September… the end of the summer season. The Last West End Bocce is on Friday, September 16th- that’s when we take the group photo so plan to show up early. The last West End Summer Movie night is on Friday, September 9th. The movie will be “Spirited Away”. On the other hand- The Great West End and Railroad Square Handcar Regatta and all the surrounding events will be at the end of the month. So it’s all good.

September 2nd, Friday- Avery Risling-Sholl & Ken Risling- West Enders Avery Risling-Sholl, vocalist and fiddler extraordinaire, will be joined Ken Risling once again in the hallowed halls of Aroma Roasters.
Those who follow him know Avery has been studying traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He is back stateside for a brief stay, and wants to play in his home neighborhood. Songwriter Ken Risling (“Dad”) leaps with joy at another chance to team up with his son for an evening of melody, harmony, and singing strings. Other musical friends may show up as well. The Save our Pools 5k race will, once again, run a path through the West End. The race starts at 8 a.m.- so watch for racers to course through the West End sometime after that. Sit on your porch, drink your coffee and ring your cowbells for the racers- unless, of course, you plan to race! Also… only 4 more Bocce nights. Last date is September 16th.

Running by DeTurk Round Barn:

August  28th, Saturday- The Santa Rosa Marathon and 5K SAVE OUR POOLS Charity Race. The 5K will loop through the West End… so get your cowbells out to cheer on the runners!  ( 5 K race map) The Marathon is a double 13.1 mile loop that starts in Juilliard Park in downtown Santa Rosa.  The half Marathon starts at the same location and completes one loop.  It is a flat, fast Boston Qualified course that loops the entire scenic Prince Memorial Greenway. The 5 K race will raise funds to help support Chops Teen Center’s  unique workforce job placement program  and to help “Save the (Finley and Ridgeway) Pools. A portion of the Marathon will benefit the Sonoma County Humane Society and Valley of the Moon Children’s Foundation. Enjoy a fun festival in Juilliard Park after the races that will include live music by local rock band WonderBread 5. For more info S. R. Marathon

August 19th, Friday at 8:00pm – August 28th at 2:00pm- Great War Chronicle An elderly woman tells her grandchildren of her early years with their grandfather, when the demands of war sadly separated them in a rock opera production. 6th Street Playhouse presents a rare opportunity to see a professionally produced workshop production of the new musical “Great War Chronicle” written by a noted Bay Area composer, featuring a romantic story set against a historical backdrop. August 20th- Saturday. Redwood Empire Live Steamers Interactive Museum-Come ride this Saturday! Trains will soon be a reality in Santa Rosa. Here’s an opportunity to teach you kids about trains.  Only a few more runs left before the trains are put up for the winter.  The weather is suppose to be perfect for trains and picnics, so pack up the kids, bring a picnic basket and spend the afternoon.Westender Andre Siedentopf  (RELSIM member) says if you mention you saw this event on their website or Facebook- you will get a free ride!! West End Musicians- Tim Sarter & Amber Lee Baker will perform.  Mad Maggies (Celtic Polka)  The Mad Maggies are seven musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area who play roots-driven, rowdy folk fusion with a dash of hot pepper and a swig of slivovitz — they kick up some dust. the West End’s own Tim Sarter on Bass. Do you like bringing your well-behaved dog with you to events and happenings? Here are a few ideas that are dog friendly, most are in the West End or in walking distance but not all in are in Santa Rosa:

Every day is dog friendly at Western Farm Center! It’s a locally owned, family run business that gives back to the community. What’s not to love… especially the treats handed out by the friendly staff at the counter. Western Farm Center is located at 21 W. 7th Street and is a long time sponsor of the West End Neighborhood Association. ( Thank-you!)

“Wine Down Music Bocce Thursday”- Wine, Music, Food and Bocce… in a dog friendly atmosphere ( reminds you of the West End… doesn’t it?) August 5th, Friday to  September 1st, Thursday- Art Show – West End artist Jenny Harp has a current art show entitled “Everything will Be Okay” from August 5th to September 1st. Location: Daredevils & Queens Artist Reception on September 1st 7:30 to 9 p.m.

August 9th, Tuesday- Mad Maggies (Celtic Polka)  The Mad Maggies are seven musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area who play roots-driven, rowdy folk fusion with a dash of hot pepper and a swig of slivovitz — they kick up some dust. The West End’s own Tim Sarter on Bass. Location: Park Stage at Sonoma County Fair Time: 6:00, 7:15, 8:15 p.m.

 

The Mad Maggies

August 10th, Wednesday- Wednesday Night Market. Every Wednesday night downtown Santa Rosa holds a market with produce, crafts, food and music.   This is a great opportunity to see musical group, “Juan Boulder”- featuring the West End’s own Bob Murnane (Murnane Floors on W. 6th Street is a wonderful West End sponsor!). This promises to be a “foot stomping” good time- Juan Boulder will be alternating sets with a Clogging group. They will play on the Main Stage. August 13th, Saturday- Miss Kitty and the Big Dogs. Jump, Swing & Blues. Excellent vocals and musicians featuring West End musician Tim Sarter on bass. The other excellent band members are Shannon Rider, Paul Urguhart, Dennis Sherman, Mark Marelli, Brandon Hunt & Justin Enright. Location: Lagunitas Tap Room & Beer Sanctuary 1280 North McDowell Boulevard
Petaluma, CA  Time: 3:00pm – 6:00pm

August 14th- The Quarter Mile Combo plays at Live at Juilliard. Pure rockin’ Americana Rockabilly- this 4 piece Americana Rockabilly band features the West End’s own Justin Barr on guitar, vocalist Nettie Hammar, drummer Gary Daly and Todd Troublemaker on bass. A great show. They have a recently released cd “Motels, Gas and Beer”. You will note that the cover photo is shot in front of the DeTurk Winery building. Got to love that band!  Free Sunday Concert Series. Enjoy listening to music in a lovely park setting. Great event for the whole family- including the dog. Location: Juilliard Park 227 S. R. September 2nd, Friday- Avery Risling-Sholl & Ken Risling- West Enders Avery Risling-Sholl, vocalist and fiddler extraordinaire, will be joined Ken Risling once again in the hallowed halls of Aroma Roasters.
Those who follow him know Avery has been studying traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. He is back stateside for a brief stay, and wants to play in his home neighborhood. Songwriter Ken Risling (“Dad”) leaps with joy at another chance to team up with his son for an evening of melody, harmony, and singing strings. Other musical friends may show up as well. Join them for an evening of fun, music (and maybe a few tears). Location: Aroma Roasters 95 Fifth St  Time: 8:00 PM
