies, Shannon Rider, The Don Giovannis and more. Pace yourselves because it’s a busy Summer. Everyone loves West End Summer Bocce at DeMeo park every Friday evening. The hardest thing, of course, is deciding what other events to go to- there’s so many and they are all within walking distance.

July 21-24th Rialto Film Festival  The July film festival features 4 documentaries. Each one is very different and the show times vary- so checking in with the Rialto Cinema’s website is a must. Rain?! What the heck was that about? Well, never mind. Summer is in full swing.
The West End Neighborhood Association Bicycle Parade and BBQ is on July 16th, Saturday. Mark it on your calendars! The Bike parade will start at 1 p.m. at DeMeo Park. BBQ will start at 3 p.m. at DeMeo Park. Don’t forget to decorate your bike!

Bocce, wine and friends- Every Thursday night 4- 8 p.m.- D’Argenzio Winery holds Wine Down Thursday…. they have just finished they bocce courts and they are awesome.  Every Friday night- West End Summer Bocce. Celebrate the West End- neighbors and friends, great food and bocce in a family & kid environment. Well behaved dogs are invited to attend. Bring food or drink to share.

July 1-  Summer Nights at Railroad Square.  A Summer Street Party featuring wine tasting, live music, outdoor dining, crafters and art. July 2nd- First Saturday Clean up This Independence Weekend also celebrate your interdependence by cleaning up the Creek. The Creek is part of our water supply, provides us with recreation, contributes to wildlife habitat and the peace of mind of a babbling brook. Come join us Saturday. We will clean the Creek and if anybody is interested do some weeding and cleanup at the park. Lunch will be provided, pizza. So come join us as we take care of most valuable asset.
