A few photos….

The last West End Bocce night of the season was well attended and the weather was cooperative. It was an evening with great food and company. We took our traditional last photo of the season…. thanks to Brian Howlett for taking our photo. To see more photos from bocce- go to Bocce 2011 in our photo gallery.

The 9th Street Mural Community has been completed except for the neighborhood names that will face each neighborhood.   We had over 30 volunteers help paint last Saturday!

The Mural Committee members: Denise Hill from St. Rose Neighborhood & Sher Ennis and Lea Barron-Thomas from West End Neighborhood started the project in the Summer of 2009. Their goal was to take a dark, uninviting space and make it friendlier and easy to maintain. It was a simple project but took a long time to get through the City of Santa Rosa Art in Public Places and CalTrans approval processes. We couldn’t have done it without  Tara Matheny-Schuster, Art Coordinator for City of Santa Rosa.

The Mural was funded by a City of Santa Rosa CAB grant. Mario Uribe created the design. ArtStart  was on hand to train the volunteers to use the stencils. We would also like to thank:  Our wonderful community volunteers. Friedman’s for graciously donating all the paint. The Coffee Girls for providing delicious coffee to our hardworking volunteers.   We couldn’t have done it with out you! THANK-YOU! For more photos go to 9th Street Community Mural.

  • “Nostalgia for the Light” For his new film,  master director Patricio Guzman travels 10,000 feet above sea level to the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert, where atop the mountains astronomers from all over the world gather to observe the stars. While at the foot of the mountains, women search for the remains of their loved ones- political prisoners, that “disappeared” after the military coup of September, 1973. Times: July 21 Thu 6pm;  July 23 Sat 7:45pm;  July 24 Sun 1pm
  • “These Amazing Shadows” What do the films Casablanca, Blazing Saddles and West Side Story have in common? Besides being popular, they have also been deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and listed on The National Film Registry. THESE AMAZING SHADOWS, an 88-minute documentary, tells the history and importance of the Registry, a roll call of American cinema treasures that reflects the diversity of film, and indeed the American experience itself. • “ The Big Uneasy” The first documentary by long-time “mockumentarian” Harry Shearer, The Big Uneasy follows three remarkable people–the leaders of two scientific investigation teams, and one whistleblower–as they reveal the true story of why New Orleans flooded, and why it could happen in your town, too.
