The Independent Eye’s “Frankenstein” ~ Oct. 7 to Oct. 30, 2011 Written by Conrad Bishop & Elizabeth Fuller, based on the novel by Mary Shelley The Independent Eye presents a new vision of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. “Sing-a-Long Sound of Music” Oct. 29 and Oct. 30, 2011 A benefit event for the 6th Street Playhouse. September… the end of the summer season. The Last West End Bocce is on Friday, September 16th- that’s when we take the group photo so plan to show up early. The last West End Summer Movie night is on Friday, September 9th. The movie will be “Spirited Away”. On the other hand- The Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta and all the surrounding events will be at the end of the month. So it’s all good.

September 2nd, Friday- Avery Risling-Sholl & Ken Risling- West Enders Avery Risling-Sholl, vocalist and fiddler extraordinaire, will be joined Ken Risling once again in the hallowed halls of Aroma Roasters.
Those who follow him know Avery has been studying traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He is back stateside for a brief stay, and wants to play in his home neighborhood. Songwriter Ken Risling (“Dad”) leaps with joy at another chance to team up with his son for an evening of melody, harmony, and singing strings. Other musical friends may show up as well. August 20th- Saturday. Redwood Empire Live Steamers Interactive Museum-Come ride this Saturday! Trains will soon be a reality in Santa Rosa. Here’s an opportunity to teach you kids about trains.  Only a few more runs left before the trains are put up for the winter.  The weather is suppose to be perfect for trains and picnics, so pack up the kids, bring a picnic basket and spend the afternoon.Westender Andre Siedentopf  (RELSIM member) says if you mention you saw this event on their website or Facebook- you will get a free ride!! Every Wednesday night downtown Santa Rosa holds a market with produce, crafts, food and music.   This is a great opportunity to see musical group, “Juan Boulder”- featuring the West End’s own Bob Murnane (Murnane Floors on W. 6th Street is a wonderful West End sponsor!). This promises to be a “foot stomping” good time- Juan Boulder will be alternating sets with a Clogging group. They will play on the Main Stage. August 14th- The Quarter Mile Combo plays at Live at Juilliard. Pure rockin’ Americana Rockabilly- this 4 piece Americana Rockabilly band features the West End’s own Justin Barr on guitar, vocalist Nettie Hammar, drummer Gary Daly and Todd Troublemaker on bass. A great show. They have a recently released cd “Motels, Gas and Beer”. You will note that the cover photo is shot in front of the DeTurk Winery building. The weather is finally warming up… and as always there is a variety of events and happenings to choose from. West Enders can enjoy Bocce at DeMeo Park every Friday night. We also are usually within walking or biking distance to the best events in Santa Rosa.  Take advantage of having the Rialto Cinema right in the neighborhood- the films are unique and flavorful.

June 21st ,Tuesday- Making the Boys  “The Boys in the Band” the first-ever gay play and subsequent Hollywood movie to successfully reach a mainstream audience changed everything. Making the Boys explores the enduring legacy and controversy that endures to this day “The Boys in the Band”. Tickets on sale now at rialtocinemas.com. June 22, Wednesday  Help send Snoopy  as our Goodwill Ambassador. This will be the first Snoopy ever on the Korean Island, Jejudo,  Santa Rosa’s sister city. For 10 years, we have exchanged students and performers between our two cities. Jejudo has sent 3 statues over the years and this will be our first. A 30 inch bronzed Snoopy will be placed on a 36 inch pedestal that will be made in Jejudo and placed on a street named “Santa Rosa”. Help send the Snoopy Monument and taste some wine… all for  $20. June 25th, Saturday-  D’Argenzio winery and Time Traveler Tours Special Event- D’Argenzio Winery and  Time Traveler Tours are teaming up to give a  short walking tour of Railroad Square that will show guests where the Santa Rosa wine industry began. The tour will highlight old winery sites and give a history of early wine making in Santa Rosa. Wine and appetizers will served at D’Argenzio Winery after the tour.  $20 Tickets Location: Tour will meet in Railroad Square by S. R. Visitor’s Center. Time: 3- 5 p.m.

June 28th , Tuesday- Something Ventured 5 p.m. 7:30 p.m. A documentary about Silicon Valley’s first venture capitalists and the companies they helped bring to life. The film also includes some of the finest entrepreneurs sharing how they worked with these venture capitalists to grow world-class companies like Intel, Apple, Cisco, Atari, Genentech, Tandem and others. It’s all about creativity, innovation and talent in the West End. There are many, many opportunities to explore your own talent or enjoy the talent of another West Ender. Don’t forget- we are looking for talented kids for the Kid’s Talent Show on Sunday, May 22nd.

May 21 & 22, Saturday & Sunday-The Maker Faire is one of the most creative, unrestrained events celebrating arts, crafts, science and engineering. All the big Regatta vehicles including West End favorites the Hennepin Crawler and Murray the the fish and the entire Fun Bike Unicorn Club (all those wickedly crazy bike folks) will be attending.  As the World’s Largest DIY Festival, this two-day family friendly Faire has something for everyone – a showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness and a celebration of the Maker mindset. Never has learning been so much fun or transplanted into a carnival-like atmosphere where fans of all ages explore several exposition and workshop pavilions, an outdoor midway, hands-on workshops, demonstrations and DIY competitions. Allen and Lea have graciously offered to host the kid’s talent show on Sunday, May 22 about 3pm. It will be a small “low key” talent show. Remember, low key and fun is the idea. Kids can sing, play the kazoo, lip sync, recite a poem, perform magic tricks, tell jokes, act in a skit with other kids, juggle or display tricks they’ve taught the dog.

School of Drama – The Youth Summer Musical Theater Workshop. This Summer workshop will culminate in a four performance run of Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Students will receive training in acting, dance and singing in a nurturing and challenging atmosphere. Workshop behinds June 13th and last performance is on July 17th. We are very fortunate, in the West End, to live amongst creative, imaginative residents. We also have live theater and a theater that shows independent, foreign and classic films right in the neighborhood. The West End Arts and Theater District has a nice ring… let’s use it!

April 22nd, Friday- Songwriters in the Round. Those of you who were at the opening of the DeTurk Round Barn will remember West Ender Ken Risling‘s performance with Oona Risling-Sholl. This Friday, he has another show, this one with three other songwriters — Rob Heath, Mike Ehlers, and Larry Potts. As with last year’s Hopmonk show, it will be a Nashville-style round-robin, with each songwriter taking turns performing their originals. Proud West End Mother, Catherine DePrima reports that her son Marshall Cook’s feature film directorial debut “Division III, Football’s Finest” is completed. Marshall not only directed, he also wrote the script and acted in it and edited it. The team’s quarterback is named Mitch DePrima (a nod to his mom).  The cast includes Marshall Cook, Mo Collins, Andy Dick, Debra Wilson and Will Sasso. Theatresports Invitational.  It’s a friendly battle- 6th Street IMPROV! will compete with some of the best improv talent in the area over the course of four evenings in April. The teams compete in a series of challenge rounds using audience suggestions to win points for judges. Each night will be judged by a panel of community leaders. April 19th, Tuesday- Kings of Pastry. A Rialto Cinemas film festival: Imagine a scene never before witnessed: Sixteen French pastry chefs gathered in Lyon for three intense days of mixing, piping and sculpting everything from delicate chocolates to six-foot sugar sculptures in hopes of being one of the best. This is the prestigious Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition (Best Craftsmen in France) and winning is more than the ultimate recognition for every pastry chef – it is a dream and an obsession.  Similar to the Olympics, the three-day contest takes place every four years and it requires that the chefs not only have extraordinary skill and nerves of steel, but also a lot of luck. Tim Sarter: I’ve opened a new play- Stand By Your Man the story of Tammy Wynette with Heritage Music Theater.  It’s running from last weekend through April 17th at the Cinnabar in Petaluma.  It has the same basic band as Lost Highway – Me, Jim Peterson, Dave Zirbel and Chris Rovetti.  What’s more both Chiara and Fiona (daughters) are in it with me! The entire run sold out in one day, but there a still some tix available for the extended, closing weekend of April 15th.
