Safe House Program– Recently, neighbors have been accosted by a bearded white man driving a white car. One woman, out riding bikes with her young son, and one young teenage girl, out with her brother near the market, were followed by this man. We were discussing the incidents on the West End facebook page, and the idea came about to have safe houses. While safe houses are not the answer to the problem of predators, they are at least a way for neighbors in the West End to provide some peace of mind for each other. What the idea of safe house means is that if you or your children are followed by someone and are near one of these houses, you can go to them for help. People who sign up to be Safe Houses post a symbol on window or door that is visible from the street. The map displayed here gives an overview of what safe houses are on what streets. If you would like to be part of this effort, please send Carol Ciavonne your name and address via email. She will make sure you get a safe house sign to post on your house, and will update the map to show your house.
