We are very fortunate, in the West End, to live amongst creative, imaginative residents. We also have live theater and a theater that shows independent, foreign and classic films right in the neighborhood. The West End Arts and Theater District has a nice ring… let’s use it!

April 22nd, Friday- Songwriters in the Round. Those of you who were at the opening of the DeTurk Round Barn will remember West Ender Ken Risling‘s performance with Oona Risling-Sholl. This Friday, he has another show, this one with three other songwriters — Rob Heath, Mike Ehlers, and Larry Potts. As with last year’s Hopmonk show, it will be a Nashville-style round-robin, with each songwriter taking turns performing their originals. Ken promises to play at least one song with a bad word in it, but still, it will be an all ages event he has invited his mother to… $7 door Location: Coffee Catz, 6761 Sebastopol Ave. #300, Sebastopol Time: 7 p.m. Facebook

This is an important alert for cat owners or other animals that may be exposed.

If any of you Westenders have outdoor cats, or indoor-outdoor cats, our neighbors on Seventh St just told us that three of the feral cats they have been feeding for several years have been poisoned. They come back from somewhere and die a terrible, painful death under their house. Please be aware, and watch your pets. They are apparently getting the poison from something that is attracting them. The Humane Society has been alerted, along with the SR Police. Please contact one of the agencies if you are suspicious of anything. Thank you.

News about West End neighbors and friends.

Arlene Francis Center- The gorgeous historic building that previous housed the New College has morphed into the newest venue for a variety of events. The Community is delighted to have a unique, flexible space for music, happenings, classes and films. The building has been given loving care and is a great attribute to Wilson Street. (Thanks Bruce and Martin- we REALLY appreciate that!) Last Sunday, ShopParty- a collective of artists and crafters,  held their craft fair/art show at the A. F. Center and it was a bustling, fun place to be. To stay current on events at Arlene Francis check out facebook. For Facebook Phobics check out: http://arlenefranciscenter.org/

Neighbor finds Full Moon Bike Ride an inspiration- Last year, West End Neighbor Deborah Coish decided to go on the Full Moon bike ride. She enjoyed it so much she started going on more bike rides and when she realized she could pedal more than 7 miles without collapsing she decided to seriously take up cycling. Fast forward about a year, and Debi is proud to announce that she will ride 50 miles on May 1st in the Tour De Cure for the American Diabetes Assn. Fundraiser. She hopes to raise at least $1000 and if you would like to help her in her quest you can support her go to http://main.diabetes.org/goto/DCOISH Way to go Debi!

Boyce & Coulter  Street Speed signs- Coulter has no stop sign where it intersects with Boyce Street. Cars entering from 9th Street can really shoot down that street while cutting through the West End. Boyce Street a stop sign at Coulter but folks seem to want to speed in spite of it. Boyce & Coulter Street parents are taking an active role in reminding folks to slow down. West Enders are a creative bunch and they have created custom signs that are eye catching and fun. Signs are put in the street during “play time”.

West End Charter School- Westenders attended the S. R.C.S. Board meeting to support a West End Charter School. From Tory Paul:  Great job everyone! We presented a wide variety of viewpoints that were all very unique and well spoken. I was proud of our group. Thanks again to everyone who gave their support, either by coming, speaking or sending along words of encouragement. The West End is truly a special place. West End Vintage Rose Garden- When the DeTurk Round Park was rehabbed, our roses had a rough year. They were pulled out, stored in a neighbor’s yard and then replanted and are now in remarkably great shape. At this point, there are 31 rose bushes, most of the roses are dated prior to the 1930s which keeps with our neighborhood’s historic designation. Stroll on down to the DeTurk Round Barn and enjoy the new rose garden.

DeTurk Commons- The cottages at DeTurk Commons are slowly beginning to glow with color. Originally these houses were mostly white, beige and soft yellow. Slowly new paint jobs are bringing more vibrancy and hues to the streetscape.

In our history, West End neighborhood children were always able to walk to a nearby school. Today our children today are often driven to schools and sometimes the schools don’t offer the programs, classes and outlooks that we desire for our children. Take an hour or two this Wednesday night… to do something about it.

Other DeTurk Weddings- Not everyone knows this but there have been two other weddings at DeTurk Round Barn Park. This was not in the barn, of course, since it has only recently been made habitable. One wedding was another set of West End Neighbors who married in June 2001. It was a traditional wedding and the reception was held elsewhere. There was also another young couple who married at the park on April 9th 2009. This untraditional couple took their wedding photo on Wilson Street. (They sound like fun too!)
