Events and entertainment whether in the West End, featuring West End Performers or within walking distance are always plentiful.We know you can’t possibly do everything so here’s photos & videos to show you what you missed.

Quarter Mile Combo- played at Hopmonk Tavern. This 4 piece Americana Rockabilly band features the West End’s own Justin Barr on guitar, vocalist Nettie Hammar, drummer Gary Daly and Todd Troublemaker on bass. A great show. They have a recently released cd “Motels, Gas and Beer”. You will note that the cover photo is shot in front of the DeTurk Winery building. Got to love that band!

Quarter Mile Combo

Ken Risling and Avery Risling-Sholl- Performed at Aroma Roasters. Ken sings his original songs, Avery offers traditional Celtic music, songs and fiddle. There were other guests, Oona Risling-Sholl sang a song with her father, Ken. Kate Sholl joined the whole family for a few songs. There were also members from the S. F. Scottish Fiddlers. An incredible night.

Santa Rosa ADULT Gong Show- This is a live version of the old T. V. show- but with an adult rating. The show, produced by Kelly Cowan & Jacquie Smith, was hilarious and everyone looks forward the next one. Watch S. R. ADULT Gong Show- Click Here!

Save our Pools- Almost 6oo people ran/walked through the West End Neighborhood on Sunday for the “Save our Pools” 5 K. West Enders watched them from their front porches and cheered them on with cowbells and waves. Racers got to see the DeTurk Round Barn, our two lovely parks and historic homes- many for the first time. West Ender Veronica Jordan and her friend, Ann Figurski made a big splash dressed in swimming attire and sporting “Save our Pools” across their baby bumps. See Press Democrat News story

Don’t Forget! Sunday morning 5K in the West End

This Sunday, 400-500 people will run through the West End Neighborhood. This 5K run will help save the Ridgway and Finley pools. Get involved! Run (or walk) the 5K, volunteer to help guide runners through the West End or cheer them (cow bell) on as they run by your front porch on Sunday morning.

Vounteer: Meet Kelley Magnuson at 8am on Sunday morning in Juilliard Park at the stage. The stage is located on the front lawn area of the park. 5 K Run begins at 9 a.m. and should be done by 10:30 for those who are walking. The fast runners will complete the course in 15-30 minutes. 5K run through the West End on Sunday

This Sunday, 400-500 people will run through the West End Neighborhood. This 5K run will help save the Ridgway and Finley pools. Get involved! Run (or walk) the 5K, volunteer to help guide runners through the West End or cheer them on as they run by your front porch on Sunday morning. (See race route and details below)

14 West End volunteers are needed! To volunteer: contact Laneil Bryant, Recreation Coordinator, LBryant@srcity.org or call Tel. (707) 543-3225. Make sure to leave contact information. Commitment issues? Interested Volunteers can meet Kelley Magnuson at 8am on Sunday morning in Juilliard Park at the stage. The stage is located on the front lawn area of the park. 5 K Run begins at 9 a.m. and should be done by 10:30 for those who are walking. The fast runners will complete the course in 15-30 minutes.

August 27th, Friday- West End Summer Bocce- Every Friday at 6 p.m. at DeMeo Park. Only 4 Bocce nights left this season. Join your friends and neighbors at beautiful DeMeo Park. Bring food to share- this is part of the experience. Bocce is an all age, dog friendly event. To keep the event enjoyable and comfortable for all- please remember to observe Park rules: No glass, dogs on leashes. The West End Neighborhood Association has procured a Special Alcohol Permit and Lavatory for West End Summer Bocce. Wear layers for chilly nights (We are not kidding). West End Bocce is also on facebook .

August 29th, Sunday- The Santa Rosa Marathon- A marathon (13.1 mile loop X 2), a 1/2 marathon (13.1 mile loop) and a 5K run. NOTE: All Proceeds from the 5K Walk/Run and festival will go to the Aquatics Trust fund to help “Save Our Pools”. All races start at Juilliard Park. Marathon/half marathon starts at 7 a.m. 5 K starts at 9 a.m. Enjoy a fun festival in Juilliard Park after the races that will include live music by local country band Blue Rock Country Club, food, and fun for the kids!

Crime Alert: A neighbor reports that yesterday when she got home- she saw a man selling strawberries door to door. When she heard her doorbell ring, she didn’t answer the bell because she didn’t want to buy strawberries. The bell kept ringing & ringing, so she looked out the window to verify who it was… and right then the guy started jiggling her door knob. Luckily her door was locked! Thanks for the report. August 27th, Friday 8:30 p.m.- West Enders Ken Risling and Avery Risling-Sholl will be back at Aroma Roasters. Are you Gong worthy?

Every Sunday Night – West End DJ Katie Vrooman has a specialty radio show called “Great Dames, Vintage Chicks,” a collection of torch singers, big band singers and jazz vocalists from the 1930’s- 1960’s. Katie hand selects all the music from the show and talks about it as well. You can also hear Katie on Monday- Friday during mid-day- But the Sunday night show (10 p.m. to midnight) is about female singers who “carry the torch”. The KRUSH 95.9

CHOP’s Artist Series Video and upcoming event: There is a great link on the Press Democrat of a video of the Chop’s Artist Series that was captured at the Art Gala. Thought we might want to share it with our neighbors, especially those who were unable to attend the Art Gala. Click Here to watch! Proud West End Mother, Catherine DePrima reports that her son, Marshall Cook is currently filming his first Feature Film Directorial. Marshall not only directed, he also wrote the script and acted in it. It was not too long ago that Marshall, was a young boy on Boyce Street. For more info on Marshall Cook

August 24th, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.- West End Full Moon Bike Ride. It is official – West End Full Moon ride will depart De Meo Park at 7:30. We will try something a little different this time. To celebrate the opening of the paved path from downtown Santa Rosa to Willowside Road, we are riding to Willowside and back. We should be able to see the moon free from fog and city lights. The first West End Poodle Party was a smashing success. There were at least 25 poodles, mostly standard but also a few other sizes. We even had a few Doodles. Owners and their Poodles had a great time socializing. Western Farm Center’s Bob Bertolini, every dog’s favorite uncle and owner of two poodles, brought delicious dog ice cream. Kellie from Decker Street reports: One of our West End neighbors was in the Press Democrat today, well his Restaurant was. Luis on Decker Street owns Las Palmas Restaurant which was chosen as one of the best places for Fish Tacos in the County. I found a link: http://www.biteclubeats.com/2010/08/fish-taco-quest.html and the article says: Top Pick: Las Palmas Fish tacos aren’t always on the menu, but when they are, jump. DeTurk Round Barn Project Update, News

Here’s the latest update from Kevin Teel, TLCD Architecture. The DeTurk Round Barn project began in April and the projected complete date is sometime in October. The completion date is subject to change due to a variety of circumstances.

Dog Park- Now open. Three new benches have been installed- will be retrofitted with mid-armrest. Round Barn- A) 3rd concrete pour in barn B) Finish Rough Plumbing C) Finish Rough Electrical D) Preliminary site grading/fire line E) New Roof/Skylight installation F) Continued Wood framing inside barn. Off-Site Improvements- Curb/Gutter and side walk work commences 8-18-10. (at Donahue and W. 8th)

Kid Street Learning Center- On Monday, a school group from Kid Street Learning Center, toured the West End. Executive Director and Principal, Linda Conklin said it was an outing to let the kids become familiar with the neighborhood. Along the way, they stopped at the dog park and met a few West End Dogs. Kid Street Learning Center, located in the Old Lincoln School, is a nonprofit charter school. They welcome volunteers as well as donations of school supplies. Santa Rosa’s Rialto Cinema makes interim deal with 6th Street Playhouse – See Press Democrat Story Rialto

Carol Dean was appointed by councilwoman Jane Bender to the Santa Rosa Board of Public Utilities. She is filling a seat vacated by a resigning board member and will serve until December. Carol served several years on the BPU and also currently serves on the state North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Crime Alert- Monday evening around 11 p.m.- an intruder entered a Boyce Street backyard- and was frightened away by an alert neighbor and a little barking dog. Evidently the person jumped over a fence and was gathering items in the yard to steal. The neighbor heard an unusual noise and looked out his back door to check on things. When he saw that the person did not belong in the yard- he hollered at him. The intruder dropped everything and hopped over another fence. (The little dog was also giving the guy the business.) Meanwhile, the neighbor’s wife called SRPD. This is a good example of the importance of knowing your neighbors and using the principals of Neighborhood Watch. Thank-you neighbors!

Live at Juilliard- Many West End Neighbors enjoyed this all-age, dog friendly concert series. It you were planning to go and didn’t it’s unfortunate as the Final Concert was on Sunday, August 15th. Better luck next year!

Bocce and Movie this Friday, crime alert

Don’t let the cooler Summer weather stop you from enjoying our traditionally warm weather activities. It’s been cold at night- so just remember to bring lots of layers for Bocce and the Movie. Think fleece, sweater, scarf and parka!

Friday night- West End Bocce and Movie Night at DeMeo Park – 6 p.m. Socialize with your neighbors. Bocce is an all age, dog friendly event. To keep the event enjoyable and comfortable for all- please remember to observe Park rules: No glass, dogs on leashes. Bring food to share. 9 p.m. – When it’s dark enough- we will watch the movie E.T. Your kids may love it as much as you do! (Movie details here and parental advisory here ) Bring blankets & such to sit on and plenty of things to keep warm with. We’ll have free popcorn to share. Crime Alert- At approximately 3 a.m. on Thursday morning (August 12th)- someone tried to steal the wheels and tires off of a resident’s car (Honda). When the car alarm went off- they ran off but were still able to take one wheel and tire. The lug nuts on the other three tires were loose- so they were prepped for removal. This happened on W. 6th Street- near Madison Street.
