An update from Officer Anderson who was at our Spring West End Neighborhood meeting:

West End Neighbors,

Yesterday a burglar was caught in a house, on the east side of Santa Rosa. Following the arrest, officers discovered he lived in the 800 block of Davis St. A search warrant was served there, and more stolen property was located. I do not know if he is the person committing the auto burglaries in your neighborhood, but it may be worth a call to the detective. I have attached the media release for your information.

March 21st, Sunday at 3p.m.- Pug Sunday! From Lisa Howard: Our next monthly pug play day is Sunday, March 21, at 3 p.m. I just checked weather.com and it shows a high of 68 degrees and mostly cloudy for Sunday. So, unless it rains or an emergency comes up, Lucy and I plan to be there. Come out and play with us! Please no food or snacks within the fenced area for the safety of our pugs as well as other dogs that may visit the park after us. And, of course, any friendly dogs/breeds are always welcome.

P.S. I just saw this story on KTVU news. If you use flea/tick products on your dog or cat – you’ll want to read this. Many of these products contain a pesticide that can be very dangerous to pets. http://www.ktvu.com/news/22860966/detail.html

Daisy the Cat- Ol’  Daisy made it back to her house. Nobody knows where she was- but she’s still alive and with her family.

Daisy lives at 300 Boyce Street, email Katherine at chadandkj@comcast.net

Our old kitty daisy went missing Saturday night. A neighbor found her disoriented/sleepy behind their car and kindly placed her on our porch bench in a blanket. When we came home she was gone and we have not seen her since. Given her age (17) we believe she may have passed but we do not know where. If anyone finds her we would like to know so we can take care of her. She is a grey/white cat, small/thin due to age. Any news would be appreciated.

Thanks, Katherine

New Car break-in occurred last night (March 14th). Resident went out to carport (located on Hewett St.) to find windows smashed.

Day light Savings means clocks have moved forward 1 hour, have you changed your clocks? The March issue of the West End Neighborhood News should be delivered to your door this weekend.

Car theft update: Good news. I spotted our Previa in the Coddingtown lot and was able to recover it. Was an anxious 40 minutes waiting for the police to show.Minor damage and it needs cleaning as it smells like it wa being lived and smoked in, but we are thrilled to have it back!  Horrible about all the break ins. Wonder if it is the same person?  – Tim

“Rocky” Update From Sonoma County Animal Care: Thank you to all of you who have contacted us about Rocky, the dog that was beaten (on Wilson St.) on Saturday, March 6. He is doing reasonably well under the circumstances. Earlier this week our veterinarian, Dr. John Strathman, wired Rocky’s jaw to repair a fracture, and removed several broken teeth. Rocky may need a root canal to save one of his canines. Dr. Strathman predicts a full recovery. Rocky the Dog  If you would like to make a donation to the Sonoma County Animal Shelter, Animal Welfare Fund on behalf of Rocky, please call (707) 565-5407, or go to How Can You Help ? Donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible.

Hello Fellow West Enders- I am looking to grow some food this year and wanted to know if anyone wanted to coordinate / collaborate. yours in design- Robin Stephani  cloud9designs@comcast.net 350 Garden Challenge A “Garden Wheel” is a group of neighbors and friends that comes together to create and nurture food gardens and community, and to share locally-grown food, labor, information and resources. Typically, members take turns working on garden projects that rotate (like a wheel) from household to household. Eventually all members benefit from hands-on support in their own food garden and the sharing of information, resources and fun.

West End Neighbors take notice!

On Wednesday Morning ( 2 to 5 a.m.) 3 cars on Jefferson St. (near W. 7th) were broken into. Stereo systems and speakers were ripped out and other items stolen. One car in particular suffered $4000 of damage and nothing was stolen except prescription sunglasses.

We need to be vigilant about keeping our eyes and ears open. Have a conversation with your neighbors and discuss the situation so everyone is aware and willing to call police and/or their neighbors should a suspicious situation arise. Take special consideration to where you park your cars. Motion lights and security lighting are a good idea.

Remember that our neighbors on W. 7th also recently had both of their cars stolen: a Maroon 1996 Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon and a Gold 1997 Previa Minivan. At last report, they had not been found or returned. The family is very upset about it- (and without cars!)

There was also an unverified report about an attempted truck theft on Hewett (on the West side of Dutton) on Sunday night.

Our next West End Neighborhood Association meeting is on Thursday, March 18th at 7 p.m. at the Assistance League of So. Co. 5 W. 6th Street. As a timely coincidence, one of our special guests is Santa Rosa’s new Chief of Police, Tom Schwedhelm.

Two unfortunate news items- both crime related.

Cars theft on W. 7th Street- Heads up to the neighborhood. We’ve now had BOTH of our cars stolen from in front of our house. Friday afternoon Tait (our son) left the keys to the car in the door of our ’96 Maroon Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon. They drove off in it around 3:15 with a car and a full set of keys. We immediately had the locks changed on our house, but as it is more of an ordeal AND insurance does not cover changing the car locks, we had not yet done the same for the van.  Last night they came back and stole our Previa. That one is a gold, ’97 Previa mini van. It has a dent in the passenger door, but is otherwise in great shape. I’m particularly upset about that one. Please spread the word.  Thanks, Tim

Police Press Releases 3/8/2010

On March 6, 2010, at approximately 10:30 p.m., officers of the Santa Rosa Police Department responded to the 700 block of Wilson Street regarding a subject beating a dog. While en route, witnesses reported hearing the dog’s labored breathing and whimpering.

Upon arrival officers located a dog tethered to a fence. The dog was bleeding profusely from its mouth and head. Officers immediately called the Sonoma County Animal Control who responded to the scene and transported the mixed breed dog to a local veterinarian for care. It was later learned the dog sustained a possible fractured jaw and head and eye trauma.

Investigating officers determined witnesses heard the assault on the dog and confronted a subject who had been striking the animal with a stick.

At the conclusion of the investigation officers arrested 25 year old Santa Rosa resident Todd L. Naus on the charge of felony cruelty to an animal. Naus was then transported to the Sonoma County Jail.
