Do you know an organization or person who gives back to our city and enriches our community? Now accepting nominations! Since 1978, the S. R. City Council has granted Merit Awards to individuals, businesses and organizations who have volunteered their time and energies to serve the community and improve the quality of life in Santa Rosa. The Merit Awards acknowledge those who go above and beyond by:  beautifying our community; strengthening our neighborhoods; serving others, particularly young people, seniors and those in need;  and enriching & expanding the artistic and historical culture of the city. Is your home Green? Would you like to brag? You can apply to have your home star in the Green Homes Tour on October 2nd.  The City of Santa Rosa’s Clean Energy Advocates and Solar Sonoma County are organizing a Green Homes Tour on October 22nd Energy Efficiency and Solar in Santa Rosa! Learn how to make your home green, speak with experts, and enter the raffle to win prizes! Visit: www.srcity.org/SRGreenHomes. Operation Lifesaver. Trains are coming! Train service may start as soon as March 2011. The City of Santa Rosa would like to remind you to stay alert at railroad crossings. Never stop your vehicle on the railroad tracks. Follow all crossing sign warnings and never walk on or around train tracks.  Do not operate a cell phone without an approved hands free device. August 17th–  Water Smart Expo The City of Santa Rosa’s Water-Use Efficiency team will be hosting their annual Water Smart Expo on Wednesday, August 17th. For your education, you will find: Qualified professional landscaping and plumbing advice, information about new technology in appliances,  the most efficient irrigation products and info on available programs and rebates. Visit rainwater and graywater displays, learn about creek tours, and meet the clean energy advocate team. Do you feel that your neighborhood isn’t organized? The City of Santa Rosa would like to teach you how it’s done! S. R. Second Annual Neighborhood Summit Designed to strengthen neighborhoods and neighborhood organizations, facilitate communication in and among neighborhoods, and improve neighborhood and government partnerships. FRIDAY, AUGUST 19 6:30 – 8:30 pm at City Hall Council Chamber, 100 Santa Rosa Avenue Speaker: Amalia Alarcon de Morris, Portland’s Office of Neighborhood Involvement SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 9 am – 3 pm at Finley Community Center, 2060 West College Avenue.  A day of workshops by community leaders and a resource fair. West End Neighborhood Association Leader, Allen Thomas will discuss neighbors organizing together to fight crime. The West End Neighborhood Association has been organized for over 20 years, has a newsletter, regular meetings, events, participates in Neighborhood Watch and has an awesome website!  For more info on the West End. August 29th, Monday- Free educational workshop for homeowners of historical properties. Want to learn how you can update your older home to be more energy efficient? Don’t want to lose the historical integrity in the process? This FREE workshop will cover the do’s and don’ts of energy efficiency measures without losing that historical appeal. This workshop is hosted by the City of Santa Rosa’s Clean Energy Advocates in partnership with the Cultural Heritage Board at the newly renovated Santa Rosa. RSVP here.
